We published a few day« ago statisticsshowing tbe good effects claimed where Pro-hibition had been in force.

An opposite effect o( the f rohibitionmovement "to that generally looked upon, isgiven in an article Iron) tbe Chicago 11 enfollows:

__ "The national Prohibition movementnow in progress is a menace to thousandsof people and tomillions or monev. Ifcessful it would deprive many peoplimeans of earning a livelihood and it wouldwipe our property and fortunes as renlessly as. war. It is not possible to show bowmany people would be affected in one wayanother by Prohibition, but those who wouldbe directly concerned arc as follows:

Besides the above there are thousandslaborers and others dependent upon them forwork who would necessarily be thrown out ofemployment if the liquor traffic should besuppressed. Probably this class would awclthe number above given to very nearly 2OO,•ooo men, most of -whom have families. Theindustries largely sustained by the liquortraffic, such as coopering, teaming, farmingbuilding and transportation, would elheavy sufferers by- the extinction of the busi-ness. ' Some idea of the property \iattthreatened by the prohibiiion movementbe obtefled from the following: table, show-ing the capital invested and the materialsconsumed in tbe manufacture of the variousdescriptions of liquor.

Capital. Uauriab

HMM^ILIMI •••»•••• 9tiSmaao ,tV

. The first. column gives the approximatevalue of real estate and machinery used intbe manufacture of liquor and which wouldbe valueless for anything eke. Thecolumn may be taken as an average of the«mj»im of money paid yearly by liquor itifg£ture?s to the fanners of the country. Thedestruction of the liquor interest would drii

. thousands of men to agriculture and at tlsame time curtail the demand for the pro-ducts of that industry."

A MEW phase put upon the-Prohibition,movement i* the Tree advertising tbey are se-curing.. This is very clearly brought out bya correspondent of the New York Son, mho•ays;

The Prohibitionisti are managing to gettheir cause extensively discussed without pay.I bought from a New York news stand acopy of each of the mnrning and evening pa-pers. -1 found a6 articles—650 lines—on St.John and Prohibition. TnU gives 43 -line*to > paper. Assuming a circulation of 3.000for eacb paper, and that 45 lines would be afair average for the space given to Prohibitionby each of Uw 1,178 dailies and 9,40* week-lie* of the United SUUs.n hare 8 grandtotal of 34.330,4jo.oooliiMs for ihe campaignwhich would be equal to a dhecuesion ofovet» hundred book pages for every voter of the(7 ni ted States.
