But she had one thing that the other prospective brides didn’t have—Johnny Lingo loved her. What surprised everyone in the village most was Johnny’s offer. It was the custom on the island that any man seeking a wife had to pay her father by giving him cows. Four to six cows were considered a high price. The other villagers thought that Johnny Lingo might, at the most, offer the father of the girl he loved two or three cows. But he gave him eight cows! Everybody chuckled about it, since they believed his future father-in-law had put one over on him. Some thought it was a huge mistake. A year or so after the wedding, a visitor from the United States came to the Islands on business and heard the story of Johnny Lingo and his eight-cow wife. Upon meeting Johnny and his wife, the American visitor was totally surprised. Johnny’s wife was not at all shy, plain, or timid. Rather, she was beautiful, poised, and confident. He wondered how she could possibly be the woman that had been described to him. Johnny Lingo explained it this way: “I wanted an eight cow woman, and when I paid that for her, and treated her in that fashion, she began to believe she was an eight cow woman. She discovered that she was worth more to me than any other woman on the island would have been. You see, what matters most is not what other people think of her, but what she thinks about herself.” What a beautiful story! The lesson it teaches us is that when we value the people around us, something amazing happens. We increase their value and they value themselves more highly. The lesson that Johnny Lingo and his eight cow wife teaches us is especially needed in today’s church. When we respect and love one another, church will be a place of joy because everyone feels valued and worthwhile. On the other hand, when we ignore or criticize one another, problems can develop that can adversely affect not only the church, but also the kingdom of God. When we genuinely value one another the way Johnny Lingo valued his wife, we are being like Jesus. So dear brothers and sisters, let’s strive to have an “eight cow church” by the way we love and value one another. I love you and thank you for the honor it is to be your shepherd and servant. God bless you. HOMEGROWN SERIES

The Evangel In With All My Strength, Norman Wright

shares the intriguing story of a man

named Johnny Lingo who lived on an

island in the South Pacific in the years

following World War II. The islanders all

spoke highly of him. He was strong,

good-looking, intelligent and highly

respected. But when it came time for

Johnny Lingo to find a wife, the people

shook their heads in disbelief.

The woman he chose to marry was plain

looking, skinny, and walked with her

shoulders hunched over and her head

down. She was also very timid and shy.

She also was older than the other

unmarried women in Lingo’s village,

which did nothing for her value as a

prospective mate. But she had one

thing that the other prospective brides

didn’t have—Johnny Lingo loved her.

What surprised everyone in the village

most was Johnny’s offer. It was the

custom on the island that any man

seeking a wife had to pay her father by

giving him cows. Four to six cows were

considered a high price. The other

villagers thought that Johnny Lingo

might, at the most, offer the father of

the girl he loved two or three cows. But

he gave him eight cows! Everybody

chuckled about it, since they believed

his future father-in-law had put one over

on him. Some thought it was a huge

mistake.

A year or so after the wedding, a visitor

from the United States came to the

Islands on business and heard the story

of Johnny Lingo and his eight-cow wife.

Upon meeting Johnny and his wife, the

American visitor was totally surprised.

Johnny’s wife was not at all shy, plain, or

timid. Rather, she was beautiful, poised,

and confident. He wondered how she

could possibly be the woman that had

been described to him.

Johnny Lingo explained it this way: “I

wanted an eight cow woman, and

when I paid that for her, and treated

her in that fashion, she began to believe

she was an eight cow woman. She

discovered that she was worth more to

me than any other woman on the island

would have been. You see, what

matters most is not what other people

think of her, but what she thinks about

herself.”

What a beautiful story! The lesson it

teaches us is that when we value the

people around us, something amazing

happens. We increase their value and

they value themselves more highly.

The lesson that Johnny Lingo and his

eight cow wife teaches us is especially

needed in today’s church. When we

respect and love one another, church

will be a place of joy because everyone

feels valued and worthwhile. On the

other hand, when we ignore or criticize

one another, problems can develop

that can adversely affect not only the

church, but also the kingdom of God.

When we genuinely value one another

the way Johnny Lingo valued his wife,

we are being like Jesus. So dear brothers

and sisters, let’s strive to have an “eight

cow church” by the way we love and

value one another.

I love you and thank you for the honor

it is to be your shepherd and servant.

God bless you.

GROWING YOUR FAITH

Jesus spent time developing His disciples’ faith because He knew it would be essential for the tasks ahead of them. The Lord has the same goal for us—to increase our faith so we can do the work He has planned for us. This series looks at how God grows our faith through difficult situations that stretch us to believe Him instead of depending upon our own understanding. Sermons include: How God Develops Our Faith, How To Make Wise Decisions, Learning To Wait, How To Cope When Life Is Difficult and more. This six-week series begins Sunday morning, September 8.

LIVING THROUGH RELATIONSHIPS

Everyone has those individuals in their life that can be hard to deal with, whether it's a boyfriend, girlfriend, spouse, boss, employee, friend, or relative. In this nine-part sermon series, Dr. Yount takes a look at how to survive relationships God's way. This series will teach you how to live through those difficult relationships in your life. Sermons include: Who Pushes Your Buttons, Six Keys To Relationship Peace, How To Overcome Abusive People, The People-Pleaser Trap and more. Series begins Sunday evening, September 1.

BACK TO THE BASICS (A Study of First John)

Although he was greatly advanced in age when he penned this epistle, John was still actively ministering to churches. He was the sole remaining apostolic survivor who had intimate, eyewitness association with Jesus throughout His earthly ministry, death, resurrection, and ascension. Responding to the crisis of false teaching in his day, the aged apostle wrote to reassure those remaining faithful and to combat this grave threat to the church. John gently, lovingly, but with unquestionable apostolic authority, sent this letter to churches reminding them to return to the basics of the faith. Join us on Wednesdays as Dr. Yount leads us through a verse-by-verse study of this fascinating and heart-warming letter.
