Tabula Rosa is how the ancients phrased it, but as a child I knew it better as a “Big Chief.” For one of the highlights of starting every new school year during my elementary days was going to K-Mart to get my classroom supplies, including that blank red tablet with a picture of an Indian warrior on the front, just waiting to be filled with sentences, scribbles, and prac-tice runs for cursive writing.

Today, of course, few schools even teach cursive writing—it’s not required in 41 states, in fact—and some teenagers cannot even read it, as demonstrated by a young witness in a recent murder trial who admitted in court that she could not decipher a document a lawyer handed to her just because it was written in cursive. (OMG, YGTBK! GAFYK!) Likewise, I’m sure that the image of the “Big Chief” is now offensive to some, and if K-Marts are even still in business, I have no idea where I would find one today.

I have to admit, however, that I’m still attracted to the notion of a “blank slate,” particularly as we stand on the threshold of yet another new year. For to be candid, 2014 was a bit of a challenge for us and the great thing about 2015 is that I haven’t sinned even once so far in that year!

LIFE LINESBY PASTOR CHAPPELL TEMPLE

On the other hand, for fellow time travelers from the mid-twentieth century such as myself, the very notation of this new year still seems far too futuristic to be real. For if it actually is going to be 2015, shouldn’t we have those flying cars that were promised to us long ago in the Jetsons? And more seriously, how is it that our culture seems less civil and our society more fractious than even a decade or so ago? For indeed, can anyone look at the

world today and say that we are genuinely progressing onward to a better future?

Fortunately, however, one thing remains not only consistent but even encouraging. For despite the dizzying differences of our day, Jesus Christ is still the same. In math-ematical terms, He is our Constant, the non-varying value that is completely fixed, a nullary needing no arguments in order to prove that He is true, for He simply is. Full stop. Quod erat demonstrandum. QED, or that which is to be shown.

No matter how 2015 begins or ends, thus, or what the pressures of the new year may bring, or even if we never get those flying cars, we have a Constant in whom there is no shadow of turning, who is the same Yesterday, Today, and Forever. What’s

more, not even all the Big Chief tablets in the world would be enough to tell of His glory.

Here’s hoping for both a Faithful and Fruitful Fifteen indeed!

WORSHIPWEEKLY WORSHIP SCHEDULE - SUNDAYSCONTEMPORARY · 8:15 AM · SANCTUARYTRADITIONAL · 9:45 & 11:05 AM · SANCTUARYCASUAL - the hub · 11:00 AM · FAMILY LIFE CENTER GYMYOUTH WORSHIP · 6:00 PM · FAMILY LIFE CENTER GYM

THANK YOU, ALTAR GUILDA simple thank you hardly seems enough for this small, but dedicated, group who meet every first Saturday to prepare the Communion elements for the next day’s worship services in the Sanctuary. They enjoy serving alongside each other as they complete the worshipful work of preparing the elements. They end their service with a special time of prayer for the church before breaking bread together over brunch at Skeeters. Every member of the team says it helps them feel more connected to what happens in worship and therefore enables them to draw closer to God during worship. All say they end up feeling more blessed than they expected. Thanks are also hardly enough for T. J. Szarfarz, who stays up all that night to bake the bread for Communion. Christ Church is truly blessed by these who serve us so well so that we might serve all who come for a holy meal of remembrance and celebration. So. . . .why not consider this once-a-month morning of service and find yourself blessed, too? Our Ministry Coordinator is Sally McKnight; contact her at 713.306.1719.

THANKS, AWESOME ACOLYTES!Our Acolytes and their leaders, Victor and Judy Hicks, Ty Sponsel, and Sharon Hazel, are truly awesome! Thank you - all of you - for assembling the Christmas Eve candles, faux and real, and for preparing the special gift baskets for the family service that were needed in our worship services on Christmas Eve. Thank you, most of all, for your ongoing commitment to worship leadership throughout the year. May God bless each of you with a wonderful 2015 as you continue to serve, bearing the light of Christ to remind us whose we are!

RESOLVE TO SERVE IN 2015Attend worship? Why not resolve this year to volunteer as a Communion servant? Volunteers are needed to help prepare and serve Communion on the first Sundays in traditional worship (9:45, 11:05 am) and every Sunday in the contemporary (8:15) and casual (hub) services. While servers are generally easy to find, preparers are much harder to find. If you would be willing to help in either of these roles, please contact Sandy White at [email protected] or 281.690.4777 for more information and easy training. If you choose to volunteer for the casual service, Sandy will connect you with Jeanne Damon, the hub’s volunteer coordinator.

“MORE BLESSINGS THAN I EVER EXPECTED!”STEPHEN MINISTRYHere’s what one Stephen Minister has to say about Stephen Ministry:

“At first I wasn’t sure about all this caregiving stuff. I mean, didn’t I love others enough already? Then I finished my Stephen Ministry training and met with the person for whom I provided care. Now I know what Christian love is all about! I did not expect the wonderful gifts of love and friendship that God gave me through my caring relationship. What a wonderful ministry this is!”

Pray about and consider this opportunity to grow. For more information, contact Sally McKnight at 713.306.1719.

You talked about the past year, all the memories, good and bad.

But this year you’re alone.

SHARE YOUR JOYS AND CONCERNS WITH USYour pastoral staff and leaders of Christ Church’s Member Care Ministries want to share in your joys and concerns. You might not know this, but hospitals do not

contact churches – even when you give them your church name, address, and contact information. Part of this is due to HIPPA laws. So whether you’re about to enter the

hospital or you’re celebrating the birth of a baby, please call Sandy White in the church office at 281.980.6888. She will forward your message to the pastors and appropriate

member care ministry leaders.

THANK YOU TO ALL WHO HELPED OUT DURING THE CHRISTMAS SEASON!

All who decorated the church, ushered, greeted, acolyted, brought ornaments for the family tree, lit the Advent Wreath, served Communion, provided meals,

showered staff with treats, and volunteered in any way to help.
