e Dear Readers,
Welcome to the final issue of 2014! I must say this has certainly been a whirlwind of a year and I’m certainly looking forward to Christmas with my friends and family. Of course I’ve been getting used to being a step-mum too and even though ‘my’ girls are 17 and 18 years old now I will still have fun decorating their bedrooms with fairy lights and making up stockings for them. Apparently I’m the ‘best step-mum’ they tell me.
As usual it’s been a busy couple of months since the last issue and of course I’ve been out and about in town as much as possible. I had a fantastic evening with hubby as we watched the Torch Light Procession on Chapel Green. It was a glorious evening and the atmosphere was buzzing. I love the traditional events that take place in town and it’s always a great opportunity to catch up with so many friends at the same time. Well done to the Carnival & Bonfire Society for another excellent day!
Despite the weather on the bank holiday it was great to see so many people at the Crowborough Hospital Fete. We squeezed ourselves into the buildings where all the stalls had been moved to and had a great wander around. I must admit that I’m quite a bookworm and get rather carried away looking through the book stalls. By the time we reached the car after the fete we were soaked through
but it had been worth it.
So, what do the next couple of months have in store for Crowborough? Lots of Christmas Fairs of course! I always enjoy going to the local fairs to do Christmas shopping as they do provide a great opportunity to pick up some unique gifts for family and friends and they are super for finding the stocking filler presents too. You’ll find all the details on page 18.
The crossword has been sponsored by Guest’s Shoe Services so if you can complete the crossword then you could be in with a chance to win a £25 voucher to spend there. I always find it extremely difficult to visit the shop without leaving with a new pair of boots as owner Jenny will know!
As usual, don’t forget to mention The Crowborough Directory if you are responding to anything you’ve seen featured in this magazine as it helps to secure it’s future. The next deadline for
content and advertising requests is Friday 28th November for the January/February issue.
Wishing you all a wonderful festive season...

The race is one of Sussex’s most popular and friendly 10K Sussex Grand Prix road race and includes a challenging route and incorporates a ford and a nice hill. The attracts up to 500 runners from all over Sussex and beyond and has been held for over 27 years.
The race is hosted by Crowborough Runners, founded way back in 1982 when a group of enthusiastic athletes, having watched the first London Marathon, thought it was time the running scene hit the roads of sunny Crowborough. The Club has gone from strength to strength and now has both adult and junior sections and also now runs a training session for beginners on the track at Freedom Leisure in Crowborough which now has over 25 Run-England runners on Mondays many of whom started running from scratch but who are no able to run 5K after only a few months with the Club.
The Club has been campiagning to get a very old running track and athletics facilities improved for some time. The Club is hoping to get funding help in future so that the old, pot holed cinder running track in Crowborough, the last known laid cinder facilities in the UK, can be modernised to help the Club improve its ability to attract athletes and to carry on the 2012 Olympic spirit. It is currently seeking funding partners. All the Club’s activities and training times can be found at www.crowboroughrunners.org.uk and on Facebook

2014
Crowborough Town Council, in consultation with the Crowborough skate park group, has commissioned an upgrade of the skate park at Goldsmiths Recreation Ground.
Three manufacturers were invited to submit designs to the council. The end users were given the opportunity to meet the contractors, look at the designs, influence changes and to help in finalising the end design.
Tommy Chamberlain, member of the Crowborough skate parks group and spokesman said “The skaters of Crowborough are thankful to both Crowborough Town Council and the contractor Wheelscape for the upgrade of our beloved skate park. The skate park has definitely seen better days and it’s great to know that the upgrade will give it a new lease of life. After a year of liaising
with Crowborough Town Council, we have worked out a design that has used the input of local skaters and have created something wonderful for us all to use for many years to come. We are so excited to see this project come to fruition and we hope that it will encourage people to become part of our ever growing community.”
The work on the skate park is expected to be completed by the end of October and it is hoped that the upgrade of the facility will encourage more youngsters to take up the sport.
Cllr Kay Moss, Chairman of the Sport, Recreation and Cemetery Committee said “This is a terrific example of the community working together. The skate park users approached the town council with their request and the upgraded skate park at Goldsmiths is the result of consultation with the young people of Crowborough.”

Owlsbury Allotment Tenants Association.
The Owlsbury Allotment site is situated in an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in a rural area. Allotment holders can enjoy the peace and tranquillity of the area as well as the wonderful views over the
Sussex countryside. Owlsbury Allotment Tenants Association (OATS), is working to build its own community and
has a growing, enthusiastic membership who are keen to contribute to the local community. This year OATS participated in the Crowborough Summer Fair for the first time with an information table.
OATS held a very successful free summer BBQ for its members and there are plans
afoot for an autumn event to be held at a local hostelry with a pumpkin carving competition, a quiz and free nibbles. It’s a great opportunity for fellow allotment holders to chat, compare successes and failures, exchange tips and ideas and generally relax and talk all things allotments! OATS has also arranged many benefits for its members such as insurance, local garden centre discounts and the provision of horse manure and mushroom compost, delivered onsite and at very reasonable rates.
There are plots available at Owlsbury (please contact Crowborough Town Council) and new members are always welcome to the OATS community.

On the 22nd March 1990 the towns of Horwich and Crowborough entered into a historic twinning arrangement when they became the first towns within this country to sign a Twinning Charter.
Horwich is situated in the beautiful rural setting of the West Pennine Moors. It is a vibrant town rich in heritage and is home to 20,000 people. Crowborough and Horwich, through the signing of the charter, pledged to promote exchanges of a cultural, social and sporting nature of interest.
Since 1990 the carnival societies of both towns have had many exchanges and visitors to Horwich from Crowborough have been grateful for the warm and welcoming reception received.
It is hoped that in marking the bond of 25 years a ‘Friends of Horwich’ society can be established which will take forward the original aims of the twinning. If you are interested in getting involved in this project the council would love to hear from you. Please email [email protected] to register your interest.

Annual Chamber Awards
The Crowborough and District Chamber of Commerce celebrated its third anniversary at the Annual Chamber Review on the 18th September. The evening looked back on what the Chamber has achieved in the last year and forward to future plans, the evening culminated in the presentation of the Annual Chamber
Awards, congratulations to our winners:
Business Person of the Year - Steve Edwards, T&T DIYNon retailer of the Year - Kemp AccountantsCustomer Service of the Year - ZestRetailer of the Year - Harris & HoolePresident’s Award - Jenny Rickwood, Guest’s Shoe Services
Harris & Hoole’s win was poignant as it came just days before the Coffee Shop sadly shut its doors for the last time, although the vast majority of the votes had come in before the closure announcement.
The Chamber was also delighted to present the Crowborough First Responders with a donation of £1,000 which was made up of money raised at this year’s Summer Fun Day and other Chamber events.
Over the next year the Chamber will be looking at further initiatives to aid and boost trade in the town and surrounding areas. We will be teaming up with Beacon Academy to provide help, advice and training to assist school leavers with the transition from education to work. The Chamber is also looking at setting up a Business Expo for local companies to promote their services.
If you would like more information on how to become part of the Chamber please visit www.crowboroughchamber.co.uk or contact [email protected]

re The Barrister Broker - reducing your legal costs The last couple of months have flown by and I seem to be frequenting C r o w b o r o u g h more and more as the message
about how I help people reduce their legal fees is starting to sink in. Being down the road it’s easy to meet up for a talk in person which is sometimes easier than over the phone. Mind you, it’s not all work when I’m in town - I experienced my first Crowborough Torch Light Procession which was fantastic.
The vast majority of enquiries I receive following these articles are from people either about to, or already in the process of going through a divorce. I recently read a statistic that almost 50% of all marriages end in divorce. Perhaps this is because there isn’t any stigma attached with being divorced as there once used to be.
My first marriage lasted 12 years which some consider pretty good going. Casting my mind back to when I knew my marriage had realistically come to the end of the road, I recall how incredibly difficult it was to pluck up the courage to discuss this with my wife. Not only was there the two of us to consider but also parents, friends, and in our case two young children. I remember feeling shame and guilt of a failed marriage and the dread of having to tell people. That’s a big reason I suspect why many people decide to stay in an unhappy relationship to avoid putting themselves through that pain.
Well, take it from me that despite those difficult initial months, taking the decision to separate and get divorced worked out to be one of the best things I ever did. Not just for me but for my ex-wife AND my children. Life does get
better and you become happy again. Doesn’t that sound great? You find your new found happiness also rubs off onto other people around you. My relationship with my children improved immensely even though they lived with their mum. Having them every other weekend meant I made sure we had quality time together. I even learned to cook... but that is another story.
As one gentleman told me after we had spoken on the phone recently, I should clearly state in these articles - “Before you consider anything, consider this FIRST!”. He was gutted he hadn’t known about my service a year ago when his divorce proceedings started.
So, if you or someone you know is going through divorce or separation or having issues over the contact or residence of their children, consider this first. It costs nothing to speak to me but I could save you a lot of anxiety, time and money by providing you with the route to the most expert and cost-effective legal option available - straight to a Barrister. They are the legal experts and will give you no-nonsense, comprehensive advice on how to deal with your situation quickly and cost-effectively. Unlike solicitors who usually charge by the hour, using a Barrister via my service will mean, for the main part, paying a “fixed fee” for the work they undertake so you know in advance what it is going to cost before you commit yourself.
This is the Christmas edition of this magazine. January, being the start of a New Year usually means an influx in divorce petitions being issued - New Year, New Start, New Life! Make my number the first number you call.
Remember, it costs nothing to speak to me but I could end up saving you thousands! Call me in confidence on 01732 866 562.
