Bondurant/Pleasant Hill Edition
Managers Message August is always a Busy month, a Great month, a Stupendous month! It’s full of sweet corn,
the Iowa State Fair, Back to School (always a happy time for parents). There is also the Tax
Free Weekend; this year the Tax Holiday (and a holiday it is!) goes from August 2 to August
3. Beware: If you show up for it on Sunday, you'll miss out. Consumers won't pay sales tax
on clothing and footwear items that cost $100 or less. It does work out to be a lot of savings
at a 6% reduction.
The Iowa State Fair dates are August 8 to August 18th. This is something new: coupons in
the August 5th Sunday Register and Wednesday August 8th full page Hy-Vee ad in the
Register will give FREE ADMISSION from 6am to 9am on opening day Thursday. Pretty
short window and probably people waiting in line from the night before waiting to get in free
to the fair.
Wow. I am beginning to sound like an advertisement. But I thought these dates all fell under
the Good to Know category.
So let us get back to sweet corn. You will see sweet corn on the menu in August and bags
of sweet corn in my car.
I would like to clarify and ensure residents they have the availability to reach my assistant or
me. Ashley Gilbert is my assistant manager in Bondurant and Pleasant Hill. If you need me,
she will be able to get me, or you can call me at 515-240-9013. Ask Ashley first; she might
know the answer. However, be assured I will always be available whenever possible if you
need me. There are times when I am gone, but in an emergency Ashley can find me.
We have a new nurse Mary Essex. She will be the Health Care Coordinator for both
buildings. Take time to introduce yourself and get to know her. Shana will remain as the
nurse for Bondurant. We also have many new RA faces, remember to be kind and to give
them a break while they learn the ropes of the job. They have many residents to get to know
and a lot to learn. If there is any help or suggestions you can offer, I know they will
appreciate it.
Let’s hope for a beautiful August; (so far, the weather has been pretty kind to us but we
haven’t been through the fair days yet), good sweet corn, lots of tomatoes and melons, and
a safe first week of school. - Tina Overton, Manager

14 Incredible, Almost Unbelievable Facts About Iowa
1. There are around seven times more hogs than people in Iowa. As of 2013, the state’s hog population was 21.2 million, whereas the human population was just over three million.
2. That’s more hogs than there are people living in the entire state of New York. 3. At 2.4 billion bushels, Iowa produces the most corn of any state, and even more corn than some
countries, like Mexico. 4. Iowa has more golf courses per capita than any other state in the U.S. 5. There are around 67 million chickens living in Iowa. That means there are more chickens living in Iowa
than there are people living in California and Texas combined - and those are the two most populous states in the country.
6. And to bring that into perspective, those hens produce close to 15 billion eggs a year. That’s enough eggs to feed everyone in the WORLD an egg a day for two days, or enough eggs to feed everyone in America an egg a day for 47 days.
7. To bring that to an even larger scale, that's enough eggs to circle the PLANET 21 times. 8. Wright County has the highest percentage of grade-A topsoil in the nation. 9. Cornell College is the only school in the nation to have its entire campus listed on the National Register
of Historic Places. 10. The first winner of the Heisman Trophy, Jay Berwanger, was born in Dubuque in 1914. 11. The town of Fort Atkinson was the only fort ever built by the U.S. government to protect one Indian tribe
from another. 12. Iowa State University is the oldest land grant college in the country. 13. Contrary to popular belief, Iowa’s population is actually more urban than rural, at 61.1 percent urban vs.
38.9 percent rural. 14. One Iowa family farm grows enough food and fiber to feed 279 people. With around 75,000 family
farms in Iowa, that equals about 21 million people fed. That means we could feed everyone in Beijing, the seventh largest city on Earth, for one day.

Just Ask Sue ...
QUESTION: 6 kids decided to ride their bikes down the bike trail that is 5 miles long. Let’s call them Colton, Carter, Isaac, Elijah, Bailey and Annabelle. Colton took off first and rode to the end of the trail. Carter, Isaac and Bailey went half as far as Colton. Annabelle took off and went half as far as Carter, Isaac and Bailey. Elijah was left behind and was unhappy. Isaac told him to just go. Elijah wouldn’t because he didn’t have anyone to ride with. Bailey, who is very kind rode back to get Elijah, stopped to get Annabelle and together they rode their bikes past Isaac and Carter and went 3/4ths as far as Colton. Not to be undone, Carter and Isaac rode their bikes past Bailey, Annabelle, and Elijah and joined Colton at the end of the trail. Bailey, Annabelle, and Elijah decided to go back to the beginning of the trail. The rest of the boys joined them and they began to argue who drove the most miles.
