It is aimed at personal challenge, service and responsibility, developed through a range of activities in the areas of service, skills, physical recreation and adventurous journeys. There are three levels: Bronze (for those 14 years and older), Silver (for those 15 years and older) and Gold (for those 16 years and older). In New South Wales the Scheme is overseen by an office connected to the Department of Sport and Recreation. At Grammar, I co-ordinate the Scheme and we operate under the International Online record book system. I provide information to boys and issue the required papers and monitor online enrolment and the recording of activities. There is generally one intake of new participants at the beginning of each term. Only activities approved by the School will be allowed to count as DEAS activities. All activities must be pursued out of class time and must involve at least 1 hour per week regularly over the relevant period. ** These are minimum time requirements and are expressed in whole months, during which there should be regular commitment. Regular time commitment is at least one (1) hour per week, but award participants are encouraged to continue their activities beyond the minimum time. ** Satisfactory completion of the Adventurous Journey Section includes preparation and training appropriate for the journeys being undertaken and at least one practice journey of a similar nature and duration to the qualifying journey. Adventurous Journeys (i) Practice expeditions may be undertaken through the organisations listed below, and must be

completed before the qualifying journey. Cadet camps do not meet the criteria for Adventurous Journeys. All journeys must be the same type of activity for both Practice and Qualifying e.g. Pack and Paddle or a hike; but must be over two different routes.

(ii) All qualifying expeditions must be undertaken with direct supervision under the management of the Collaroy Centre, Camp Somerset, NSW Sport and Recreation, Southbound Adventures, The Outdoor Education Group or Outward Bound and I must have given prior written approval. This approval must cover the names of the Grammar boys taking part, the route and the dates of the hike/s. Boys should collect a SGS hike permission form for this purpose.
