t*i«f.at«-h, dated Beverly Ford, on the eye-nine jof tt>« 9th instant, eays: General Ple&saiitun atrtnjlieht crossed the Rappahannock in two icolumns, his right at Beverly1* Ford and his.left at Kelly's Ford, six miles below. The fordsware captured witfiout loss. Beverly'® Fordwas taken hv a spirited dash if the Sth Illinoisand 8ih New York cavalr regiments. We"were on the south side befort- the enemy were jaware of it. Gen. Gregg took Kelly's Ford witha slight skirmish and so loss. The right colamn, under Gen. Buford, had
proceeded only a mile from the river when it.same upon Gen. Jones's whole brigade, whohad just shaken themselves oat of sleep andweie in time to receive us.The firht commenced and continued from 5
a. m. lo 3 p. m., by which time the entire forceof Stuart, consisting, according to papers foundin the camps, of lv,WO cavalry and sixteen
Eieees of artillery, had been engaged and drivenack three miles on the right and Ave miles on
the left, with heavy loss. Our forces succeeded in forminr a junction,
near Brandy Station at i o'clock, when thefighting of both columns under Buford andGreSB very gallantly dune. Not a single instance of misbehavior occur¬
red. The grandest charge was by the 6thPennsylvania cavalry, supported by the 6thregulars, when they dashed on the wholebrigade. ¦
Tt<« enemy were taken in flank by anotherbrigade, and though thoroughly overpowered, gallantly eel their way out- Tworeuiments ofGen. Gregg's brigade, undeT CoL Wyndhamaad Colonel Ktfpatrick, bad hot work all themorning, but drove the enemy from the riverto BrAndy Station. The rebels were numeri¬cally superior to ue, including our small sup¬porting force of infantry. Notwithstandingthis we drove them back hnnUsomely, andcaptured 310 prisoners and one stand of colors. They had five large brigade under commandof Generals Fitzhugh l^ee, W. F. H. Lee, Jones,Field, and Robinson, with sixteen pieces of ar¬tillery, under Maj. Breckham. They had been reviewed the previous day by
Gen. Lee, and were under orders to leave ontheir grand raid into Maryland and Pennsyl¬vania to-morrow, Wednesday, morning. Im¬portant papers have been captured in the campof Jones' brigade, showing the strength of thewhole rebel force, and its intentions. .
The fight was discontinued about 3 o'clock, the rebels falling back upon strong infantrys upports, which came up by rail from Cul-peper, supposed to-be part of Ijongstreet'sforce, which, irom letters taken, we learn wasin that vicinity on Saturday. Our forces returned almost unmolested to
this side of the river during the afternoon, theenemy declining to make any serious attemptto regain their lost ground. The loss of the enemy in killed, wounded and
prisoners far exceeded onr own. Wegottwo«>r three of their brigades under fire of our ar¬tillery with shell of short fuses, and tore themawfullv.ThbClasbeb Under the Cokschiption..
The conscription bill divides citizens liable todraft into two classes. One comprises all able-bodied men between the ages of twenty andthirty-five, married or unmarried; and all un¬married men between the ages of thirty-fiveand forty-five. The second class includes allmarried men between the last named ages. Itturns out, according to the enrollment in NewYork city, that the proportion of the first classto the second is nearly as four to one. There isno reason why the same ratio should not holdgood throughout the country generally. In theextreme her of Western States, the Territories, and Caliiornia, the proportion or the first-classto the second will undoubtedly be larger. Asthe second class is not to be drawn upon untilthe first class is put into service, it appearsthat the Benedicts between thirty-five andforty-five stand but little chance of the draft;in IBct may be considered as practically exemptfrom it unless the war becomes one of extermi¬nation on both sides.
<y Under the head of slip-knots, the New.buryport Herald says a gentleman resides inthat city who is without a wife, though twowomen are living to whom he has been mar¬ried. One ot the women has been married to:wo men, both living, and the other to three, allot whom are still young and active. Onher last marriage she sent to a friend sayingthat shi- had eot an excellent husband, and hewas not the first one of the same kind she hadbeen bie^sed with.
