A Message from the ESC Director The Ecosystem Science Center (ESC) has now completed its eighth successful year. ESC members have been incredibly productive in terms of attracting extramural funds for research and student training, mentoring graduate and undergraduate researchers, and publishing in high impact journals, as described in the Summary of Activities on the following page and the details provided throughout this report. Highlights from the last years include research expenditures that rank near the top of Michigan Tech’s centers and institutes, continued support for the Distinguished Ecologist Lecture Series, the largest ESC/BRC Student Research Forum yet, a complete reworking of our web page, and, of course, many successful new awards, such as NSF funding of research at the PEATcosm facility, NASA funding of fuel consumption and carbon cycling in northern peatlands, and DOE funding of the effects of climate change and decomposer communities on wood decomposition. ESC members also have put tremendous effort into student training, outreach activities, and University and national service, including hosting the ecological systems module of the National Advanced Silviculture Program, presenting several Teacher Institutes and sending twenty of our graduate students to national and international scientific meetings. The success of the ESC during the past eight years is a direct result of the hard work of our members, and I look forward to continued interaction with this outstanding group of ecologists during the coming year.

I hope you enjoy the report. Michigan Tech is a great place to conduct research, education and outreach in ecosystem science, and the ESC looks forward to creating new opportunities for all of these in the coming year. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions about the report or the Center.

Mission Statement & Summary of Activities for FY2012

Mission Statement: "To promote understanding of ecosystem function through education and research at Michigan Technological University."

The Ecosystem Science Center (ESC) is designed to advance our understanding of how ecosystems function and how human activities influence ecosystem processes. The Center's two main objectives are to: (1) foster ecosystem research and (2) educate graduate and undergraduate students in the area of ecosystem science. These two objectives will be met through collaboration among faculty, staff and students interested in ecosystem science.

Summary of Activities: During the past year, the Ecosystem Science Center (ESC) accepted three new members, increasing the total membership to 48. The ESC remained very active in research, ranking first among the eighteen Centers and Institutes at Michigan Tech in terms of number of research awards (98) and number of projects (166). The ESC also ranked third overall in research expenditures ($5,992,989) and third overall in new research funds awarded ($3,938,609). ESC funds have supported the development of interdisciplinary research proposals involving multiple units across campus and collaborations with government and university partners both nationally and internationally. Details of our ongoing research can be found in the ESC web page, which has been revised by Jill Fisher, Trish Burton and Carrie Richards to highlight the wide range of research projects conducted by our members (http://www.mtu.edu/forest/esc/). The ESC also supports research through purchases of equipment, including the purchase and pending installation of a liquid water isotope analyzer for the assessment of 18O and 2H in water and water vapor samples. The instrument is being purchased using Michigan Tech Research Excellence Funds awarded to the ESC, in conjunction with ESC and member funds. The availability of the analyzer will aid existing research projects and allow ESC members to propose new avenues of research, such as investigating sources of soil water available to and used by species known to differ in drought tolerance. All ESC equipment is available to ESC members and to the entire campus community through analytical use charges.

Research awards to ESC members are supporting numerous graduate students, including three PhD students and five MS students who completed their degrees during the past year. The ESC has directly enhanced graduate and undergraduate education and training by awarding: 1) $21,187 in ESC research grants to 25 students to either expand their existing research project or allow for new additional research; 2) $10,000 in travel grants for 20 students to present research results at national and international scientific meetings; and 3) $2,512 in training grants to allow two graduate students to receive training in cutting edge research methods and techniques that are not yet available at Michigan Tech. In addition, the ESC has supported the Distinguished Ecologist Lecture Series and the largest ever ESC/BRC Research Forum, which give our graduate and undergraduate students opportunities to discuss their research with both peers and internationally renowned experts. The combined efforts of our members and their students have resulted in 147 peer-reviewed publications in print or in press in from January 2011 through October 2012.

Through the use of a unique cable system and arborist-style climbing techniques, graduate student Adam Coble sampled leaves from 0 to 23 meters in height in a closed-canopy sugar maple (Acer saccharum) forest in the Upper Peninsula, MI. Adam will use this data to determine the influence of height and light on leaf morphology and can then compare the influences of height and % light transmittance on leaf mass per area (LMA) and two components of LMA, leaf density and thickness. Adam’s advisor is Molly Cavaleri in SFRES.

ESC Faculty International Exchange The newest member of the Ecosystem Science Center, Dr. Erika Hersch-Green applied for and was granted an award to foster research and educational collaborations with Dr. Jeff Harvey, a senior research scientist from the Nederlands Instituut voor Ecologie (NIOO). They will travel to each other’s respective institutions to finalize the framework for collaborative project(s) with the ultimate goal of Dr. Hersch-Green submitting one to two federally funded grant proposals (USDA and/or NSF) to seek funding for students to conduct research internationally. Drs. Hersch-Green and Harvey will also present research talks at each other’s respective institutions on independent research and the collaborative efforts, in hopes of fostering additional interactions with faculty, students and interested researchers. Worldwide, exotic invasions and climate changes are two major causes of extinction and loss of biodiversity. The initial planned research project will use replicated common gardens of distinct genotypes of Evening primrose species (Oenothera), which are native to the Americas but highly invasive in Europe, to test various hypotheses about the ecological and evolutionary implications of invasions and the interaction between invasive species and climate change. Proposals will explore the overarching hypothesis that invasions and climate change are associated with 1) shifts in community properties (i.e., above and below-ground natural enemies and mutualists, multitrophic interactions, and plant competitor diversity, density, and dynamics) and that this has 2) altered genetic properties (in structural and regulatory properties of genes) of invasive plants resulting in shifts in ecoevolutionary dynamics and feedbacks.

REF Infrastructure Enhancement Grants In the spring of 2011, the ESC successfully obtained REF Infrastructure Enhancement funds towards the purchase of a liquid water isotope analyzer (LWIA). The REF-IE grant contributed $18,000 towards the purchase, with additional funds coming from the Ecosystem Science Center ($20,000), the Dean of SFRES ($5,000) and individual ESC members ($3,000). The instrument is scheduled to be delivered in February, 2013. Water isotopes are used in diverse applications including: climate studies, wetland hydrology, paleoclimate reconstructions, plant water tracers, aquifer dynamics, bird migration mapping, analytical hydrology tests, and metabolic activity monitoring. Instruments operated by the ESC have previously provided the Michigan Tech community with access to analyzing isotopes and the ability to extract water from soils, plants and other medium using a cryogenic distillation line (one of the few cryogenic distillation lines in the country was built with previous REF-IE funding to ESC 2007). However, the mass spectrometer that has been used for the last decade and a half to analyze our water isotopes is limited to only measuring δ18O and does not measure δ2H, which can limit the interpretation of results. The new instrument has will have a next-generation near-infrared laser to quickly and easily quantify both δ18O and δ2H in water and water vapor. The instrument will greatly increase the number of samples that can be run, be significantly cheaper than our current systems, and allow for both δ18O and δ2H to be analyzed simultaneously. The equipment will be used extensively for graduate research and its use will be incorporated into graduate courses.

The LWIA will join existing ESC equipment that is available not only to ESC members but to the entire campus community through analytical use charges. In 2012 equipment from recent REF-IE supported purchases was widely used. For example, our ICP-OES analyzed 4,420 elements for 11 faculty members from four units on campus (SFRES, Biological Sciences, Chem Eng, Materials Sci and Eng) and collaborators from the US Forest Service; and our TOC/TON analyzer was used to analyze 2,166 samples for 8 faculty members from three units on campus (SFRES, Biological Sciences, CEE) and collaborators from the US Forest Service. Other ESC instruments, long-available through use charges, also were extensively used in 2012 (3,384 solid samples for C and N analyses using our elemental analyzer and 1,412 solid and gas samples for stable isotopes of C and N using our Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometer). We anticipate analyzing even more samples in 2013, based on the requirements of several recently funded projects and discussions researchers from other entities on campus have had with our laboratory manager, Jennifer Eikenberry. During the next five years, we wish to make the availability of our equipment more widely known across campus and be recognized as a core facility, and include additional instruments among those available for use (several GCs, including one for PLFA analyses and a rapid flow analyzer for NO3

-, NH4+, and PO4

3-). We also will actively pursue external funds to replace our aging IRMS and increase its capabilities.

Global Change Teacher Institute, June 18-22, 2012 Once again, many ESC members collaborated with the Western U.P. Center for Science, Mathematics & Environmental Education to host the Global Climate Teacher institute In June of 2012. Twelve middle and high school teachers participated in the intensive five-day institute to study real-world current effects of global change factors.

Since 2005, the GCTI has introduced 117 middle and high school teachers to the latest science regarding the effects of global change on ecosystems. Participants are largely from the Great Lakes region, but teachers from locations such as California, New York, Mexico, and Maryland have also attended. The teachers receive an introduction to the most recent global change science and take part in hands-on activities examining the physical, chemical, and biological sciences of global change and its effects on forest, wetland, and stream ecosystems. National Content Standards for mathematics; life, earth and physical sciences; technology, and social studies are addressed in the GCTI and participants receive credit toward a Master’s degree or recertification. The teachers then apply the knowledge gained in teaching units they develop to fulfill GCTI requirements, allowing us to reach a broad K-12 audience with the latest global change science. ESC members also are active participants in the Forest Ecology & Resources Teacher Institute and the Urban Forest Stewardship Teacher Institute on Belle Isle in Detroit.

2012 Instructors: The Institute was taught by ESC members Dr. Andrew Burton, Kristen Schmitt from Michigan Tech’s Northern Institute of Applied Carbon Science, and graduate students Mickey Jarvey and Carley Kratz, with institute coordination provided by Joan Chadde K-12 Education & Outreach Program Coordinator, Western U.P Center for Science, Mathematics & Environmental Education.
