NEW AT DSC: MYSENIORCENTER

We are excited to share that we have a new, automated check in system at the Dennis Senior Center! The new system, MySenior-Center, is located upstairs and downstairs at the senior center. It’s specifically designed to help our staff members and volunteers manage the various sign-ups and sign-ins, and improve the way we report our services to the town and state.

By quickly and accurately detailing what ser-vices we’re providing, the system will increase our chances of receiving additional state and

federal funding. Today MySeniorCenter is being used by over 800 senior centers across the U.S. and Canada—so it’s a proven tool.

The system is easy to use! Here’s how it works:

1. All visitors and volunteers fill out a registration form and will receive a small key tag. 2. Instead of signing in on a sign in sheet, you’ll swipe your key tag at the scanner, or you can enter your phone number on the touchscreen if

you don’t have your key tag. 3. Press the touchscreen to select the activi-

ties you’ll be participating in that day. 4. Press FINISH.

SUPPORTERS OF THE DENNIS COUNCIL ON AGING

New Look for The Cranberry Scoop

The Supporters are excited to take on the publishing of the new, redesigned, full-color Cranberry Scoop starting with the September/October 2018 issue. We hope you will enjoy it! Share your thoughts with Samatha Kossow, Scoop Editor at (508) 694-2002 or [email protected].

Spring Fling Fundraiser

The May 19th party at The Sea View in Dennis

Port proved to be lots of fun – 150 guests danced the night away to the Crocodile Tears – and helped to provide funds to continue our support of the COA’s programs and services.

Many thanks to the businesses that provided silent auction items: Northside Liquors, Nancy’s Candy, Good Friends Café, Scargo Café, Scargo Pottery, The Cape Playhouse, Seven G’s and our Osterville Airbnb donor. Thanks to all of you who attended and made the evening memorable!

Recent Support

Helping Dennis seniors is what the Senior Center and the Supporters do … which is why we provided funding to repair the front-end of a car belonging to a grandmother who is raising her grandchildren.

We were also a proud sponsor of the Dennis Community Open House on June 22

nd – a first-

of-its-kind event as it brought all age groups together to not only enjoy themselves but learn about the Center’s existing services and those that will be offered once the new building is a reality. And we continue sponsorship for attendance at the Golden Age Adult Day Care Program – a terrific program that benefits both the participants and the caregivers.

Interested in Supporting the Supporters? The Supporters of the Dennis COA is a non-profit, volunteer organization that raises funds for exclusively the Senior Center. By joining the Supporters’ volunteer board and/or making a

tax-deductible contribution, you will be helping Dennis seniors. Email Cindy Harper, Secretary, at ca.harper@comcast. net.

Consult with your physician before beginning any exercise program.

R egular physical activity has many benefits for people with Alzheimer’s

disease. Exercise helps keep muscles, joints, and the heart in good shape. It also helps people stay at a healthy weight and can improve sleep.

Caregivers can help people with Alzheimer’s disease be more active and stay safe:

Be realistic about how much activity can be done at one time. Several 10-minute “mini-workouts” may be best.

Help get the activity started or join in to make the activity more fun.

Find time in the morning for exercise.

Break exercises into simple, easy-to-follow steps.

Choose comfortable clothes that are suitable for the weather and appropriate shoes that fit well.

Make sure both you and the person with Alzheimer’s drink plenty of water when exercising.

Some physical activities to try:

Take a walk together.

Do simple tasks around the house, such as sweeping and raking.

Work in the garden.

Play music and dance.

Exercise with videos made for older people.

Throw a soft rubber exercise ball back and forth.

Lift weights or household items like soup cans.

Use resistance bands, which you can buy in sporting goods stores. Be sure to follow the instructions.

HEALTH INFO

NUTRITION

Are you or someone you know turning 65 or thinking about retiring?

M edigap (supplement) plans provide extra

protection beyond Medicare by filling in

some of the “gaps” in Medicare coverage. In

Massachusetts, the insurance companies allow

continuous open enrollment. You must have

Medicare A and B to enroll, and cannot be

enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan (HMO,

PPO). Anyone who is eligible may enroll or

change plans or coverage levels at any time, with

changes effective the first of the following month.

In Massachusetts, there are

two Medigap plans, Core and

Supplement 1. The Core plan

pays some of the co-pays and

co-insurance for Medicare

covered services, while the

Supplement 1 covers all the

deductibles, co-insurance and co-pays for these

services. With a Medigap policy, you are free to

choose any doctor or hospital that accepts

Medicare and you do not need referrals to see a

specialist.

Trained SHINE volunteers offer free, confi-

dential counseling on all aspects of Medicare

and related health insurance programs to

beneficiaries and their caregivers. Appoint-

ments available at the Senior Center, call 508-

385-5067 to schedule.

Handymen & Home Health/Cleaning Lists are available at the Outreach Office.

NEWS FROM THE OUTREACH DEPARTMENT

A TTENTION: Friendly Visitors, Potential

Friendly Visitors, People who are visited and

those who might want a friendly visitor, we are

starting a Friendly Visitor Volunteer Monthly

meeting in September. Date and time have yet to

be determined. I am looking at the first Friday of

the month, in the afternoon, as our fireplace room

seems available. If you have any thoughts,

please call Marion at the Senior Center.

Another group I am considering for the fall is a

caregivers’ support group. This also would be a

once a month meeting and would be open to any-

one who is a caregiver. If you are interested

please call me.

And lastly, I am considering a library outreach

program where staff or volunteers pick up and

deliver books to our seniors who no longer drive.

We are so fortunate to have five libraries here in

Dennis as well as access to the CLAMS system,

which virtually allows you to find almost any book

in print. As we scale down our belongings, the

library becomes a valuable tool, allowing us to

pass on the too-many books we have collected,

and still have those books at our fingertips.

As you can see, in this publication, Walk and

Talk is off and running. Vern Ellars and I started

this group years ago, and now we have had the

opportunity to take it to another level. Do consider

signing up and getting out there. It is a great way

to start the day.

SAFETY TIPS WITH OFFICER LIZ TUCKER

O nce again after a long and cold winter,

summer is officially here! This summer is

the first full year of the new Cape Cod Rail Trail

expansion being open. As many of you have

probably seen, the bike trail now goes across

Main Street where the former Town Hall used to

be. The trail continues into Yarmouth now and

has created an increase of bicyclists and

pedestrians crossing Main Street. We have

noticed some residents and visitors to our town

have not adjusted to the slight change in the

SUMMER PET SAFETY WITH OFFICER LORI MIRANDA

DENNIS POLICE REASSURANCE PROGRAM

I n the town of Dennis, we have a significant population of elderly people who live alone.

Because they don’t have someone in the home, they are at greater risk of falling or becoming ill and unable to call for help.

The Reassurance Program was created to address this issue and is very simple. Soon after you register, a volunteer from the Police Department

will call you daily at an agreed upon time to check your well-being.

If there is no response after a reasonable amount of attempts, someone will stop by your home to be sure everything is okay.

To enroll in this free program please call the Victims Services Coordinator at the

Dennis Police Department, Kathy Pedini, at 774-352-1472.

COMMUNITY SAFETY - DENNIS POLICE AND FIRE

W e all like to travel with

our pets in the summer

months but on a 78 degree

day, the temperature inside

your vehicle can reach 120

degrees within minutes.

The Dennis Animal Control

Department suggest that

during the summer months you leave your pets

safe at home. In the Town of Dennis there is an

Animal Neglect bylaw which allows Animal

Control and the Police Department to fine anyone

that leaves an animal in a vehicle, endangering

the health and safety of that animal.

Any violation of this provision can result in a fine

up to $100 and/or a charge of Animal Cruelty.

FIRE PREVENTION WITH DENNIS FIRE DEPARTMENT AND THE COA

Fire Prevention Tip #6: Plan and practice your

escape from fire and smoke. If possible, plan

two ways out of every room in your home and

two ways out of your home. Make sure windows

and doors open easily. If the alarm

sounds, get outside and stay outside.

Marie Jainchill, Executive Director

of the Friends of Dennis Senior

Citizens and Brenda Vazquez,

Director of the Dennis Council on

Aging share an embrace at this

year’s Jazz in June on June 2nd

.

I n June 1980, The Cranberry

Scoop went to press for the first

time as a collaboration between Oren Howell, President

of the Friends, and Clifton Wood, Director of the COA.

Both envisioned a senior center where seniors could

gather, socialize and live out retirement in fellowship.

The “Scoop” was the voice of their friendship.

Some 38 years later, 86 people attended Jazz in June -

a celebration of early summer. Jazz in June is now a

tradition at the Senior Center: their founding mothers

and fathers surely smiling all these years later.

AROUND TOWN

ELDER LAW NOTES

By Arthur B. Crooks, Jr.

N ow that summer is underway and the visiting children and grandchildren are

frolicking away, enjoying trips to the beach and organizing backyard cookouts—invariably, the subject of “Estate Planning” regarding “mom-and-pop” comes up. This is usually generated by your children’s natural concern for your wellbeing but can also be generated by the child’s concerns for their “legacies” – in particular the: “Cape Cod House”. The Elder Law Office frequently receives calls from the children or grandchildren after their summer idyll concerning the welfare of their parents/grandparents. When this occurs the question that looms over everything else in the elder law office is: WHO IS THE CLIENT? Elder Law Attorneys are put in a very difficult ethical and legal bind when the “children” or “grandchildren” call to make such inquiries regarding their otherwise competent par-ents/grandparents. If the parents are competent-they should be calling regarding these matters—not their children. If the children feel their parents

are “incompetent,” that is a different story. The typical Elder Law Office, as a default position, generally always considers the “Elder” to be the client. It is extremely important that this distinction be made at the very beginning of an attorney-client relationship and that the “children” know that the parent is the client. The lesson to all readers of the Scoop: with Labor Day looming - beat your kids to the punch and call your favorite Elder Law Attorney to review your documents and make any changes that the kids may have concerns about and that comport with your goals and wishes. There have been many significant changes in both federal and state law in the past few years which may impact your estate plan. And remember: the “kids” will follow up with you at the Thanksgiving Table!
