The Call of the Elderly

Recently Pope Francis held a meeting with the Elderly.

Here are excerpts of his remarks:

In a special way, old age is a time of grace, in which the

Lord renews his call to us: he calls us to safeguard and

transmit the faith, he calls us to pray, especially to inter-

cede; he calls us to be close to those in need. … the elderly,

grandparents have the ability to understand the most diffi-

cult of situations: a great ability! And when they pray for

these situations, their prayer is strong; it is powerful!

Grandparents…are entrusted with great responsibility: to

transmit their life experience, their family history, the his-

tory of a community, of a people; to share wisdom with

simplicity, and the faith itself – the most precious heritage!

…A people who does not take care of grandparents, who

does not treat them well has no future! …Because such a

people loses its memory and is torn from its roots. But be

aware: it is your responsibility to keep these roots alive in

yourselves with prayer, by reading the Gospel and with

works of mercy. In this way we will remain as living trees,

that even in old age will not stop bearing fruit. One of the

most beautiful aspects of family life, of our human life as a

family, is caressing a baby and being caressed by a grand-

father and a grandmother.

Come Visit a Parish Life Ministry this Month during our Mini

Ministry Fair after Mass on November 22/23 in the Fellowship

Hall. This is a great way to learn more about making a differ-

ence—reaching out to people in need and offering care and

support. Refreshments will be served Saturday night and the

Hospitality Committee will host our monthly Coffee and

Donuts Sunday.

Circle of Healing and Hope-Bereavement Committee St. Clare

Circle of Healing and Hope exists to reach out to people who

are grieving significant losses, especially the death of a loved

one, in an effort to help them find healing and hope. Contact

Laura Jines at 541-9680 for more information.

Training for Ministers to the Homebound Meeting has been

postponed to Tuesday, November 18 from 7—9:00 p.m. One

of the important ministries of any parish is that of taking com-

munion to those who are homebound or in nursing home or

hospital settings. This serves to honor the suffering they en-

dure and to maintain their connections with the parish, as well

as offering them the wonderful strengthening, healing power

of the Eucharist. If you would like to be trained for this very

important ministry, please notify Sister Carolyn at 632-3562 or

[email protected].

Good News in Guatemala A big Welcome to our new priests,

Fathers Balthazar, Bernardo and Sergio, as they begin their

ministry in Guastatoya! The 30th of October marks the end of

the school year for children in Guatemala. We sponsored 22

scholarship students from our Sister Parish, Our Lord of Esqui-

pulas in Guastatoya. Congratulations to our 12 students who

will be graduating this year. Please keep them in your prayers.

A display poster is in the Gathering Space. Our fundraiser for

the new school year will be on November 8/9. Please prayer-

fully consider making a donation.

College Care Packages Snacks and candy are needed to mail in

care packages for college students studying for finals. Contact

the parish office or [email protected] to let us know

you can donate and bring your item (labeled college care) to

Fellowship Hall kitchen November 29-30. Help assemble on

December 1 from 5—6 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall.

Dedication of St. John Lateran Basilica In today’s readings, St. Paul writes, “Do you not know that you are

the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?”

As God’s temples, we are to be a visible signs of Christ to all those we meet,

just as Churches are visible signs of our home in Christ. Today, we celebrate

the feast of the Dedication of St. John Lateran Basilica in Rome. It is called,

“the mother and head of all the churches of the city of Rome and the world.”

“The Basilica has had a battered history…it was stripped by vandals

in the fifth century and then restored by Leo the Great in 460; it was almost

totally destroyed by an earthquake in 896 and then rebuilt; 400 years later it

was ravaged by fire and then rebuilt under Clement V, and it was burned

down again in 1360 and then rebuilt by Urban V. The Lateran Basilica is a

symbol of how the Church goes on surviving.” (Fr. Timothy Radcliffe) Just as the Basilica has had a battered history, so do we have trials in our own lives.

One small way to help us rebuild our faith is by listening to Lighthouse Catholic Me-

dia CDs.

We are making room on our kiosk for upcoming Advent and Christmas titles.

The following is a list of inspiring CDs in which we have only one copy left. Be

sure to check the kiosk to view our selections as they will be changing soon.

Contemporary Sainthood by Mark Hart

Defeating Satan’s Deadly Weapon Against Men by Jeff Cavins

The Four Signs of a Dynamic Catholic by Matthew Kelly

God’s Family and Ours: The Church and the Trinity by Dr. Scott Hahn

Green Sex by Jason Evert

The Lamb’s Supper by Dr. Scott Hahn

The Making of a Jewish Nun by Mother Miriam of the Lamb of God

Thank you for your comments at the kiosk! We will try to answer requests

and questions on the www.stclarechurch.org webpage under the Light-

house logo. If there is a certain CD or book you have listened to or read,

please let us know what you liked about it! We would like to publish your

comments in future bulletin announcements. If you have listened to or read

any Lighthouse CDs or books, we’d love to hear your comments...just look for the

“comments” section on the kiosk.
