Some literary works penned by authors may not be amenable to filming and hence, best left alone as literature targeting readers to fathom the depths of a short story or a novel. The r e c e n t p r e m i e r e a n d screening of Tagore’s Jogajog directed by Sekhar Das at Nandan -1 on May 8, left much to be desired by way of cinematic treatment. S e k h a r D a s ‘ s i n e p t handling of the story-telling t e c h n i q u e w i t h t h e dialogues and personal i n t e r a c t i o n s o f t h e characters were too fast paced to absorb audience a t t e n t i o n b e c o m i n g somewhat tedious in the p r o c e s s a s t h e fi l m progresses.

The screenplay focuses the underlying rivalry be tween two fami l ies representing the aristocratic and the nouveau riche, the difference more effectively projected in Satyajit Ray’s Jalsagar. The beginning started on a wrong note with a Tagore song sequence that c u l m i n a t e d i n a n unconvincing climax when

Kumudini is re united with Madhysudan after it is discovered she is pregnant. The characterization could have been more effective had the film maker focuses on the gradual build-up of the story – line. However, Brata Basu’s

Madhusudan was more than convincing with his projection of brute force that goes with the crude parading of wealth and p o w e r t h i s c h a r a c t e r personifies in Tagore’s novel. Arjun Chakraborty’s r o l e a s B i p r o d a s , K u m u d i n i ’ s b r o t h e r wasmore than adequate to reveal the suffering of a b r o t h e r d o u b t i n g t h e treatment of his religiously bent sister Kumudini in the c a l l o u s h a n d s o f h e r husband Madhusudan. New discovery Shuvolagna Mukherjee’s Portrayal of Kumudini managed to invest in the character sensitivity as the tortured, bethrowed wife given to spirituality coming to grips with a mismatched roguish husband.

The shabby treatment of Sudhu Balobasa Theke Jaai directed by Sandip Bardhan will leave a zero impact on the audience. The story revolving around a romance that evolves between a poor village woman and her old childhood flam who suffers from a physical disability. But she is forced to marry under compulsive

circumstances to a city-bred youth. The film ends in tragedy when her childhood flame dies in an accident. The climax leaves no impression at all, the character being the product of a weak script. Wonders will never cease as to how qualified character actors like Biswajit Chakraborty, Sanghamitra Banerjee and Santana Basu could be associated with such a poor production.
