It is a great pleasure to introduce the 2015 edition of the Paddington Festival brochure which is now in its third year of publication. Our readers will know that we aim to improve year-on-year and we are pleased to note that our reputation has now been endorsed by the Cabinet Office in Whitehall and the Leader of Westminster City Council.Our approach is simple we invest in the local talents and aspirations of our community by invigorating the unique Paddington identity - in a similar way to the Edinburgh Festival. Our belief is that this helps to create a thriving, safe and healthy place in which to live and work. We will give further recognition to these values in 2015 by offering awards for individual and organisational merit.

We continue to consolidate parts of the programme that have been received well by local people - ward based festivals, dance, music, sport, childrens summer play and older peoples activities. The Paddington Film Festival, which proves to be ever popular, has grown yet again with even more local partners taking part, showing films for all ages.

Last year we piloted the idea of a Book Festival to add to Westminster Libraries Summer Reading Challenge, which attracts large numbers of local children. We are pleased to announce that, in conjunction with our

library staff, a Paddington Book Festival will take place again in September along with a few pre-book festival events during the summer.

The Paddington Festival helps to bring together a set of community events and activities that take place throughout the area of Paddington in July and August. For the past couple of years it has mainly focused on Harrow Road, Queens Park and Westbourne Wards. However, events also take place in other Paddington locations: Paddington Green, Paddington Recreation Ground, Paddington Basin, North Paddington Boys Club and beyond. A significant main stage event being the Lebanese Festival held at Paddington Green just before the start of our festival in June. So, we will also help to promote local talent in those areas as well.

I have been to the Paddington Festival many times over the years. I have made lots of friends by going to the festival and I still see them frequently. Its great because it helps people to get out and join in with the rest of the community.

I take part in most of the festival events and love getting involved with the dancing and singing. I always sing along to the musical acts.

Its a good way to find out about whats going on in the local area and Ive started going to things such as an Open Age exercise group after having found out about it at the Queens Park Festival.

I really look forward to the festival; my only complaint is that it is only once a year.

I have been going to the Queens Park Festival on many occasions and now help out on the Open Age stall.I used to buy things on the different stalls and find out about local services. I remember that the library service, the police and even a local bee keeper used to be on hand to answer any questions that you might have.

Nowadays there is live music and children can enjoy playing on the bouncy castle. People often find it hard to meet people when living in London. For people who dont see much of their neighbours, the Paddington Festival is a great way to meet people. Its one of the many good things about living in Westminster.

Louise Proctor is Managing Director of NHS West London Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) and Dr Naomi Katz is a GP in Queens Park and Vice Chair of the Governing Body for West London CCG. The NHS is the main sponsor of this years festival.

Why are you supporting the Paddington Festival?

Louise: We wanted to play a part in this years festival as its a brilliant opportunity to speak face-to-face with residents, especially people we dont otherwise connect with so easily. Patients told us its something they wanted us to do more of. Self-care is a big part of staying healthy, so it makes a huge difference if people have access to the right information, provided in a way that makes sense to them.

Naomi: There are people living in Paddington with whom it is vital for us to communicate for example, people with English as a second language. With these groups, we know that direct contact is so much better than any number of leaflets or letters.

If you could make sure patients and residents attending the festival take away one important message from West London CCG, what would it be?

Louise: Too often, patients end up in hospital or using emergency services, when there are other care options which would be much better. For example, we now have GP

practices open seven days a week which allow patients to walk in or book a same day appointment. For illnesses and injuries that need treatment immediately but arent life-threatening, there is no need to visit A&E; we have urgent care centres available at St. Charles Health and Wellbeing Centre, Chelsea and Westminster Hospital on Fulham Road, and at Charing Cross Hospital on Fulham Palace Road.

Naomi: Pharmacists are able to provide a wide range of care services really quickly; they can give out some medication, and they provide highly qualified confidential advice on all sorts of issues from skin irritations to sexual health. Your pharmacist can supply things like antihistamines and nasal sprays, which can be especially important for self-care during the summer months if you suffer from things like hay fever and asthma.

Monika Pawlowska is a Community and Health Project Officer for Paddington Development Trust. She works alongside the West London NHS Clinical Commissioning Group to help people in Paddington live healthy and active lifestyles.

I run the North Westminster Community Network which brings together local community, voluntary organisations that provide health services and the NHS.

Its important that people know about health services. People often only go to the doctors when theyre in pain but prevention is better than cure.

We run a Community Champions project and are always looking for volunteers. Community Champions are local people who spread important health messages. We appreciate the effort our champions put in and we repay them through training and support with their careers.

We ran a Health Roadshow in Queens Park Gardens with the Community Champions and West London NHS Clinical Commissioning Group. Over 1,000 people came along to join in rock climbing, take part in a health quiz and find out about healthy eating. Weve been working with a nutritionist to make healthy snacks which will be sold outside King Solomon School at home time. Were hoping other schools will come on board.

Thanks to the hard work of the Community Champions people in the area are becoming healthier. They even helped one gentleman to lose 26 kilos. This summer were hitting the streets doing a door-to-door health survey.

The PDT in partnership with the Westbourne Forum and local partners organise the Westbourne Summer Festival which took place by the canal on 7th June this year. Some activities even took place on a barge! Its a great community event with a live stage and freeactivities. We were joined by the NHS who gave out health advice and information to festival goers.

Fiona Doherty is the Community Centres Co-ordinator at the Beethoven Centre and a festival volunteer.

Im responsible for letting people know whats going on during the summer and Im also the main organiser of the film festival. Weve got a huge cinema screen at The Beethoven Centre so Ive always wanted to do something around films. We run it with CityWest Homes and St. Lukes Church and this year we also have Open Age and libraries on board.

Our family films are always popular with around 70 people coming along to each showing and even more for Frozen and Despicable Me. My favourite film is The Searchers with John Wayne as Ethan Edwards. I dont think it would pull in the crowds though so it wont be part of the film festival.

We also run a kids camp with lots of fun things for the children to do such as our healthy eating sessions where the children have a go at making vegetarian sushi, try out the smoothie bike and have fun making animals out of food. Last year we did an end of summer show for the first time and the children spent the whole day practising their circus skills to show their

parents tight rope walking, juggling and plate spinning. We also had a session with Chinese lion dancers who gave the children mini Chinese lion heads to wear.

The Queens Park Festival is one of my favourite festival events. Ive been going since it first started and now Im on the planning committee. Its lots of fun with great live music on stage. Last year we had an acoustic area in the rose garden which was really popular with lots of local bands playing. Adrian Leung, a music teacher from Essendine School, played on stage and in the acoustic area. This year weve invited him to do a workshop for our kids camp.

Ive lived in the area all my life and as it becomes more diverse, its important to have the festival to bring people together. There are so many different events involved and so many people have given up their time to make sure its a success.

As the festival grows, I would like to see more break-off events along the canal, in the streets and in Paddington Basin. I would also like more people to get involved such as the big hotels and businesses in the area so that it attracts people from across London and beyond!
