WHAT’S HAPPENING

WHAT’S ON…

Ten years ago, Cooroy Fusion Festival started as a celebration for the opening of the Cooroy Library. It has since morphed into a one-day community festival that delights thousands of locals and is testament to what makes Cooroy special – our community.

The annual Cooroy Fusion Festival is a celebration of local artists, entertainers, artisans, food, community groups and much more. In 2019 it will be held on Saturday May 11, from 9am – 3pm, in Apex Park, Cooroy Library, Butter Factory Arts Centre, CWA Hall and Cooroy Memorial Hall. The event is a literal fusion of community events combining the annual show of the Noosa District Orchid & Foliage Society and the Lifeline Cooroy Denim Sale as well as the Cooroy Bendigo Bank Entertainment Tent, free rides for kids, community group stalls and sensational food and market stalls. Cooroy Library houses classes, presentations and demonstrations all day ranging from tai-chi to a book sale and authors’ signings. The Butter Factory Arts Centre also houses workshops and exhibitions.

The Cooroy Fusion Festival really does have something for everyone so make sure you save the date for a great family day out.

“It’s a festival that includes the entire community with groups that have stalls at the festival, local businesses which sponsor the event, great local entertainment, market and food stalls, dozens of volunteers who assist in running the event and of course the thousands of people who come to experience everything the festival has to offer,” says festival chairperson, Jim Ennis.

Whether obvious or not, music has a way of changing your mood, sparking memories and evoking happiness. And music therapy is fast becoming a mainstream treatment for a range of ailments. Brisbane Music Therapist Karen Richmond has spent the past 15 years using music to help people achieve goals and improve skills. She specialises in early intervention in children but knows just how therapeutic a good music session can be for all ages.

“Music is such a powerful tool,” she says. “It helps with maintaining cognitive skills, speech skills and social skills.” According to Karen, the benefits of listening to and participating in music range from relieving stress, agitation and boredom to reducing loneliness and isolation. “Music is motivating and all-inclusive,” she says. “Playing an instrument activates the entire brain in ways that no other single activity can.”

THE POWER OF MUSIC

Back in mid-July, 2017, three musically gifted Palm Lake Resort residents sat down together for an afternoon catch up. Strumming out “Peace Pipe” by The Shadows, the trio (including Nick Bryant, Steve ‘Shifty’ Taylor and John Haalebos) were somewhat oblivious to the fact that they were, in fact, making history along with music that day in John’s Cooroy-Noosa home. You see, that trio and their song have gone on to grow into the now seven-piece ensemble know around the resort as ‘Trading Post Rock’.

“Over the following weeks, we moved down to the Billiards Room in the Pavilion Country Club to practice,” Nick recalls. “By September 15, Graham Bray joined us as a drummer. After some deliberation, John had decided to leave the band to spend more time with his family. Come November, Graham introduced his friend John Baker into the group, as a new lead guitar.”

Various band members came and went. It was November 29 when Trading Post Rock enjoyed its first band practice with Graham, John, Nick, Steve and Lynda Bryant now as singer. As the band grew, interest in their practise sessions did as well. They moved their rehearsals to the Craft Room, as the Billiards Room

was getting so busy. By October last year, things were starting to really come together for Trading Post Rock. Acoustic guitarist Rod Thomas joined the band bringing their membership to four guitars, a drummer and a lead singer. It soon became clear that they were ready to hit the public music scene. Their first official gig was held at Palm Lake Resort Cooroy-Noosa’s Sports Club on December 8. The band might have played just 13 numbers, but it was the spotlight they needed to cement their desire to ‘go pro’.

“Graham Bray was absent for a few months, so John Wuersching stepped into the drummer’s role,” Nick explains. “We played our second gig at the Sports Club on February 24.”

With Graham back, the ever-versatile John Wuersching has now swung into a second acoustic guitar position, boosting the band’s numbers to seven. “Our repertoire is increasing weekly and we play songs from the 1950s through to 90s, as well as some jazz and a few instrumentals,” Nick says. While Trading Post Rock goes from strength to strength, they are keen to find a keyboard player to join the band and bring yet another dimension to their sound. If you are interested, contact Nick (Villa 92).

THE MUSIC MAKERS

IN THE BAG Right, Palm Lake Resort Cooroy-Noosa’s craft ladies recently met with Cooroy State School Principal Richard Barrie and P&C president Tricia Geelan to hand over a cheque for $1000 along with a number of handmade library bags to be gifted to their students. The craft ladies raised these funds through the sale of enviro bags, which they make themselves in their weekly craft group at the resort. Richard and Tricia said the money would be used to help install much needed air conditioning into rooms at the school. This very productive and talented group of ladies have also made beanies for premature babies at local children’s hospitals and have knitted knee rugs for the elderly in local nursing homes.

Pictured from left to right are Christine Green, Tricia Geelan (Cooroy State School P&C president), Mary Ann Hogan, Deb Ryan, Joan Boreham, Richard Barrie (Cooroy State School principal) and Shirley Daly.

HAPPY HOUR! Left, there was real reason to raise a glass recently with the official opening of the Bowls Club bar. Almost 100 residents came along to the event, spending up big at the new bar. All proceeds from drinks sold go back to the Residents’ Committee for the betterment of our community. We’ll drink to that!

GET WET Above, did you know we have wonderful aqua aerobics classes on at the resort each week? Aqua aerobics is a great form of exercise and gentle on the joints.

OLD SCHOOL Below, Palm Lake Resort Cooroy-Noosa residents enjoyed an hilarious evening at their regular social night in March. There were many games and laughs. One particular game saw a huge photoboard erected featuring old photos of our residents taken when they were teenagers. Groups had to guess who was who in the shots. The Cooroy-Noosa Social Committee meets on the first Friday of every month. If you’d like to join in the committee or have any questions, please contact president Barb Cowan.

Lawn bowls is a sport embraced by the majority of our Palm Lake Resort residents, which is why Palm Lake Group invests so heavily in championship undercover eight-rink lawn bowls greens across all our lifestyle communities. In fact, Palm Lake Resort has recently also signed a deal to sponsor the Women’s Bowls New South Wales (WBNSW) state carnival this month with ongoing financial support of the organisation for the next 12 months. WBNSW chairman of coaching Kathy Chatillon says the game of bowls is more about strategy than it is any physical strength or ability, or the perfect delivery of your bowl.

“It is chess on grass,” Kathy explains. “Like snooker, it’s all about angles. "It’s actually a young person’s game that older people can play as well – it’s not just for oldies! In our Australian Commonwealth Games team last year, the average age of our players was 25. It was in fact a 26-year-old player from

Cabramatta, Aaron Wilson, who won gold in the men’s singles.”

Kathy says the beauty of the game of lawn bowls is that it is more so a social sport. It’s also one of only a handful of games that three generations of a family can play together in the one club.

“We find players are part of a community when they play lawn bowls. It’s a bit like the Surf Life Saving Clubs where a community is built around the local facility,” she says.

“Really, the most important thing about the game of lawn bowls is the social interaction and that players are enjoying each other’s company and having fun. We want you to have a bowl, have a giggle and enjoy a cup of tea or a wine together after the game.”

CHESS ON GRASSLOOKING FOR A NEW SPORT THAT WILL KEEP YOUR MIND AS ACTIVE AS YOUR BODY? LAWN BOWLS MIGHT JUST BE THE GAME FOR YOU.

BOWLS BRINGS OUT THE BEST THE BOWLING CULTURE HERE AT PALM LAKE RESORT COOROY-NOOSA IS A GROWING TREND AND IS JUST ONE OF THE MANY REASONS WHY PEOPLE ARE MAKING THE CHOICE TO MOVE TO THIS BEAUTIFUL LOCATION.

Here at Palm Lake Resort Cooroy-Noosa, we currently have 111 registered lawn bowls players participating in our free social games, held three times a week. One such resident is Jim Walsh. Before moving to Australia 26 years ago, Jim and wife Carol were heavily involved in bowls in New Zealand, where Jim was known as the “Knock-Over Kid”. It might have taken him 15 years of competing in final games before clenching his first grand final win, but that was no deterrent to this man’s passion on the green.

After extensive travel in Australia and living in other over-50s lifestyle resorts, the Walshes were visiting friends at Palm Lake Resort Bargara when they became sold on the Palm Lake Resort offering. Jim recalls it was the Country Club and the bowls facility at Cooroy-Noosa that really swayed them into making the decision to move here - one that they will never regret. While always keen for a roll, nowadays Jim is also treasurer of the Palm Lake Resort Cooroy-Noosa Bowls Committee which keeps him busy on and off the green.

While our eight-rink championship undercover bowls green is definitely world class, and we have many very experienced resident players, don’t be fooled into thinking you need to have a vast bowling background to participate in bowls here. Take resident Vicki Checkley, for example. Vicki had played bowls for the first time 10 years ago when holidaying with friends on Lord Howe Island. Although she hadn’t played since then, when moving into the resort 12 months ago she decided to take it up and now plays twice a week. In October, Vicki took out the Women’s Singles title at the inaugural resort competition. She credits much of her success to the wholesome and supportive community spirit within our resort where residents help one another and share their techniques.

To start in the game of lawn bowls, Kathy says players don’t need special clothes or expensive equipment. And she says the game embraces players of all abilities – and even disabilities.

“You can play from a chair, from a wheelchair, or even by using a bowling arm for assistance – help is available for all types of players,” she says. “Our blind Australian mixed pairs team actually won gold at the Commonwealth Games.”

For those players who want to take their lawn bowls to the next level, however, Kathy suggests players should engage a professional coach and practise, practise, practise.

“But even at the highest competitive levels, it’s still all about playing smart. It’s about out-thinking your opposition.”

A recent report by the Clean Energy Council revealed six of the nation’s Top 10 postcodes for solar installation were located in Queensland. Bundaberg’s 12,620 installations placed them in the top spot and sharing the spotlight were Hervey Bay at Number 3, Caloundra at Number 4 and Toowoomba at Number 5 (locations that are also home to a Palm Lake Resort!). The total number of Australian households with installed solar panels reached two million at the end of last year, and Palm Lake Resort residents are proud to be among those enjoying the benefits of rooftop solar.

You probably already know that, as a renewable energy source, solar power doesn’t deplete natural resources like coal, but did you know that it also saves water, too? Traditional energy uses thousands of litres of water every year – the only water your solar panels need is a bit of rain water that naturally washes them off if they get dirty. Making the switch to solar also reduces the air pollution that would have been created by traditional electricity, and can help reduce your home’s carbon footprint, helping to slow climate change.

Not only do solar panels offer significant environmental benefits, particularly in comparison to electricity generated by fossil fuels, but they also mean serious savings on your power bill. And, with more solar projects popping up all over Australia, solar panels are creating more opportunities and employment for workers.

Here at Palm Lake Resort Cooroy-Noosa, our homes are constructed using the latest technology to ensure superior thermal and environmental efficiency, with the solar orientation of homes also taken into careful consideration. Our Cooroy-Noosa homes come equipped with a 3.0kw solar system and battery. It’s just our way of helping to save the environment while also helping our home owners save at their hip pocket into the future.

The bar is now open and trading has commenced. After a very successful opening night on April 5, we plan to be open for approximately 2-4 hours a day, at least five days a week. Our new bar provides a great opportunity to catch up with fellow residents over a casual drink.

Fundraising within our resort has really taken on a life of its own, with many of our resident groups taking up the challenge. We have Burger Nights at the Sports Club, Social Club raffles on dinner night and our bar sales all go towards various resident activities.

Residents have also taken up the ‘Cash for Containers’ scheme with great vigour.

Not all funds raised go back to our resort community though. Some of the funds go back to our local community such as our Craft ladies who kindly donated monies raised from sales to our local primary school (see article on Page 7) as well as making beanies for a local maternity ward. Our Social Committee has also donated to the local Rotary club to support the Drought Relief Appeal.

Palm Lake Resort Cooroy-Noosa residents value their place in our local community and hope to always support various events and activities within in, simply because this is a beautiful part of the world in which we live.

SUNNY SIDE UP

As our resort grows, so too does the number of those participating in the variety of activities on offer here at Palm Lake Resort Cooroy-Noosa. Ten-pin bowling is one activity that’s drawing a crowd.

Ashley and Wendy Groves participate in ten-pin bowling on a weekly basis. We offer social games (and laughs!) every Wednesday night. It’s a great family activity. New players are always welcome.

“Coming to Palm Lake Resort was the best move we ever made,” the happy couple say. “We have taken up so many new activities since moving here - ones we had always wanted to try but never had the opportunity to, like bowling.”

For the Groves, the beauty of living within a community of likeminded residents is that there is always someone around to talk to and help with learning new skills.

“We are busier than ever, our children have to make an appointment to see us!”
