BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA, TROOP 1 SEPTEMBER 2011 When I write for the Eagle’s Nest it really helps when I am in an environment that makes me feel the essence of what boys scouts is all about! As I write this I am laying in my tent on a very cool Saturday morning listing to the sounds of the nearby Nantahala river and anticipating the noises soon to come of boy scouts as they come to life to prepare for a day that will include navigating the many rapids of the Nantahala River and thevmany other games that boys just seem to come up with. Our natural environment is such a wonderful classroom for those boys as they become “prepared for life” through their membership in Troop 1. This weekend has been one of the nicest I can remember with beautiful weather and the neatest full moon looking down on us as we have faded off to sleep each night. We are now back in the groove with a great fall program during our weekly meetings and also with many more fun weekends on the horizon. Things are really good in the Troop 1 world!! Our troop had a very successful week at Camp Ho Non Wah back in June for which you will find more details in this issue. Our August trip to Lake Summit was loads of fun on the water and of course, here at Nantahala we are in for a treat on the rapids. Water sure does seem to mix well with Troop 1! With two campouts now completed, we have three more planned for this fall that includes mountain biking, hiking, and railroading. I hope everyone is ready for more adventure. This fall our scouts are busy earning the God and Church award for our middle school age scouts and the God and Life award for our high school age scouts. This is a program designed to give our scouts a chance to discover more about their own faith and also learn about the faith’s of other people from a scouting perspective. They will be completing the requirements over the next several months before receiving their awards on Scout Sunday in February. I am very proud that so many of our boys have chosen to pursue this award. Many thanks to Chris Lynn, Iman Green, and Hal Carter as they guide our boys on this project. It is great to see the excitement of our newest crop of scouts. They bring with them an eagerness to learn the ways of their new troop as they begin on their trail to becoming an Eagle Scout. We are very happy to have you with us! I think I am now hearing the sounds of some young scouts as they build a fire to warm up on this very cool mountain morning. The smell of bacon is sure to come soon followed by much laughter as we prepare for this day of fun…….oh the simple things in life make Troop 1 such a special part of our lives. The Eagles Nest

BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA, TROOP 1 SEPTEMBER 2011

When I write for the Eagle’s Nest

it really helps when I am in an environment that makes me feel the essence of what boys scouts is all about!

As I write this I am laying in my tent on a very cool Saturday morning listing to the sounds of the nearby Nantahala river and anticipating the noises

soon to come of boy scouts as they come to life to prepare for a day that will include navigating the many rapids of the Nantahala River and thevmany

other games that boys just seem to come up with. Our natural environment is such a wonderful classroom for those boys as they become “prepared for life”

through their membership in Troop 1. Our troop had a very successful week at Camp Ho Non Wah

A great day for everyone, but the chickens!

The Annual Troop 1 "Fowl Fest" will take place Saturday, November 19. As always, this is our one and only fundraiser. Every scout and a parent will be required to be an active participant so please mark your calendar accordingly.

Scouts will be issued an initial allotment of 25 tickets on October 25. Also, three scouts can sell at The Advent between services October 30, November 6 and 13. Russ Rudolph will be coordinating ticket sales this year.

Scouts can earn money towards their High Adventure Account (H.A.A.) once again! Funds earned can go towards trips such as snow skiing, summer camp or Philmont! For every ticket sold up to 25, the scout will receive $3 per ticket. Over 25 tickets sold, the scout will warn $4 per ticket to their H.A.A. Finally, scouts can earn a 10% commission on any sponsorship sold!

Look for more details in the coming weeks but start thinking about who you want to sell tickets and sponsorships to this year. As in the past, there will be weekly prizes for top sellers and overall prizes that are very lucrative!

Troop 1 had one of the most successful times ever at summer camp

last June at Camp Ho Non Wah

on Wadmalaw

Island near Charleston. Following an Interfaith Worship Service in front of the scout hut led by Rev.

Ned Morris the scouts processed the flags in the 9:00 Advent service and led the congregation in the Pledge of Allegiance in honor of the upcoming Flag Day. Then it was on the bus and off to six days of much learning and personal development.

Lead by Kyle Boyles, Ted Gage, Chip Hill, Jacky Middlebrooks, and SPL Logan McCain, a record 43 boys made the trip down to camp. We leaders

had a great time getting to know the boys, especially the first year scouts,

a little better throughout the week. We saw many of them "grow up" from being homesick, figuring out new relationships, becoming leaders, and achieving through determination! At times they were hot, not feeling well, not liking the delicious sulphur

water... but we only heard a few complain. We got to see older scouts helping younger scouts learn knots, oaths, skills, lashings, sweeping, ultimate Frisbee, basketball, Indian Lore and what it is to be a Troop 1 Scout. Five years ago we talked with our first year scouts and encouraged them to look to the older scouts as mentors and leaders, and to remember that when they became older scouts and leaders. It appears that most have taken that lesson to heart and we took over 75% of our scouts to summer camp this year. We

brought home memories to last a lifetime (and a huge box of awards, including our traditional Friday night Troop 1 scout awards where every scout gets an award with a story behind it)!

Now is the time to put June 10 -

16, 2012 on your calendar and encourage your son to once again attend summer camp (they voted to return to Ho

Non Wah). For our younger scouts, it is important for their trail to Eagle, and for our older scouts that no longer need Eagle merit badges, come and take 2 or 3 merit badges, but more importantly, come and show your leadership by mentoring younger scouts. All of us look forward to Troop 1 once again having to figure out how to get so many scouts to camp (and through Rush's) and another hot week of Livin' on Wadmalaw

Island time in 2012!

If you haven't already heard, here are some of the official awards taken home by Troop 1:Spirit Award: No, Troop 1 still doesn't sing, but smiling faces, and camp t-shirts sealed the award!Nine Flags: Troop 1 was the only troop to take a flag from staff... not just

1, but 3 of the 9!Archery:

Logan McCain took the individual Archery awardLeaders Shoot:

Kyle hit 10 for 10 to edge out the leader from Florida and Troop 2Ultimate Frisbee: Undefeated in play against other Troops and still working on beating the staffBasketball:

For the first time Troop 1 took home the plaque as Basketball ChampsWoodsmen:

20 Troop 1 Scouts completed WoodsmenDuty to God: 19 Troop 1 Scouts completed the week long patchChaplain Training: Sam Spencer became (maybe the first for Troop 1) trained as a Chaplain AidOrder of the Arrow: Congrats to Charles Mercer for being Tapped OutStaff Awards:

Troop 1 gave out 20 awards to staff in the form of t-shirts…..as we left the island, many staff members were walking around Saturday

morning with Troop 1 shirts! And the one that has eluded Troop 1 for so many years.......The coveted Paddle!

Troop 1 not only won the paddle once, but THREE times during the week and was the troop with the highest cumulative score for the week and won the right to bring it home! Perhaps we should build

a lighted glass display case for this jewel!!

You could never put in words the emotions we felt Friday night during the closing campfire and then at the Troop 1 awards ceremony held afterwards. It was truly a magical week for our troop.....not to say we did not

have issues, but we worked to resolved those and become stronger as a result. It reaffirmed what we already knew in that Troop 1 is an organization of so many talents. Sometimes we get caught up in it all being about being an Eagle Scout that we forget what is the main mission of our troop.......making lifelong friendships and experiencing personal growth through our time together.

We had a great start to our 2011-2012 Outdoor Season with our trip to Lake Summit. A special thanks goes out to all those who participated and made this a very memorable experience for our scouts. Mr. Gage

does a super job opening his home to us, and I am told that Lake Summit actually gets more fun each year.

Our next trip was white water rafting down the Nantahala. In addition to a great rafting trip, we stayed at the Appletree Family

Campground which is really a great campground with nearby stream, that is always a big hit for scouts of all ages.

On September 30-October 1, we will head to Bent Creek to take in some mountain biking. This trip has always proved to be fun in the past so

we decided to add it back into the outdoor trip rotation. All scouts should probably start getting into shape they can make the most out of

this experience.

Next up is fall backpacking on October 21-23. We would really like for scouts of all ages to attend this one. Mr. Wakefield has

volunteered his expertise to make this a quite different trip than in years past. You don't want to miss it.

The Outdoor portion of Troop 1 is intended to allow scouts to practice what they learn in the classroom. In addition, scouts learn the value

of self reliance and being prepared, but, most importantly, this is the time scouts get to enjoy spending time with their fellow scouts.

To conclude, we want scouts to have a good experience on their path to eagle, so feel free to contact me anytime with suggestions. The

weather will soon be getting cooler so, Scouts, “prepare to get those campfires lit”.

A Board of Review is the final step in the process by which a Scout

advances in rank -

eventually to Eagle. It also encourages Scouts to

review "the basics" and gives troop leaders valuable feedback. Boards

of Review are conducted by two or three Scout leaders. You must first

arrange a Scoutmaster's Conference and review the requirements for

your rank with him.

Once you have completed your Scoutmaster's

Conference you may schedule a Board of Review. There are two

ways to schedule a Board of Review (BOR): email Harriet Ike at

[email protected]

or call Harriet Ike at 864-542-8338 (home) or

864-542-4059 (cell). Note that doing it the day that Scouts takes place

for a BOR that night is not advisable. Please try to schedule your

BOR several days ahead. Board of Reviews will be scheduled as soon

as possible and you will be emailed or called back. Make sure if

Calling to leave a return phone number. Assissting

Hariet

Ike

this year will be Mr. Bubba Littlejohn and Mr. Chip Hill. We

look forward to working with each and every one of you and

know we will have a great year.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to give

me a call or email me.
