Service Above Self
The 3rd annual medical/dental mission on December 2
at the Our Lady of Sacred Heart Chapel led by Service
Chair Dr Marlene Martinez and members of the Makati
Chapter of the Philippine Dental Society, with PP Dr
Roger Belleza and PE Dr Eui Bong Jung handling the
medical aspect, served 210 indigent patients, with as-
sistance from our Rotaractors and Interactors. (Click or

The inter-city meeting at Richmonde Eastwood Hotel on
December 3 afforded Holy Spirit Rotarians and associ-
ate members to learn and discuss election-related con-
cerns with the guest speakers. We also had the oppor-
tunity to interact with fellow Rotarians from Green-
meadows, Eastwood, Timog QC, and Antipolo RID 3800
which co-hosted the event. (Click or tap on photo)
On December 4, together with RC Timog QC, we hosted
the DGE Francis Rivera and Presidents-elect Golf Invita-
tional, a fund-raising project to support training ex-
penses of PEs, at the Philippine Navy Golf Course in
Fort Bonifacio, Makati City, where Holy Spirit Rtn David
Kim emerged overall champion!
On December 10, we supported the 4th annual Essay
Writing Contest on the Values of The Four-way Test,
sponsored by RC Pag-asa QC and Gateways Institute of
Science and Technology. Adm Chair Ric Salvador
served as chair of the panel of judges that included
noted writer-editor Bob Autor, Peace President of RC
Uptown Cubao, and Peace President Beth Directo of RC
Camp Aguinaldo, which evaluated and rated 12 finalists
who competed in the contest.
Message from Holy Spirit Peace President Marcia Salvador
My dear fellow Rotarians, Associates and Partners in Service,
It has been a truly wonderful 2012 for our club and we have so much to be thankful
to God for. We look to 2013 with much optimism and courage that, with God’s
grace, we may be able to continue to serve better selflessly.
December was a particularly busy month for RCHS. It was a month characterized by
service, fellowship, victory, charity and sheer blessedness.
January is ROTARY AWARENESS MONTH in the Rotary Calendar

On December 13, we held our traditional club Christmas party at the residence
of AG/PP Linda Palattao where we had great food, drinks, fun and fellowship.
Our Rotaractors assisted event chair Marlene Martinez who conceptualized and
administered the games for grown-up Rotarians. In the photo at right contestants
PN Willy, CP Nides, Percy and IPP Ped struggled to insert thread into the needle
hole. To celebrate Rotary Family Month, Rotarians brought along members of
their family to share in the fun.

On December 14, twenty students from our adopted school, Dona Juana Ele-
mentary School (DJES) won 2nd prize in the District 3780 Super Pinoy Kid Drama-
tization Contest held at the Rotary Center. These students belonging to Grades
III through VI were auditioned, mentored and rehearsed by our very own Rotarac-
tors. The event was organized by RC New Manila Heights with 35 co-hosts includ-
ing RC Holy Spirit. (Click or tap on photo to watch video on YouTube)
In recognition of the services rendered by our Rotaractors, we sponsored the
participation of 9 members to the District Rotaract Christmas party on December
15. They joined the Talentadong Rotaractor Contest, won first place and went
home with a cash prize.
On December 18, we brought joy. toys, gifts and game prizes for 85 SPED chil-
dren of DJES during their Christmas party. The stuffed toys were sent by Mr &
Mrs Zyrel Rojo from California, USA. PP Beth Sy arranged with benefactor-friends
who came to provide 140 meal packs of Jollibee fried chicken and spaghetti –
more than enough to feed the children, their teachers and parents who were
present. Thanks to benefactors Liza Ong, Weng Santiago and Wilma Rizaldo.

The following day, December 19, two (2) activities kept us involved:
Christmas treat for the 60 malnourished Grade I pupils of the club’s milk-
feeding program at DJES. Spaghetti and fried chicken were given to the chil-
dren, courtesy Ms Femina, daughter of Feeding & Nutrition Project Chair PP
Beth Sy and associate Jerry Sy. Pres Marcia and Sec JR Delgra helped cheer
the young ones.
Distribution of 2000 pcs of ballpoint pens to selected students of Holy Spirit
National High School during their Christmas program. The ball pens were
donated by Star 360 Corporation.
A thanksgiving and fellowship party was tendered by PP Cong Dodgie Osabel at
his residence on December 21 for another of our valued partners-in-service, the

On December 22, two (2) events took place.
In the morning, AG/PP Linda Palattao and Rotarians spread goodwill and Christ-
mas cheers among indigent families in the Payatas area, held at the Elite School
Payatas campus. The program included fun games, gift-giving and sharing lunch
meals & refreshments for 70 children and their parents. The annual event is
regularly sponsored by AG/PP Linda Palattao. This year’s program included sup-
port from RCHS Auditor Marites Nepomuceno, PP Beth Sy & daughter Nica, Asso-
ciate Member Jerry Sy, Sec JR Delgra, and Ric Salvador representing club Presi-
dent Marcia. At the end of the program, 100 noche buena packages donated by
the Buklod ng Paginoon Charity were distributed to the beneficiaries.

In the evening, Ric and I hosted the annual Christmas thanksgiving and fellow-
ship night for 22 Interactors and 12 Rotaractors at the Salvador family resi-
dence, with 10 Rotarians and Associates in attendance. We were delighted that
DGE Francis Rivera came to grace the occasion as guest-of-honor. I shared just
one message for our club’s young and consistently reliable partners-in-service:
“Thank you for always joining us serve the community. We’re really very, very
proud of you!”
Our young partners had fun dining, playing games, dancing and receiving gifts.

On December 27, we turned over to the Servants of Charity organization 40
pieces of high-end cakes provided by Goldilocks Bakeshop. The Servants of
Charity runs a home for 20 abandoned special children and provides pastoral
care to more than a hundred indigent families situated near their compound in
Pingkian Road, Barangay Pasong Tamo, Quezon City. The unexpected but timely
donation was arranged by Rtn Kent Valderrama. The institution held a belated
Christmas party for their wards featuring the Goldilocks cakes. RC Holy Spirit and
Servants of Charity were brought together by IPP Tery Amado of our sister club
RC Marikina North D3800 and long-time Salvador family friend Engr Lito Labi-
ano, himself a benefactor of the institution.
On December 28, I joined some 30 Peace Presidents in a belated Christmas
party held at the Project 6 clubhouse where Gov Penny and Spouse Joan Poli-
carpio wished everyone to enjoy a happy & more meaningful new year. Gov
Penny also announced important forthcoming district events, most immediate of
which is the mid-year review and conference this month.
To all our benefactors, supporters and friends, thank you all for your generosity and support in 2012. May God
bless you and your families
Thanks also to my fellow Rotarians, Associates and Partners in Service for their avid support and participation
in our many service-above-self activities and fellowship events. We congratulate them for their own service for
others that have not been mentioned in this synopsis. This week is the start of a brand-new year. Let us all
gear up to help improve lives in our community and the world through Rotary.
A joyous, peaceful and prosperous New Year to all!

Dear fellow Ro-
tarians,
I am a Japanese
businessman, and
I wear a suit al-
most every day.
The Rotary pin is
always on my la-
pel. It is there because I am proud
to be a Rotarian. Anywhere I go,
people will see the pin and know
who I am. Other Rotarians will see
it and know that I am a friend, and
people who are not Rotarians will
see it as well. I want to be sure that
all of them also understand the
meaning of this pin.
This is why I am asking all of you to
wear your Rotary pin and to raise
awareness of what the pin means. I
believe having that pin on your la-
pel changes you. It makes you
think more before you speak and
before you act. It makes you re-
member, all the time, that you are
a Rotarian – and that as Rotarians,
we are here to help.
All of us should be ready to talk
about Rotary. When someone asks
you about that pin, you should be
ready to answer them. What is Ro-
tary? What does Rotary do? These
are questions that each of us
should always be prepared to an-
swer.
We cannot go to prospective mem-
bers and ask them to join Rotary
only because we want more mem-
bers. We have to show them that
Rotary is a wonderful organization,
and that they will be happier be-
cause they belong to a Rotary club.
When we ask people to join Rotary,
we are doing this to help them as
well. I think all of us are grateful to
the person who asked us to join. I
know that my life is much happier,
and has been much more produc-
tive, because of Rotary. It is clear
to me that the day I joined the Ro-
tary Club of Yashio was a day when
I took my first step down a different
path in life – a path of greater con-
nection, greater satisfaction, and a
deeper sense of fulfillment and
peace.
This is a feeling that I want to share
with others. And I know that one
way to do that is through bringing
in new members. But we must also
do it by raising awareness of Rotary
and Rotary’s work, by focusing on
our public image and wearing our
Rotary pins every day.

The Object of Rotary First formulated in 1910, the Object of Rotary is to encourage and
foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in par-
ticular, to encourage and foster:
FIRST. The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for ser-
vice;
SECOND. High ethical standards in business and professions, the
recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations, and the digni-
fying of each Rotarian's occupation as an opportunity to serve society;
THIRD. The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian's per-
sonal, business, and community life;
FOURTH. The advancement of international understanding, goodwill,
and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional
persons united in the ideal of service.
5 Avenues of Service
Based on the Object of Rotary, the Five Avenues of Service are Rotary’s philosophical cornerstone and the foundation on which club activity is based:
Club Service focuses on strengthening fellowship and ensuring the
effective functioning of the club.
Vocational Service encourages Rotarians to serve others through their
vocations and to practice high ethical standards.
Community Service covers the projects and activities the club under-
takes to improve life in its community.
International Service encompasses actions taken to expand Rotary’s
humanitarian reach around the globe and to promote world under-
standing & peace.
New Generations Service recognizes the positive change imple-
mented by youth and young adults through leadership development
activities, service projects, and exchange programs.
The Four-Way Test Of the things we think, say or do
Is it the TRUTH?
Is it FAIR to all concerned?
Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER
FRIENDSHIPS?
Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
ROTARIAN’S PLEDGE
I am a Rotarian
I will always uphold the TRUTH.
I am a Rotarian
I will always strive to be FAIR
in all of my dealings with my fellowmen.
I am a Rotarian
I will always endeavor to build
GOODWILL and UNDERSTANDING
in my community,
among my countrymen
and people of all nations.
I am a Rotarian
I will always seek to promote
the greatest good
for the greatest number of people
in the spirit of ROTARY SERVICE.
I am a Rotarian
I will always uphold
the Rotary International Motto,
SERVICE ABOVE SELF.
Principles that Guide Rotary
As a Rotarian, I will
1. Exemplify the core value of integrity in all behaviors and activities
2. Use my vocational experience and talents to serve in Rotary
3. Conduct all of my personal, business, and professional affairs ethically, encouraging and fostering high ethical standards as an example to others
4. Be fair in all dealings with others and treat them with the respect due to them as fellow human beings
5. Promote recognition and respect for all occupations which are useful to society
