The Eaton Share Friday 15 January, 2016 Spring Term
From the Headmaster…….
I spoke to the pupils at various times last week about
2016 and the exciting year that it is bound to be for
them all. We reflected for a time on 2015 and what
they had done well, before looking ahead to how
they could perhaps make the next twelve months
better and more successful, both for themselves and
for others. I am sure that they will work hard to do
so.
During the break the maintenance and repair teams
have also worked hard and the first Phase of the Pre
Prep works was completed on schedule. The new
flooring on the Ground floor and Basement went well
and the communal areas are now lighter and appear
more spacious too. We must wait now until the next
break before we can start on the redecoration
for Phase 2.
On Friday we were handed the keys to the new
Sussex Street Playground. It is an excellent
space and very secure; the children have been
enjoying their time there enormously. We are
there every day and it is a fabulous find. My
thanks to Mrs Hayes for all of her efforts in
securing the premises.
As you all know we have had an incredibly mild
winter so far. The colder air appears to be
moving in this week and the temperature has
definitely dropped. Whilst in school the pupils
are perfectly warm but please do make sure
that for lunch times, and their journeys to and
from school, that they are suitably attired.
The first Inter School Swimming Gala was held
last night against Francis Holland and I am
happy to say that it began 2016 in just the right
way. The record continues.

Year 2 Maths - We have been looking at our partitioning
once again this term and consolidating our
learning. We split 2-digit numbers using our
Hundred, Tens and Units place value
understanding. We have also been working on
adding 10, 11 and 9 using our place value
understanding also.
English - In English this week Year 2 have been
doing lots of work using the alphabet and
ordering words. They were taught how to use a
dictionary to help with their spelling and also to
find the meaning of words. They were also
introduced to their new topic; ‘Instructions’. They
all had a go at following a set of spoken
instructions to make chocolate truffles. If they
followed the instructions carefully, their truffles
turned out beautifully! It was a rather messy
lesson, but lots of fun!
Humanities - We have started our exciting topic
this term of Ancient Egypt. We have already
been hard at work researching in our topic
reading area for facts about Ancient Egypt and
its many Gods and Goddesses. We have also
located Egypt on a map and started to look at
key areas with Ancient Egypt to help with our
understanding of what life was like then.
Computing - We are becoming researchers in
computing to find facts all about Ancient Egypt.
As a class we created a shared mind map on
‘Freemind’. We are starting to add new skills to
our computing
and will soon be
exploring the
program
PowerPoint to
make
presentations.
Certificates awarded in Year 2 this week:
2P – Sammy Shawkat -for his excellent effort to use
joined handwriting.
2L - Arina Mangla for setting a good example to
others in all areas of school life.
2K - Ramy Umari-Cartier-Bresson - for settling in so
well to life in 2K. Well done!
Dawoud and Arin (2P) brought in an art project they
have been working on together out of school to
show to the class. It was an imaginary city full of
amazing features, such as a time machine, a giant
cloud, an ancient hospital, an airport and a prison!
Year 3 English - In English lessons this week, Year Three
have researched Greek Gods and Goddesses. The
teachers were so impressed with their detailed
research. They then used this information to
design and write top trump cards, rating the Gods
on their bravery, beauty, kindness and
intelligence. We then moved on to designing our
own Gods. We have also looked at how to use
commas accurately.
Maths -Year Three have been developing their
understanding of fractions this week. They have
looked at how to find a fraction of a shape as well
as a fraction of a number. We have also started to
look at recognising equivalent fractions. If you eat
any chocolate or sweets over the weekend, why
not show off your excellent fractions knowledge
by sharing a half or quarter with a friend!
Games -Year Three have had a very active week!
The boys have had lots of fun in their first couple
of Rugby lessons and they have focused on
revising the rules of the game as well as
developing their skills. The girls have started their
new sport, Hockey. They’ve loved using their shin
pads and mouth guards for the first time and have
had really started to improve their skills using the
hockey stick.
All of the children have loved seeing their friends
again and have had lots of fun playing at park.
Certificates awarded in Year 3 this week:
Thea Mesomeris for an excellent, informative poster on Aphrodite.
Cameron Caveney for becoming increasingly organised and independent.

learning about fractions. They have focused on
finding fractions of amounts using word problems
and finding equivalent fractions. We have also
been exploring the key vocabulary associated with
this topic.
English - In year 4 , the children have been
learning the key features of persuasive texts
including comparative and superlative adjectives.
PRE- 4C and 4Gr have been writing New Year resolutions and thinking of ways in which we can stick to them. Science - Year 4 have been learning about the
states of matter: solid, liquid and gases. They have
been learning about the different properties and
how each state’s particles act. They have also
carried out experiments linked to a liquid’s
volume and shape.
Geography - The Year 4 classes have started to
explore their new topic, ‘India’. The children have
been learning about the physical and cultural
similarities and differences between the UK and
India. In 4Gr, we have also produced a collage of
images that the children feel represent Indian
culture.

4G have been investigating gases and weight
Year 5 Maths - We are converting fractions, decimal
numbers and percentages. This involves ensuring
children know the equivalents for amounts such
as ¼, ½ and ¾ off by heart. They will also be
shown how to work out the conversions for
amounts they do not know. We will move on to
dividing and multiplying decimal numbers next
week.
English - We are beginning work on our new class
text, Street Child by Berlie Doherty. The children
have begun by predicting what they think will
happen in the story. They have looked at adverts
and created their own Victorian advert for a
shilling pie, as mentioned in the story. They will
move on to using sensory description to describe
a Victorian slum and the house where Jim Jarvis,
the main character, lived. The children will also be
reading further into the book and looking at life in
a Victorian workhouse.
Geography - The children have begun their new
topic, Mountainous Environments. They have
used atlases to identify the locations of various
mountain ranges in the UK and
across the world. The children have
researched various mountain
ranges and created fact files about
them. They have also learnt how
different types of mountains are
formed. Next week, we will begin
to look at the climate in
mountainous environments as well
as tourism and the effect it can
have.
Computing - Year Five have started
to learn about blogging. They have discussed what
a blog is, what can be included in it, such as
pictures and videos, and the purposes of a blog.
Congratulations to our Year Five stars of the week:

and growing up. They completed an ‘A to Z of
puberty’ and had interesting and informative class
discussions from the outcome.
PRE - Year 6 have been talking about inspirational
people in the world today and thinking about
what the qualities of an inspirational person are.
In addition to famous inspirational people, many
of the children identified friends, family members
and teachers as people who inspire them to be
kind, hardworking and successful.
French - Year 6 have been describing themselves
and their family and learning different adjectives
in the feminine and masculine forms, such as
travailleur/se (hard-working) and bavard(e)
(chatty).
Computing - Year Six have been learning about
GPS this week; what it means and how it works.
They have also looked at ‘pulled apart’ digital
devices to see the components inside.
Geography - Last week we went over the basics
on a world map: continents, oceans and lines of
latitude and longitude. This week we are starting
to read and locate place in an atlas using the
degrees and N/S/E/W.
Years 7 & 8 English - Year Eight have started to study
literature of WWI. We explored the theme of
Remembrance and then explored how WWI
literature serves to memorialise the war
experience. Year Eight have started analysing
canonical poem and drew particular inspiration
from Sassoon’s Attack this week, in order to
compose their own poems on fighting on the
WWI battlefield.
Year Seven have started to study the plot of
Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice. We spent
some time trying to solve Portia’s casket riddle
and we spent some time performing the plot
succinctly, in the style of The Reduced
Shakespeare Company.
Maths - Year Eight pupils have been working on
simultaneous equations. They have been using
the elimination, scale factor and the re-
arrangement and substitution methods to solve
these equations. Having mastered this, they’ve
now moved onto how to apply these methods to
solving problems.
Year Seven pupils have completed their work on
fractions, some having done Y8/9 work. They have
now moved onto algebra. This week we are
re-capping on the rules of algebra, such as 7 x b is
written as 7b or b7, simplifying expressions and
multiples and powers of X.

tectonic plates and volcanoes this week. Year
Eight are continuing their work on economic
activities and transport. Both classes received a
letter this week about their trip to the Natural
History Museum on 4th February.
Computing - Year Seven have started making their
own Pacman game on Scratch.
A big well done to Guillermo Bedward in 7J for his
performance in ‘Medea’ at the Almeida theatre. He
was in this professional show which ran from
September until November last term and still
managed to come to school and stay on top of his
work!
Guillermo is currently down to the final 3 to be cast
as ‘Charlie’ in the West End Show ‘Charlie and the
Chocolate Factory’, and is also through to the final
auditions for a role in a new Netflix series. We wish
him the best of luck.
