Awesome April!
Sorors, spring has finally sprung. You have worked
tirelessly over the past 7 months, yet there is still
much work to be done. Illinois Statewide Founders
Day was a memorable weekend as we honored our
founders, rededicated ourselves to the nine Cardinal
Virtues and renewed our allegiance to the
“Delta Oath.” As we reflect on the past
year, let’s be certain as we move forward
that we care for one another and obligate
to work together in a courteous and con-
structive manner, always in the true spirit
of fellowship!
This Spring brings the year of Jabberwock
and we must collectively make this year’s
Scholarship Fundraiser a financial success
for our college bound recipients. If each
Soror solicits one ad, sells raffle tickets, acquires a
sponsorship, and brings a friend or two, we will
reach the goal. You will read more about Jabber-
wock 2016 in the Jabberwock Committee report. We
are asking that each Soror make this commitment for
our biannual scholarship fundraiser.
CAC members continue hosting outstanding pro-
grams informing the community and ourselves. The
Arts and Letters Committee hosted Gallery D’Estee,
Economic Development committee hosted a Net-
working Career Fair, Chaplains Council has us en-
gaged in the CARA program, assisting others in
need as they prepare to rejoin the working force and
Resurrection Day has come and gone.
This month, we look forward to the upcoming Wine
Tour hosted by the Social Committee, Emergency
Response Team (ERT) workshop and the send-off of
43 young ladies and men on CAC’s College Tour.
April is another month of CAC providing service,
and preparing for award submission for the June
Midwest Regional Conference hosted by the Indian-
apolis Alumnae Chapter.
On Saturday morning after the conclusion of the
March 18, chapter meeting, around 3:00 a.m., I sat
down to read my incoming mail. While we were
having chapter meeting, an incoming message came
in from Toni Ward, Chair of the National Conven-
tions/Regional Conferences (NCRC) Site/
Housing Task Force asking CAC to con-
sider bidding to host the 2020 Regional
Conference, with an extension of the
deadline for bidding to Friday, March
25th.
Sorors, please be reminded we will have
an early 5:30 p.m. chapter meeting start
so voting can begin early. We must have
a quorum present to open the meeting.
Please consider coming early Friday for
the April Chapter meeting.
Sorors, let’s spread our love and support, for all of
our programs and each other as we
move toward the last quarter of this fiscal year.
"Service, Empowerment, Leadership and Sister-
hood”
Love you More.…

“Invest in the human soul. Who knows, it might be a diamond in the rough.”
Mary McLeod Bethune
April is the month we invest time and energy for sowing/planting seeds or creating new beginnings.
Sorors, let’s welcome into our lives the month of April!!
What an amazing month we had in March! On the 5th of March, after attentively listening to presentations
on the concepts of a true leader as well as the skills that a good leader should possess, the young ladies of
Delta Academy were challenged to identify leadership qualities that they admired and to dig deep within
themselves to channel leadership skills that they may possess. They were encouraged to design personalized
leadership bags. During the above mentioned leadership presentation, certain phrases, adjectives or words
were used to describe a true leader. Some of those descriptive consisted of: “I am a leader”; “True leaders
don’t create followers…they create leaders”; “Leadership, Success, and Teamwork”. Feeling empowered,
the challenge was on. The young participants began customizing their bags and placed within each, words
which best described the leadership qualities that they possessed. Upon sharing the contents of their per-
sonalized leadership bags, qualities such as confident, honest, dependable, trustworthy, good communica-
tor, good listener were included.

On Saturday, March 12, 2015, the Delta G.E.M.S
of the Chicago Alumna Chapter were invited by the
Evanston – North Shore Alumnae Chapter of Delta
Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. to attend their “My Black
is BEAUTIFUL” girls youth summit. The summit
was an all-day event which included breakfast, inter-
active workshops empowering young ladies, a panel
discussion, lunch, ice breakers and giveaways.
The girls started off the day with an interactive activ-
ity that required them to use their cell phones. Then
they participated in four workshops that talked about
1. Bullying, which touched on the different forms of
bullying and the consequences. The presenter also
touched on the bullying laws in Illinois. 2. Execu-
tive Presence, which talked about your brand and
how you present yourself. 3. A personal discussion
about feminine hygiene and Lastly, Self-Acceptance,
which talked about loving the skin you are in! After
all of the workshops were completed, the G.E.M.S
participated in the panel discussion.
The G.E.M.S stated that they enjoyed the interactive
workshops! They participated in the discussions and
were so uplifted by the presenters that they took pic-
tures with them, asked for their contact information
as well as invited them to their upcoming fashion
show. The entire day was very uplifting and motivat-
ing for Sorors and the G.E.M.S!
On March 20, 2016, the Delta G.E.M.S partnered
with EMBODI and had a workshop titled “It’s a Dif-
ferent World: Dealing with Adversity and Diversi-
ty.” The youth initiatives were broken into groups
and giving poems to read, think about and write
down their thoughts about the poem. They worked
in these groups and discussed their thoughts and
feelings.
DELTA GEMS
On March 19, “WHO AM I?” A Black History program, was held. Dressed to portray the famous charac-
ters, or ‘dressed to impress’ the young participants were charged up. Presenting such famous characters as
--Madame C.J. Walker, Dorothy L. Brown, Patricia Bath, Roger Arliner Young, Barbara Bates, Bessie
Blount Griffin, Miriam E. Benjamin, the audience was in awe to learn such rich history. All of the partici-
pants did a very remarkable job but the three that stood out above all the others were: 1st Place: Noadi-
yah Jones who portrayed Sossina M. Haile – Chemist. 2nd Place: Trinity Carr who portrayed Miriam E.
Benjamin - Inventor (the gong and signal chair for hotels) and was the second Black woman to receive a
patent for an invention. 3rd Place: Miryah Robertson who portrayed Bessie Blount Griffin-physical ther-
apist, inventor, and forensic scientist who also invented/devised an apparatus to help amputees feed them-
selves. We are truly proud of all our participants!
For this current month Sorors, we have some amazing things in store. On April 2, a STEM outing to
SciTech Museum in Aurora, Illinois will be taken. The following day on April 3, some of the Delta Acad-
emy members, Daina Wilson and Gabriella Meschino, to be exact, will be ‘strutting their stuff’ across the
stage of the Delta GEMS fashion show entitled “Fashion in Formation”. Then on April 16, the Dr. Betty
Shabazz Academy will have Career Day at the Delta House.
“We have a powerful potential in our youth, and we must have the courage to change old ideas and prac-
tices so that we may direct their power toward good ends.”

Money Smart Week®
We had a “Poetry café”, where the youth (1 or 2) had
to read the poem out loud and share their discussion
with the rest of the youth and Sorors in the workshop.
After our “Poetry Café”, each group was giving dif-
ferent scenarios dealing with adversity and/or diversi-
ty such as: Marginalized Socialization, Anti – Gay
Hate Crime, Learning/ Physical Disability Marginali-
zation and Conflict Resolution gone wrong. They also
watched a video of Brittany Wilson reciting her poem
“Crutches”.
The youth initiatives were very engaged in this work-
shop. During the scenarios, the youth had a lot of en-
gaging questions and input that lead into a great dis-
cussion. As some of the youth asked questions, it
was good to see them share their views and/or offer
suggestions on ways to avoid and deal with certain
situations with their peers.

tled “Fashion in Formation” is Sunday, April 3,
2016 at 2 p.m. The GEMS will be doing public ser-

Money Smart Week® is a public awareness campaign designed to help consumers better manage their personal
finances. This is achieved through the collaboration and coordinated effort of hundreds of organizations across
the country including businesses, financial institutions, schools, libraries, not-for-profits, government agencies
and the media. These groups come together once a year to stress the importance of financial literacy, inform
consumers about where they can get help and provide free educational seminars and activities throughout the
week. Programming is offered to all demographics and income levels and covers all facets of personal finance
from establishing a budget to first time home buying to estate planning. The effort was created by the Federal
Reserve Bank of Chicago in 2002. Money Smart Week partners will host their events April 23 - 30, 2016.

TECHNOLOGY
The Technology Committee continues to align CAC
with the National Technology Strategic Plan, to en-
sure the chapter utilizes the latest technology and
applies it to improve chapter operations.
Ensuring you have a DIG compliant email address,
minimizes potential delays you may experience
when Technology audits email accounts and yours is
not Delta Internet Guideline (DIG) compliant. A
DIG-compliant email address means it should be a
personal email address that’s not employer or organ-
ization provided (i.e. org, edu, mil, etc). The fi-
nance team sends notifications to those sorors who
have non-compliant addresses. Technology will not
add you to the email distribution list until you have a
complaint address, if you’re a new member or re-
cently paid dues. Once you have retained a personal
email account and have updated your profile to re-
flect the new address on National’s Sister’s Only
Member Portal, please notify the Technology Com-
mittee ([email protected]).
To read more about DIG visit National’s website
(www.DeltaSigmaTheta.org) and highlight Policies
from the red banner. Click on Website Guidelines
from the drop-down menu.
Add the [email protected] and So-
[email protected] to your contact’s list to
avoid having communications from Chicago Alum-
nae being sent to SPAM or junk folders.
CAC Financial Members can register for the Mem-
bers Only Portal at the Chapter website
(www.chicagodeltas.com) by following the steps:
Scroll down to the bottom of the homepage and click
on the Fortitude image.
Step 1: Create a user name and password following
the prompts.
Step 2: Acknowledge the registration immediately
(by clicking on a unique link that is sent to your
