As people have gotten to know The

Current Quarterly over the past year,

many have asked where I got the inspiration

to start this little purse-sized magazine. The

truth is that the magazine was born out of

frustration – frustration that consumers were

not supporting local boutiques because of

misperceptions about available styles and

cost; when the reality here on Cape Cod is

that we have a large number of locally owned

clothing stores that are affordable and carry

clothing for every woman’s aesthetic.

Why is this important to know? Because

the large majority of your money spent at

a locally owned store stays right here on

Cape Cod. Money spent at nationally owned

chain stores – apart from wages paid to local

residents – goes right over the bridge and

does not recycle back into our community.

It is particularly important to keep this in

mind as we enter into the biggest shopping season of the year. Shopping locally is the gift that keeps on giving! And for those of you who don’t have a favorite local store where you buy gifts, we have put together an extensive collection of products available locally to serve as your guide to shopping for everyone on your list. Print: PlaidDay to night, casual to fancy, either or any way, plaid, checkers and tartan patterns are more relevant this season than ever before. Plaid is still showing up in a classic 50s skirt or a 90s style flannel shirt tied around the waist. But the reason it deserves a spot in your wardrobe is because the geometric print can now be found in a sophisticated ankle length pant, a soft and drapey blouse, and even and evening gown.

Material: TweedPerhaps it is the popularity of the TV series Mad Men or the ever present influence of Chanel that has made tweed fabrics so popular this winter; but regardless of the reason, tweeds are showing on the runway and in your local boutique in a big way. Tweed is a rough, unfinished woolen fabric that is often used to create a chevron, striped pattern, herringbone pattern. Show it off in separates or rock a whole suit - either way, you’ll turn heads.

Neckline: Funnel NeckThe upcoming winter trend of the funnel neck is a new take on the classic turtleneck. It follows the idea of a cowl neckline but has a little more structure to it. The neckline does not go up as high therefore it is not as drastic; however it still provides warmth. In big chunky sweaters or heavier coats to bundle up in, the funnel neck still provides a chic and stylish look that will become a new classic.

Detail: PleatPleats have been around for years, but now the trend goes further than schoolgirl image and enters the realm of femininity in a figure-flattering manner. They provide a new detail to skirts, and movement to a look while keeping it light. Knife, accordion, or superfine they show a different style. Pleats are so versatile that they can be worn heading to the office and then a girls’ night out showing off your style every step of the way.

The cat eye eyeliner style is the perfect blend of retro style with modern flair.

With a simple flick of a brush you change your style into a chic and classic look. It’s magic in the form of make up! But this winter season not only is it a dressy look, it can be taken to everyday wear. By keeping the line on the thinner side and the wing closer to the eye, it can be worn for any occasion. For daytime, keep the rest of the makeup minimal and clean. If you are feeling a punk rock vibe that day, take a smudger brush and blend away to give an effortless smoky effect. Then when you are ready to go and have some fun at night, just extend the line, make it a little thicker, line your waterline and you’re ready for anything the night has to offer. The cat eye is great at transforming not only your style but also the actual eye. For women with slightly down turned eyes, the wing of the cat eye style can help the eye appear more open. For women with smaller eyes, the extension of the lash line with the liner can make the eye appear fuller and longer. Not only can it alter the size and direction of the eye, it can also distract from any puffiness on the lower lash line if it remains clean. No matter what eye shape or type you have, the cat eyeliner can transform any look.

A winter coat is something you wear every day for four months, so choosing the

right one that will last, reflects your style, and flatters your body is an important investment. Finding the right winter coat has gotten easier as innovative designs and more relaxed style rules have evolved so that it is possible to find one coat for all of your needs.

First, look for one that fits into your life. If you have a corporate job, a dress coat will serve you better. If you are a stay-at-home mom, look for one that is more casual and a darker color. STYLE PROFILE

Alison Kelly graduated from Barnstable High School in 1999, and went on to study jewelry design at an affiliate institute of Parsons abroad, and then fashion design in Florence, Italy. She ultimately graduated with a BFA in Fashion Design from Mass College of Art and Design. Since college she has had a clothing line in some form, and in 2006 she was a contestant on Project Runway. Here’s what she has been up to since.

CQ: You rebranded Dahl in 2012, can you tell me how that came about? AK: I was married in 2011 and designed my wedding gown and seven mismatched bridesmaids dresses in blush pink. This mini-collection literally became the catalyst for a new bridal and party dress line for Dahl. I hadn't wanted to touch the bridal industry before that, because I found it stale and full of clichés. I asked myself: why shouldn't the fabrics and silhouettes used in bridal be comparable to ready-to-wear or high-end fashion? Then all of a sudden, weddings were becoming much cooler, and people seemed to be having a lot of fun with them. Not all women fit into the traditional bridal molds of style and aesthetic, and I felt that I may have something valuable to offer them.

CQ: Who/what would you say influences your work? How do you get inspiration for your designs?

AK: Vintage gowns and textiles, iconic pioneers in fashion like Isabella Blow, Vivienne Westwood, Grace Coddington, artists such as Erte, John Singer Sargent, Marilyn Minter, Shae DeTar, walking on Long Beach in Centerville, the Brewster flats. Aside from all of that, real women inspire my work. Working one on one with a client to create their ideal silhouette is very influential and an invaluable tool in terms of getting to know what women are wanting in a dress, what their idea of beauty is and how they want to celebrate it.

CQ: Who is your target customer? AK: A bohemian, a free spirit, a shameless romantic, a bride wanting to adorn her maids in mismatched dresses or vintage-inspired frocks, the no-fuss bride, the non-bride bride...

CQ: In your opinion, what is the most challenging thing about being a fashion designer? AK: I am not your typical fashion designer seeing that I run a boutique business. I tend to work directly with my clients and produce on a relatively smaller scale; everything is sourced and produced domestically and fairly - which comes at a cost. I find the biggest challenge in the fashion industry is sustainability. The US makes only 2% of it's consumer fashion, with most design houses producing overseas for a fraction of the cost it

takes to produce at home, selling at extremely lower costs than what seems fair, creates a conundrum and a bit of a fast-fashion nightmare.

CQ: And the most rewarding? AK: I was never one to fantasize about the perfect white wedding, so I was shocked by how much I enjoyed planning the artistic details of my own celebration. I get a charge out of working with clients on color schemes and fabric choices, to lend a hand in bringing their vision to life. The biggest gift is when I receive photos from a bride or client; to see my dresses come to life as characters in someone else’s story can be heartwarming and encouraging.

CQ: What advice would you give people who are interested in getting into the field? AK: I believe that experience is everything. If you're interested in becoming a fashion designer take classes, learn to sew and draft patterns, intern for a designer. You can begin by getting the sewing book I wrote, The BurdaStyle Sewing Handbook, which is full of projects for the novice to the advanced sewer. I studied fashion in college and my one regret was not taking business classes, which would have been extremely very helpful now. Study many aspects of the field and see where you end up.
