40 Days of CommunityBetter Than Ever Together

going on now through March 20

on february 6, BCBC will dive into 40 Days of Community. This year’s 40 Days Campaign will feature all-new Sunday School lessons and pastor Carter will bring a fresh perspective to his Sunday sermons. This is not the same old, same old. we already know we’re Better than Ever together, but now we are reaching Beyond Brushy Creek to show area neighborhoods the heart of our church and most impor-tantly, God’s love. highlight the next 40 Days on your calendar to make room for the many events this program will bring. you’ll be surprised at the changes you’ll see inside your home, out your front door, and within your heart.

As you will know, we Are revisiting 40 DAys of Community. and we will be reminding ourselves that we are “better together.” one of the things that we do better together is outreach. here’s a sugges-tion on how your class might reach out together during this 40 Days:

week 2: as a Sunday School class, choose the neighbor-hood of one/some of your families to be your focus. Begin praying as a class for folks in that neighborhood who may be lost.

weeks 3 and 4: as a class, do an act of service for the people in your target neighborhood. a list of possible service activities will be provided (i.e.: giving 9 volt batteries for smoke detectors, or energy efficient light bulbs, or raking yards, etc.). as you do your act of service, give each family a Connection Card from our church. it will explain who you are and why you are doing the project. it will also include space for them to offer suggestions on how we might better serve the community, and it will

give them opportunity to pass along any personal prayer requests that they might have – anonymously or not. The card will have space for the address of one of your class families in the neighborhood. The class can provide stamps.

week 4: The class neighbor will then respond to any Connection Cards that have been mailed back. The follow-up letter will ask about developments concerning the submitted prayer requests. included also will be an invita-tion to your Sunday School class friendship party, to be held after class and worship on week 5. This way they will be there to hear the lesson on Serving Together, which will help to further explain to them what you have been doing.

week 5: party hearty!

let me encourage each of our adult Sunday School classes to join in this project. it will be a great blessing for 40 Days, and it will open the door for further ministry outside the walls of the church.

No Festus, doc or Miss kitty?! by Dr. Ralph Carter | Pastor

when i wAs A boy, one of my Dad’s favorite TV shows was Gunsmoke. lots of nights we gathered around our old philco black and white to watch another episode. James arness, who played Marshall Matthew Dillon, was the star of the show. every episode began and ended with him standing in the streets of Dodge City ready to draw down on a bad guy. Boot hill was filled with men who thought they were faster.

Bring back good memories? it does for me. But who can think of Gunsmoke and not also think of Chester (bet if you’re my age you nicknamed somebody who walked with a limp after him)? and even though he came after Chester, what about festus? what a character that wily, ole mule riding deputy was! remember Doc? how about Miss kitty? reckon how long she carried the torch for Marshall Dillon? hey, and don’t forget Sam, the bartender or newly o’Brien, the young deputy. Did you know for two seasons Burt reynolds was a part of the cast?

each of those characters brought something to the show. imagine Gunsmoke without festus, Doc or Miss kitty? it just wouldn’t have been the same. nope, they were definitely Better Together! and so are we! Don’t make us go it alone. Join us every Sunday in february and March and discover just why it’s so important that we all be together! it just won’t be the same without you!

Senior Adults

Are you reADy to get reenergizeD? i hope so! i am so excited about 40 Days of Community! last year we began learning what community is all about, so this year let’s take it up a notch. let’s really pull together and make a difference in each others’ lives and in the lives of our extended community! Don’t forget to join a Sunday School class for the next seven weeks, if you aren’t already plugged in somewhere! Because we are BEttEr than ever togEthEr!

Get Plugged in by Angela Carter | College Minister & Director of Missions

hEllo EvEryonE! i hope you jump in and participate with us during the next 40 days. i believe the Bible teaches us we are better together. listen to what the apostle paul wrote to the church at Corinth:

12Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ. 13For we were all baptized by[a] one Spirit so as to form one body—whether Jews or Gentiles, slave or free—and we were all given the one Spirit to drink. 14Even so the body is not made up of one part but of many. 15Now if the foot should say, “Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body,” it would not for that reason stop being part of the body. 16And if the ear should say, “Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body,” it would not for that reason stop being part of the body. 17If the whole body were an eye, where would the sense of hearing be? If the whole body were an ear, where would the sense of smell be? 18But in fact God has placed the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be. 19If they were all one part, where would the body be? 20As it is, there are many parts, but one body.” - 1 Corinthians 12:12-20

i believe there are two important principles here:

1. unity is useless without variety. Can you imagine a body only made of ears? how could it see, walk, etc? That’s exactly what paul in stressing in verses 15-20. without variety there would be no Body!

2. Variety is useless without unity. now can you imagine body parts scattered all across a room? So what if the eye, ear, leg, etc., are present! without being together there would be no Body!

please be a part of finding out where you belong in the body of Christ and how to get started serving as we spend the next 40 days discovering that we are better than ever together!

Becoming stronger by Jeremiah Oliver | Middle School Pastor

exciting stuff This Year! by Benji Ladd | High School Pastor

As A believer, i Am so thAnkful that i have brothers and sisters in Christ who encourage me and are consistently there when i need them. ecclesiastes 4:12 says, “Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. a chord of three strands is not quickly broken.” what a powerful thought! Two is stronger than one, but three is hard to break! all throughout the Bible you see our faithful God emphasizing the idea that “we are better together!”

what if the church began to function as if we loved God with everything in us, and loved our neighbors as we love ourselves? how much stronger would we become? how would the world begin to view the Christian church as a whole? how many people would see the love of God in us and begin to long for the same? i believe we would see many come to Christ and many wayward believers would repent and turn back to the lord!

one year ago, we began the 40 days of community campaign as a church and it’s about to start again on february 6! This Sunday school driven campaign helped us build community at BCBC and we think this idea of commu-nity among believers is so important that we are going to do it again! i challenge all of you to commit to being a part of Sunday school for the entirety of this campaign. let’s truly become “better together” in 2011! i look forward to seeing how much stronger we become as a local body of believers as we seek to love the lord with all of our hearts, and learn to love each other as well. please do not miss out on this wonderful opportunity to become stronger as a church!
