From the desk of Dr. Robert Andrews www.floridachristian.org SPRING / SUMMER 2017 Headmaster’s Pen Spring 2017 According to the Brookings Institution, education is an essential part of intellectual freedom, and one of its main values is improving how students view, exist in, and participate in the world. Because education is also a social event for most people, it encourages sharing of ideas and experiences among students, which helps students become better members of the community by teaching morals, ethics, and community responsibility. In addition, education helps encourage students to educate themselves and seek out information, and it provides students with the opportunity to learn about many different things, including art, sports, math, literature and history, so that the students are able to discover what interests them. This gives them the basic building blocks needed to succeed in life later on through a career and further education. As Christian parents however, we understand that there is a great difference between getting a good education (human wisdom) and receiving true wisdom. Christian philosopher and theologian, Francis Schaeffer said, “True Christian education is not a negative thing; it is not a matter of isolating the student from the full scope of knowledge. Isolating the student from large sections of human knowledge is not the basis of a Christian education, rather it is giving him or her, the framework or total truth, rooted in the Creator’s existence and in the Bible’s teaching, so that in each step of the formal learning process the student will understand what is true and what is false and why it is true or false. It is not isolating students from human knowledge. It is teaching them in a framework of the total Biblical teaching, beginning with the tremendous central thing, that in the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. It is teaching in this framework, so that on their own level, as they are introduced to all of human knowledge, they are not introduced in the midst of a vacuum, but they are taught each step along the way why what they are hearing is either true or false. That is true education.” The apostle Paul, in writing to the church at Corinth, said this about education. “Where is the wise man? Where is the scholar? Where is the philosopher of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world?” I Corinthians 1:20. In this passage Paul indicates that there is a considerable difference between the wisdom of the world and the wisdom of God. If we compare human wisdom to God’s wisdom we conclude that the sources of wisdom are different, one is from God the Creator, and the other is from man, the created. Godly wisdom is revealed in the Bible while human wisdom depends upon man’s achievement. Human wisdom leads to pride while godly wisdom leads to humility. Human wisdom emphasizes selfish ambition but godly wisdom emphasizes self-giving love for others. Godly wisdom is from the Spirit of God, while human wisdom initiates from human reasoning. Headmaster’s PenSpring 2017

According to the Brookings Institution, education is an essential part of intellectual freedom, and one of its main values is improving how students view, exist in, and participate in the world.

As Christian p a r e n t s however, we understand that there is a great difference between getting a good education (human wisdom) and receiving true wisdom. Christian philosopher and theologian, Francis Schaeffer said, “True Christian education is not a negative thing; it is not a matter of isolating the student from the full scope of knowledge. Isolating the student from large sections of human knowledge is not the basis of a Christian education, rather it is giving him or her, the framework or total truth, rooted in the Creator’s existence and in the Bible’s teaching, so that in

each step of the formal learning process the student will understand what is true and what is false and why it is true or false. That is true education.”

The apostle Paul, in writing to the church at Corinth, said this about education.

Godly

wisdom is from the Spirit of God, while human wisdom initiates from human reasoning.

Paul goes on to summarize how godly wisdom is provided in the age of the church. I Corinthians 1:18 “For the preaching of the cross is to them who perish foolishness, but to us who are saved it is the power of God.” Paul says that it is through the preaching of the cross that the wisdom of God is revealed. At the same time the preaching of the cross exposes the wisdom of man as foolishness. I Corinthians 1:25 “For the foolishness of God is wiser than man’s wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than man’s strength.”

Our job as Christian educators to instruct children is important and necessary, but our responsibility to teach the message of the

cross is even more important and vital. When we look at our children in the context of the school, we rightfully see them in terms of their academic success and the level at which they have improved throughout the year.

Many of them accomplish great things throughout the year, for which teachers and parents can take satisfaction of a job well done. As a school nearing the end of another school year, we realize that the greatest challenge for us is not just the intellectual process. The consideration of each student to determine if they have received the message of the cross is the greater challenge. If we truly believe that only through the preaching of the Gospel a

person can find true wisdom, we will continue to faithfully teach the life changing truth of Jesus’ death, burial and resurrection, and we must not rest until we make every attempt possible to see any student who may have resisted the Gospel all year, come to know Him as Savior.

Parents know that their time to impart true wisdom to their children goes by much too quickly. The question that remains is, will we buy into the world’s philosophy of wisdom that is equated to human knowledge, or will we, as Christian parents and educators, respond as Paul instructed, by teaching the wisdom of God.

Congratulations to Aiden Cuervo, 5th grader, on winning the FCS Geography Bee. The Geography Bee is a school-based competition for all 5th through 8th graders. This is the first time in FCS history that a 5th grader has won!

Aiden qualified, through an online test, for the state level of the National Geographic Bee Competition. He will go to Jacksonville on March 31st, to compete against 99 competitors, grades 4-8, from across the state of Florida. The winner goes to Washington, DC in May to compete against students from across the nation in the National Championship.

Aiden has been an FCS Patriot since the 2nd grade and his teachers are very proud of him! Way to go, Aiden!

Congratulations to eighth graders Rocio Lopez and Daniel Rodriguez for placing second in the Holocaust Reflection Contest sponsored by Nova Southeastern University. Rocio’s winning draw-ing is entitled “Straight Off the Train” and Daniel’s winning film is entitled “Kristallnacht”. This state-

MIDDLE SCHOOL FIELD DAYKerry Wicks, Middle School Principal

Field Day was a huge success with all the middle school students participating in both inside and outside events. The morning was devoted to individual events with the team events occurring after lunch. This was a day-long event with over 280 middle school students competing in group and individual events.

Ribbons were awarded after each event. Students had Chick-Fil-A for a picnic lunch. Many parents came to cheer on the students. The PE department did a fantastic job organizing and running the events. Even high school students were able to come and help run the events. Room parents came out to work and support their students. It just keeps getting better!
