Worship Services

at Oak Hill United Methodist Church

Is the Church Ready for the Next Step? Southwest Austin is booming! We have a great opportunity to reach more people for Christ and we would like to take our call seriously. Our long-term dreams include the possibility of additional buildings, new worship services, or even a satellite campus. You are invited to participate in an online survey which will give us a picture of where we are as a congregation and whether we are ready to start looking at next steps.

The most important part of our discernment process isn’t about the strategy to be used or the money to be spent, but about whether our congregation is ready to partner with God in such an endeavor. Your input is very valuable in setting the direction. To participate in the survey, click on the link in the church-wide e-mail you received, or go to http://readiness360.org/r360/survey_login.php. The church passcode is 16650899. Thank you for making the time to complete this important survey!

Maundy Thursday commemorates the Last Supper of Jesus with his disciples and the first service of Holy

Communion. Our service will include special music, drama, a short meditation, and Holy Communion. Come remember, reflect, and celebrate communion

with us on this holy day.

Why I Love Oak Hill United Methodist ChurchWhen it is cold and gloomy outside or problems have you feeling down in the dumps, there is nothing as soothing as a warm bowl of homemade soup to set you straight. Oak Hill UMC has always been like that pot of soup to us over the years. The church is the pot and the members are the ingredients to make the soup. The ingredients alone may be spicy like salt and pepper, offensive like onion, bitter like garlic, hard like a potato, and well, you get the idea. The finished product can be a gourmet delight. Soup can be made from anything, even leftovers. These ingredients are placed in a large pot and steeped with the love of Jesus Christ until they become one, then (served to) shared with others as needed. If the pot gets low, just add more ingredients. That is why we love OHUMC. ~ Jimmy Dunks

YOUR TRUSTEES AT WORKThe board of trustees is concerned about the safety of all who use the facilities of Oak Hill UMC. This month the trustees addressed two steep sidewalks: the new sidewalk from the parking lot of the main building to the children’s building and an old sidewalk leading to the front entrance of the main building. The trustees selected Corner Stone Construction Services (Contractor) to remove the steep sidewalk at the front of the main building and replace

it with a safe sidewalk having steps, landings, and railings. The work started on March 7 and was substantially completed on March 11. Additionally the Contractor constructed a partial swale to improve the drainage at the West side of the main building. Water has remained at that location after rains and during heavy rains has flowed into the main building. Regarding the new sidewalk to the children’s building, parents must escort their children to the front door of the chil-dren’s building and meet them at the front door at the end of the pre-school day. Because there is insufficient parking in front of the children’s building, parents use the parking lot for the main building and use the steep sidewalk to get to the front door of the children’s building. Unfortunately there are insufficient funds at this time to add parking for the children’s building or to replace the sidewalk with one having a steps, landings, and railings. As a temporary measure until there is a better solution, the trustees installed signs at the top and bottom of the new sidewalk, warning users that it is a steep sidewalk.

Church Women United MeetingOn Friday, April 5 at 9:30 a.m., the Church Women United will be meeting at St. John UMC, 2140 Allendale Dr. It will be an Ecumenical Development Forum, with the theme TBA. The service project will be collecting eye glasses and hearing aids. (Church Women United - http://www.churchwomen.org/) For more info, call Margaret Jones, 892-2048.

New Lectern Donation and DedicationOn Wednesday, March 13, the church officially dedicated a beauti-ful new lectern. The lectern was commissioned by Alana Oehler and given in memory of her friends Georgia Remeny and Dick Pewthers. As a UMW leader, Alana saw the need for a lectern in the Fellowship Hall. She decided this gift would be both a fitting way to honor her friends and an appropriate way to thank our congregation for the many prayers that were lifted up during the illnesses of these two people. Doug Moody built the lectern using wood salvaged from Mr. Pewthers’ workshop. The cross on the front is a rare mahogany.

(Founded in 1941, Church Women United (CWU) is a national volunteer Christian ecumenical women’s movement initiated and carried out by women in the United States and Puerto Rico. It is a movement that brings together women of diverse races, cultures and traditions in closer Christian fellowship, prayer, advocacy, and action for peace with justice in the world. CWU engages millions of women representing twenty-six supporting denominations and participating Christian women.)

Oak Hill UMC was well represent-ed March 14 with a delivery to the West Rural Community Center. Confirmand class members Bryce Turney, Natalie and Julian Haddad along with their moms Jenny Turney and Susan Haddad, and Adam Matustik filled the shelves of the West Rural food bank pantry. What a great way to spend a por-tion of their spring break.

Participate in the 24-Hour Prayer VigilPlease join the Prayer Discernment team in bathing Oak Hill United Methodist Church in prayer for 24 hours – what a wonderful and faith-filled way to bring us into our Easter services! In addition to a team of dedicated people walking the campus on Saturday, March 30, we want YOU to have the opportunity to pray for your church at a time and in a place that is best for you. You do not have to come to church to join the Prayer Vigil. Beginning at 7 a.m. on March 30 and ending at 7 a.m. on Easter Sunday, you can sign for one (or more!) 30-minute time slots. If you think that you can’t pray for 30 minutes, see the guidelines below that will help you fill that time and even more! Sign up on line through the church website, online in the Narthex after church services (Sundays March 17th and 24th), or on the poster in the Narthex (same Sundays). We believe in the power of prayer – won’t you join us?

Prayer Vigil GuidelinesBegin your prayer time by finding a quiet place, free from distractions and interruptions. If you would like, light a candle that will burn while you pray. Then, ask God to free your mind of thoughts and distrac-tions and guide you in your prayer. Spend a few moments in silent meditation, and then begin your prayer. Pray to God as if you a talking to a dear and trusted friend.

Pray for the church – ask God to bless the buildings with the presence of His Spirit at all times, especially during times of activity.

Pray for the pastors – ask for God to guide them and bless them, and for the pastors to be open for His word and message

Pray for the members of the congregation – those for whom you are able, individually by name. Ask God to bless each of them with health and happiness, and for them to be open to God’s will.

Pray for the groups and ministries of the church: Community Ministries, Adult Ministries, Music Ministries, Children’s Ministries, United Methodist Men, United Methodist Women, Youth Ministries, Stewardship, Stephen Ministers, Prayer Chain, Caring Ministries, Fellowship, Environmental Fellowship, Preschool, Young at Heart, Deaf Ministries, Trustees, SPRC, Church Council, Communications.

Pray for those on your heart – for joys for which to thank God and concerns for which to ask for God’s Grace.

Pray again for the church – for what/who we are today and for our future, and that in all we do and as we continue to grow that it will be God’s will, not our own, that will be our guide.

Remember, prayer can be in many forms – said out loud or silently, on your knees or sitting in a chair, in song or meditation – just remember to stay focused on God!

LENTEN LOCK-IN

Spring Break at CAMP EAGLE

On the Friday school released for Spring Break, 10 intrepid Oak Hill students, along with David Sheets, Todd Jones, and Dave Stewart, left the church for Camp Eagle and parts unknown. We stopped along the way to pick up some adults and students

from Dripping Springs UMC, and headed Southwest. We spent most of the next 60 or so hours hiking, rock-climbing, and spelunking all over the vast acreage that makes up Camp Eagle. We saw beautiful sunsets and sunrises, slept both warm and cold, worshipped with an unbelievable lightening storm backdrop, and bonded in incredible ways. As we were pushed past our limits by the Camp Eagle guides, Kel and Selena, we also experienced God’s nearness and a new depth of community. Our theme for the weekend was “Why Not You?”. During our worship times, we discussed the extraordinary exploits of a very ordinary Nehemiah, and the unbelievable mercy of God “crossing His arms”, much as Jacob did when he blessed Joseph’s sons.     After two and a half days of roughing it (I think if you sleep outside and carry all your food with you, that equals roughing it), we headed for San Antonio, the comforts of a LaQuinta and the extravagance of dinner at Fogo de Chau to celebrate all that we had experienced. It was an incredible weekend, and one that none of us will soon forget.

Easter Egg HuntEveryone’s invited! Saturday, March 30 - 9 to 11:00 a.m.

Please join us for our annual Easter Egg Hunt! There will be a jumpy house, face painting, petting zoo, crafts and food! All festivities will

take place in the Children’s building and the circle driveway in front of the sanctuary. Bring a friend; bring your Easter basket. Hunt times are

9:30 (1st - 5th grade) and 10:15 (Kinder and under). If you have questions, please contact Jenny Turney at

[email protected].

Diane Merwarth, from OHUMC, will be on the team. Applications are on the Emmaus bulletin board in the Fellowship hall facing the parking lot.

Habitat for Humanity Methodist Build The raising of the walls for the Sanchez-Orta house on March 16 was a great success. The house is now fully framed! Twelve of our own helped with the hard work, and we were rewarded mid-day with a fabulous lunch provided by the Regenerates Sunday School Class. We have two more OHUMC work days, April 13th and May 11th. We have a full complement of workers signed up for May 11th but need two more for April 13th (contact Jerry Morford at [email protected] or 301-3738 if you would like to volunteer). The Open Door Sunday School Class will provide lunches on April 27th. As mentioned in the last Cornerstone, our Applebee’s Pancake Breakfast Fundraiser on March 2 netted $1,100. Our total fundrais-ing now stands at $5,500. This is really good, although our goal this year is $10,000. Please consider donating additional funds to reach our goal. You can do this by placing a donation in the offering plate during Sunday services. Make checks out to “OHUMC” with “Habitat for Humanity” in the memo line or place cash in an offering envelope and label it “Habitat for Humanity.” We are building the house for Odalys Sanchez-Orta and her two children (Hersey, who is 11 years old and Yemicel, who is 20 years old); see photo. They waited several years before being ac-cepted by the Cuban immigration program to come to the United States. Odalys says, “In Cuba we lived hand-to-mouth, our wages were the very bare minimum, but we had to learn to adjust.” About the apartment they live in now, “There are severe maintenance problems and nothing feels like ours, the apartment we live in has been lived in by so many other people.” The family is thrilled to be accepted by Habitat for Humanity and is anxious to help build their house. We also need your continued prayers for the success of the Methodist build.
