Over the past few months we have been enjoying a 'Festival of Fun' here at Palm Lake Resort Cooroy-Noosa. With tai chi, twilight bowls, Happy Hours and trivia nights, we have been living it up in the lead up to the BIG ONE – the Residents' Christmas Party – oh, what a night!

So, following all this fun and frivolity, the residents are having a healthy wager and putting $10 upfront in the kitty with the promise not to put on any weight or at least maintain their weight over Christmas. Anyone who doesn’t meet their promise forfeits their money and it is donated to charity. For those who need to get in shape in the new year, we are hosting a Health Forum at the end of January. We will have Milon gym demonstrations, talks by a visiting nutritionist, complimentary tai chi and yoga, pickleball, tenpin bowling and lots more. We will provide a delicious healthy lunch and refreshments throughout the day. Through this great event, and the articles in this edition of "The Essence" newsletter, we are here to help you to fulfil those New Year's resolutions! Please contact the Sales Centre for more info about our January Health Forum.

TURN UP THE HEATTURN UP THE HEATIT’S BEEN A POPULAR FINNISH PASTIME FOR CENTURIES, BUT RECENT STUDIES HAVE REVEALED THAT SPENDING TIME IN A SAUNA DOESN’T JUST FEEL GOOD – IT COULD ALSO BE INCREDIBLY GOOD FOR YOU.

A study published in Mayo Clinic Proceedings has reported that regular sauna bathing can bring about physical benefits similar to those associated with moderate exercise. While this isn’t to say that sauna bathing should completely replace exercise – a combined approach has yielded the best results – there is plenty of evidence to suggest that hitting the sauna a few times a week can offer numerous physical benefits. And here at Palm Lake Resort Cooroy-Noosa, we’ve got you covered!

While there is no active functioning of the skeletal muscles during sauna bathing, the heat and increase in heartrate – typically from baseline up to 120 to 150 BPM – is said to increase muscle blood flow, aiding in better joint health and systemic blood pressure.

Sauna bathing has been found to benefit cardiovascular function, with two reports investigating the effects of regular sauna bathing on the long-term risk of cardiovascular disease. One found an increase in sauna bathing habits to be associated with reduced risk of sudden cardiac death, while the other found that sauna bathing four to seven times a week reduced the risk of stroke by 62 per cent in comparison to sauna bathing just once a week.

These recent findings indicate that high corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) levels – which can typically be improved with regular physical activity – and

frequent sauna sessions can substantially reduce the risk of adverse cardiovascular outcomes.

Sauna bathing has also been linked to an improvement in pain and symptoms associated with osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and other musculoskeletal disorders, and can improve headache disorders.

So, there you have it – frequent visits to your resort sauna could do your physical health a world of good. Keep

in mind, however, that high temperatures in saunas could be potentially harmful for those with symptomatic and unstable disease conditions, or when combined with alcohol consumption. It’s important to consult with your doctor before adding more sauna visits into your weekly routine.

GET HEALTHY GET HEALTHY IN 2020!IN 2020!Proving that our residents’ health and wellbeing comes first, Palm Lake Resort Cooroy-Noosa is hosting a brand new series of January Health Forum events. Residents and visitors alike will learn from a visiting nutritionist as well as enjoy interesting demonstrations in the Milon gym, on the pickleball court and even on the dancefloor (did you know how much of a workout boot scootin’ can be?!). The ever-popular ‘Tai chi with chai tea’ events will also be added to the forum. To find out what events are on when, and get yourself on the invitation list, freecall 1800 885 851.

WE’RE HERE FOR YOU

If your New Year’s resolution is to be more active and get healthier and/or fitter 2020, Palm Lake Resort’s world-class facilities will support your wellbeing this summer. Here’s how:

Bowls and balls: If you’re new to exercise, get in some light activity with lawn bowls and tenpin bowls for starters. For anyone interested in lawn bowls, coaching is held on Tuesdays (9am). Our tenpin bowling group meets on Wednesdays (5pm) and Fridays (3pm) each week.

Milon: Did you know that Palm Lake Resort is Milon’s exclusive partner for over-50s communities in the Southern Hemisphere? This Porsche-inspired electronic gymnasium system offers each resident a personalised Milon membership cards that they simply swipe at each station and the machines automatically reset to that user’s specifications. It takes 17 minutes to complete a round of machines and residents are encouraged to complete three rounds, or workouts, per week. It couldn’t be easier.

Swimming: Swimming is great for gentle exercise that’s low-stress on your joints. Join in our aqua aerobics classes on Tuedays (9am) and Fridays (8.30am) in the indoor pool or head outside and swim some easy regular laps.

Palm Lake Resort Cooroy-Noosa resident Ron Schilds will tell you he is an absolute fanatic when it comes to raquet sports. It started way back when he played representative badminton as a teenager in the UK. While his working life got in the way for a period of time, nowadays, with the time and freedom that retirement offers him, Ron is back playing badminton three days a week, pickleball three days a week, resort tennis on the odd Sunday, as well as competition table tennis among his fellow resident neighbours on Mondays and Wednesdays. Like we say, he’s a fanatic.

“I definitely believe in the importance of getting your heart rate up,” Ron says. “I like to run but it can be boring as hell – so I like to chase things instead!”

Ron is joined in his passion for sport by his wife, Barbara. The pair met playing badminton and have a shared interest in karate. Ron admits though that he let his health slip some years back. Topping out at 148kg and with a “near miss” due to deep vein thrombosis (DVT), Ron knew he had to change his lifestyle. His need to lose weight got him motivated to reignite his passion for sports and, since then, there’s no stopping him! Ron says in any game of badminton, his pedometer can clock up to 12,000 to 15,000 steps in a couple of hours – and he’s currently playing badminton anywhere up to 11 hours a week!

“It’s true – I do like to play hard!” he laughs.

Since moving into Palm Lake Resort Cooroy-Noosa in February 2019, Ron has been leading the charge to bring pickleball to our resort and organised a demonstration day here in December. He explains the game as being akin to tennis, however you can fit four pickleball courts on one standard tennis court so it requires a lot less running around, which can better suit the over-50s demographic.

“Having pickleball here would give our residents more opportunities to play a sport suitable to our age group,” Ron explains.

Ron is also a fan of Palm Lake Resort Cooroy-Noosa’s Milon gym. He says the card system makes using the Milon equipment very easy. He says he especially enjoys the resistance training as it’s great for bones.

“Retirement has been the best thing that ever happened to me,” he admits. “I spent 43 years working as a railway signal operator and I was very stressed at work. I now find great pleasure in life playing all the sport I can.”

Pictured above, Ron's Cooroy-based badminton team which, as this newsletter went to print, won a competition against Nambour. Ron is pictured far right.

GAME, SET, MATCHGAME, SET, MATCHIT HASN’T BEEN IN AUSTRALIA FOR LONG, BUT IT’S ALREADY GOT PALM LAKE RESORT RESIDENTS HOOKED. SO, WHAT ON EARTH IS PICKLEBALL?

If you’ve tried tennis and wished the court was smaller, or badminton and wished the shuttlecock was a ball instead, you’ll be pleased to learn about pickleball.

Invented in Washington in 1965 by a group of friends who were eager to play badminton but unable to find a shuttlecock, pickleball has since grown into a fully-fledged sport. It has a national association here in Australia and a growing number of elite players, as well as international championships.

Popular for its simplicity, pickleball is easy to pick up and even easier to fall in love with. Combining elements of tennis, badminton and table tennis, pickleball can be played with two or four players. A pickleball court has the same dimensions and layout as a badminton court, a net and similar rules to tennis (though with a number of modifications) and paddles similar to those used in table tennis. The ball is plastic, lightweight and perforated.

To play, the ball is served with an underarm stroke, sending it from below waist level in an upward arc. Only the serving side may score a point, which is done when the opposing team commits one of several possible faults. If the serving team commits a fault, no point is awarded. It is then the other side’s turn to serve and potentially score a point. Most of the game is played within two metres of the net, making pickleball an ideal sport for light exercise and socialising.

Brisbane-based, Jen Ramamurthy has held the mixed doubles and women’s doubles Australian national titles. She hosted demonstrations for Palm Lake Resort residents at Caloundra earlier this year.

“It’s a very addictive game!” Jen enthuses. “Of the people I introduce to pickleball, within a few weeks of taking up the sport many of them are playing up to three times

a week – they love it so much!”

Jen says it takes as little as 30 minutes of training for a newbie to the game to confidently take to a pickleball court. It’s easy on the body and the best part of pickleball is that it can be quite the social game – which, as Jen admits, makes it a perfect way for Palm Lake Resort residents to keep active in their retirement and have fun while they’re at it.

CARETAKERS’ REPORTCARETAKERS’ REPORTResidents of Palm Lake Cooroy-Noosa believe in our local community and love to support it any way they can. Fundraising is a big part of the way that residents can demonstrate this. A part of Palm Lake Resort Cooroy-Noosa’s Bushfire Appeal, our residents pooled together the funds to purchase a Waeco Chiller Box and a new water pump for the local Black Mountain Rural Fire Brigade. A presentation was conducted at our Palm Lake Resort as this newsletter went to press (pictured above). Also included in the Bushfire Appeal was a donation to the local Rotary group of funds to purchase essential items for bushfire victims.

Not long ago one of our residents took part in the Australian Cancer Council’s “Shitbox Rally” from Perth to Sydney via Uluru. Over 10 days in a car worth no more than $1000, Ian Bates and his son battled dust, heat and a dodgy motor ve-hicle to eventually arrive in Sydney. Our residents, along with other sponsors, raised several thousand dollars for the Cancer Council’s major fundraiser.

In another example, earlier in the year one of our residents completed the Mud-jimba To Mooloolaba Ocean Swim to raise funds for Nambour Special School.

Our residents are not only willing to support local charities but also will dig deep for others. A devastating event impacted one of our long-time staff members. The residents rallied together and raised a healthy amount for that family’s day to day living. Thank you to all the residents of our resort for their compassionate hearts.

NICKY’S TOP FIVE TIPS FOR GOAL SETTINGNICKY’S TOP FIVE TIPS FOR GOAL SETTING

Keep your eyes peeled for the exciting new Rec-reation Room opening early in 2020. A separate stand-alone facility ad-jacent to the undercover lawn bowls green, it will house table tennis, tai chi, yoga, band practice and exercise classes, among other things. We are also introducing pickleball and installing a croquet green in 2020. And residents will also, no doubt, be enjoying prawns on the barbie this summer in our new under-cover barbecue area.

Having something to look forward to can trigger a surge of dopamine (your reward hormone) and serotonin (the hormone that helps with sleep and relieves pain and bad moods). Many of us use food or alcohol to trigger these hormones but when we feel them in response to setting, projecting and reaching new goals, we feel successful, capable, confident and relaxed.

“When you are goal-oriented, you develop a more resilient emotional version of yourself,” says naturopath, author and speaker Nicky Wise. “But as we move into a slower, less demanding phase of our lives, not having a time-orientated deadline to work to can feel foreign and, for some, downright disorienting.”

The benefits of setting goals in retirement are manifold: it can bring a sense of purpose or connection, prevent regression into despondency, depression and disconnection and keep things interesting and engaging.

“Matching your goals to suit your stage of retirement is important,” Nicky says. “If you are just entering your retirement and still in the working rhythm, you may need to set goals that will keep you busy with moderate time expectations. Alternatively, if you are older, your goals may focus on improving your personal health and wellbeing. Science tells us that our life satisfaction increases when you have a purpose. Setting and achieving your goals will help you find that purpose.”

1. Set SMART goals – ‘Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Timely’.

2. Write your goals down and display them where you can see them.

3. Don’t be discouraged if you don’t achieve your goal on the first try, or your first attempt doesn’t go to plan – you have time to reset and review, which is vital to goal setting success.

4. Set a goal that involves learning something new or attempting something you’ve never tried before.

5. Write a free form list of all the things you’ve always wanted to do, try, visit, experience, see, listen to, know about and explore – not a bucket list, but rather a ‘lazy Susan’ of what you can still do for the fun and pleasure of it. Use this as a master list to draw your specific goals from.

THEY SAY, A GOAL WITHOUT A PLAN IS SIMPLY A LIST. HERE’S WHY IT’S IMPORTANT TO CONTINUE SETTING GOALS, WHATEVER YOUR AGE.

HAVE YOU GOT A GOAL?HAVE YOU GOT A GOAL?
