The Cool Christian Dudes

(excerpt from Five Practices of Fruitful Congregations:

The Practice of Intentional Faith Development by Robert Schnase)

“A group of men were friends and fellow disciples. They served together,

enjoyed fellowship, participated in sports ministries, and even a barbecue

ministry. But they started feeling restless, and each sensed that he needed

something more. They wanted a real connection to other men of faith, a

different and deeper challenge in their spiritual life. One of the men

remarked, “We want to be like a guy I work with. You just know he’s a

Christian by his words and deeds. He’s a cool Christian dude.” At about the

same time, a ministry had begun at the church for young men from the

community who needed a place to play basketball, blow off steam, and hang

out together. The group of friends decided they needed a weekly time to

study and talk about the sermon from the previous Sunday. They decided to

spend time in prayer together, and to include time for sharing whatever was

going on in their lives. They met once a quarter at a pizza place. Then

they decided their main meeting should coincide with the Monday night

basketball games so they could begin to form relationships with the young

men. The younger men could see “regular guys” taking their faith seriously,

learning and growing and laughing and praying together. Their group needed

a name, and they chose what they lightheartedly longed to be: The Cool

Christian Dudes.”

Can you see this and other practices of intentional faith development

bubbling forth from The Springs?! Remember, Jesus said, “Where two or three

are gathered in my name, I am there among them.” (Matthew 18:20)…

Love All Around! Your friend and pastor, Mike…
