President’s Letter Dear Erasmus Alumni, I am elated once again to address you as your president. I would be remiss if not to acknowledge the Erasmus Alumni Board Members who keep this engine going and have kept me moving forward. For their countless efforts and fortitude, I thank them. Many of them have jobs, families and responsibilities but they have made enormous sacrifices to continue giving their support and time to uplift the children and name of Erasmus Hall High School. I thank you, the alumni association members, for your donations and scholarships, for if it were not for you this association would not function. Not a lot has changed. There are still five schools, five principals, five graduations and five proms. That was the trend of the last school administration to separate into the small school concept but the only common thread has been through sports where all of the five schools unite as one Erasmus wholly displaying the name as they triumph in their sports endeavors. That cannot and will not stop us, the mighty, mighty Dutchmen There were many promises made about the restoration of our beloved Academy Building. As of today, no construction or changes have been made to that decaying structure despite all of the promises and disappointments. We will not stop in our quest to restore our Academy Building. Please send letters and emails to City Council, Mayor, Borough President and New York City elected officials about the neglect of The Academy Building I have some good news and bad news about this year’s Homecoming. The good news is that the Snowflake Youth Foundation and the Tisch family have donated $300,000.00 toward remodeling all of the gyms at Erasmus. They are redoing the floors, lightening, and electrical work. Due to the extensive construction being done throughout the building, we will not be able to have the Homecoming at the school. Your alumni association has purchased a brand new state of the art score board which will be installed during this project. For next year’s Homecoming we will have a score board dedication ceremony and we hope to see everyone there. Stay healthy, safe and keep the name of Erasmus Hall High School in your hearts. Evelyn Dorfman graduated in 1936, during the Great Depression era. Evelyn recalls that the students were always being reminded that the school had to save money. Although after school funding support was tight, the school held and she participated in the Service Club, C.O.A and the footlighters, a theatre club. She was also a great swimmer. Evelyn, now Evelyn Malina, has remained friends with Doris Markos Cylkowski for over eight decades. Doris was also a member of C.O.A. The class of 1936 did not have a prom. However, the students were invited to the gymnasium for fruit punch, cookies and dancing to a victrola and records. Evelyn says, "This was our version of a D.J."

Ms. Dorfman Malina recalls that Jeff Chandler and Sid Luckman attended Erasmus during her era. Jeff Chandler was a movie star who gained popularity during the 1950s. Born Ira Gossel, Jeff Chandler was best remembered for playing Cochise in the film Broken Arrow. He won an Oscar nomination for this role. Among his films were Bird of Paradise, Flame of Araby and Two Flags West.

Sid Luckman was a Football quarterback for the Chicago Bears from 1939 through 1950. During his 12 seasons with the Bears, he led them to four NFL Championships. Erasmus Hall's Field is named after this football legend.

Paul S. Forbes,1946 graduate, served as art editor of the Dutchman, while attending Erasmus Hall High School. After graduation, Paul enlisted in the Army and served in Linz, Austria. After his discharge, he attended college under the GI Bill and studied management. Paul was hired as a management trainee by the ancestor of the Marriott Corporation. He later worked for a large chain of retail food stores for 25 years as Executive Assistant to the President and Director of Communications and Public Affairs. During this time he used his corporate position to advance both civil rights and consumer protection. He later went on to become Vice President of Communications and Public Affairs for a large chain of drug stores. Paul helped turn the company around from near bankruptcy and developed one of the earliest drug awareness programs in cooperation with the White House and the National Institute on Drug Abuse. The program won national acclaim. In 1981, Paul founded the Forbes Group, which helps CEOs and boards of directors to -----think, plan and act strategically in the public interest. His clients included more than 100 national corporations, trade associations and professional societies. He retired in 1998.Paul is a classically-trained baritone and has performed throughout the Washington metropolitan area. He is a collector of antiquities and ancient coins, a lecturer on Near Eastern archaeology, and enjoys writing, sculpture and photography. He has been an adjunct professor and lecturer at several universities.

Beverly Vines, Class of 1980, passed

away on August 6, 2013, two days before

her birthday. Beverly enjoyed her years at

Erasmus and made many long-lasting

friendships while attending Erasmus.

Beverly was on the Booster squad and

participated in dance. Beverly was an excel-

lent student, loved learning and especially

enjoyed her Science classes, as

they were her favorite. Erasmus Hall was

truly home for her, as she and her three

brothers, Norman, Darryl and, Steve also attended the school. Beverly

would regularly go to football games to watch her brothers play and cheer

on her Dutchmen.

Beverly's dedication to Erasmus did not stop at graduation. She

served on the Erasmus Hall High School Alumni Association and chaired

the Scholarship Committee. Beverly participated in many activities to raise

funds for the athletic and educational programs of the school.

Beverly can best be remembered by her winning smile and outgoing

spirit. We miss her sorely, and she will never be forgotten.

No words can describe the excitement, love and joy that filled our hearts during

the wonderful celebration of reunion with classmates after 50 years. The Class of '63

celebrated at Erasmus Hall and then on to dinner and dancing at the LaGuardia Shera-

ton.

Alumni came from all over the country to reunite with long lost friends from their

Buff and Blue days. Anne Zaslau joined her students and led the cheers and dancing

with her incredible spirit and energy.

New friends were made and old friends reconnected during the night of laughter

and tears. I was so happy to be among them.

Cathleen Wright-Lewis graduated in 1976. While attending Erasmus, Cathie

Wright ran track, was a member of the Music and Art Mini School, orchestra and the

marching band. After graduation, Cathie became an educator and published au-

thor.

Raised in the Brownsville section of Brooklyn, Cathie has committed her life

to ensuring that others know that hope lives behind the walls of projects.

Cathie's current book is entitled, "Maurya's Seed - why hope lives behind project

walls." Maurya's Seed tells the story of the aftermath of slavery. More precisely, it gives

the updated status of African slave descendants living in urban America. Fiction rooted in

truth. This book tells a compelling story.
