Community Assistance FundFunding is provided in response to immediate needs in the community through established non-profit agen-cies. Grants are distributed in amounts up to $500 each through Fall and Spring cycles.

Jefferson AwardsThe Jefferson Awards is designed to encourage and honor outstanding voluntarism. Nominees are judged within four categories: adult, youth, group, and educa-tion. The local finalist competes in Washington, D.C. for the national Grand Award. The program is a joint ef-fort between the Junior League and the Times Record News.

Kids in the KitchenThe goal of this initiative, which is supported by The As-sociation of Junior Leagues International, is to empower youth to make healthy lifestyle choices and help reverse the growth of childhood obesity and its associated health issues. League-wide involvement includes a commu-nity-based, one-day event in addition to mini courses implemented at the Kids’ Café, an after-school program at the Boys and Girls Clubs of Wichita Falls, supported by the Wichita Falls Area Food Bank.

Opportunity KnocksVolunteer time and funding assistance is provided in re-sponse to immediate, short-term needs in the community through established non-profit agencies. Volunteer time ranges from a few hours to a one-day project. Grants are given in amounts up to $1500 each.

Research & DevelopmentInnovative projects are researched and developed for plausible addition to the Community Plan. Projects must meet a need in both the community and the League.

International FriendshipForty-four years of goodwill, understanding and cultural exchange exists between the Junior League and the German Air Force Squadron of the Euro-NATO Joint Jet Pilot Training Program at Sheppard Air Force Base.

Partners In Education & PowerPak 4 KidsThe League will partner with the Wichita Falls Indepen-dent School District to enhance student learning through program and project development and implementation for an adopted school. This volunteer and financial com-mitment also includes the stuffing and delivery of back-packs to the adopted school as part of the Wichita Falls Area Food Bank’s PowerPak 4 Kids initiative, an ongo-ing effort to provide food to at-risk children on weekends and breaks when school meals are not available.

Miracle League Field of DreamsOur current signature project provides for the planning, fundraising, and construction of a Miracle League Field where children with disabilities, ages 3-21, have the op-portunty to experience the joy of playing baseball. The Junior League’s financial commitment to this project is $20,000 per year for five years, totaling $100,000. 2009-2010 marks the fourth of five years.

TrainingTraining is a fundamental and integral component of the Junior League mission. Through job placements and project execution, the Junior League teaches skills andcompetencies to prepare its members to be effectivecommunity leaders. Leadership development and training is what sets the Junior League apart from othercommunity service organizations. Training also reinforc-es a second component of the Junior League mission, improving the potential of women.

Yes, the calendar has just turned to 2010, but it’s already time to start thinking about the 2010-2011 League year. January, in many ways, will be devoted to the process of determining what the next League year holds for you. Soon you will be receiving your preference sheet and attending a satellite meeting with your placement group. I respectfully request you give consid-erable thought to your next steps and our organization’s future before your end-of-the-month meeting where your selections will be submitted for use by the Placement Committee and 2010-2011 Leadership team.

I recently came across what Sondra Shaw-Hardy and Martha Taylor, international leaders and visionaries in the women’s philanthropy movement, called The 6 C’s, which summarize why women give their time, finances and intellect. It confirmed to me the many motivations we have which fuel our desire to give so freely of ourselves through our League service.

Create: Women want to create new solutions to old problems. Women seek to create new organizations or programs within existing organizations. Change: Women give to bring about social change. Women are less interested in providing unrestricted support to preserve the status quo of an organization or institution. Connect: Women prefer to see the human face their gift affects. Women want to build a partnership with people connected with the projects they fund. Collaborate: Women prefer to work with others as part of a larger effort. Women seek to avoid duplication, competition, and waste. Commit: Women often volunteer for causes which they care about. Women often give to the organizations for which they have volunteered. Celebrate: Women seek to celebrate their accomplishments and have fun with philanthropy.

As you begin to contemplate the many volunteer placement opportunities available to you through this AMAZING organiza-tion, ask yourself, what “it” is you want to do and personally gain from your League experience. (Sustainers, this question is also directed to you!)• Do you want to create new programs or facilitate community change? – Then perhaps Research & Development or a chair position on the Community Council is for you. • What about seeing the human face your gift affects? – Then maybe Kids in the Kitchen, Miracle League, or Part ners In Education would be a good fit. • How about working with others as part of a larger effort? – Then quite possibly a steering committee for a large fundraiser is for you. • Is creating ‘social’ change and the perpetuation of our culture of trained volunteers what you’re passionate about? - Then join the training team or Admissions/Provisional committee.There are innumerable possibilities for intriguing challenges and prospects for personal and professional growth inter-spersed throughout the many facets of our organization. I assure each of you that there is a ‘PLACE MEANT’ for you in the JLWF.

With all of that being said, let’s not forget about and keep working towards the many exciting opportunities that already lie ahead within the next five months. Let’s use the fresh start of a new year to renew our commitment to our Mission and spirit of voluntarism to fuel our tanks for the remainder of an already amazing year.

CALL TO ORDER: Ms. Perkins called the meeting to order at 12:01 P.M./7:02 P.M. and thanked the Membership Activities committee for hosting the social.

APPROVAL OF MINUTES: The General Meeting minutes from October 27, 2009 were approved as amended.

COMMUNITY HIGHLIGHT: Mary Stingle, Executive Director and Theresa Davis, Childhood Hunger Coordinator for the Wichita Falls Area Food Bank gave an overview of the different programs that the Food Bank oversees each year, including one of the League’s adopted projects, PowerPak 4 Kids.

ABOVE AND BEYOND THE CALL: Kathy Partridge/Julie Woolsey presented recognition of service to Catherine Earley and Whitney Kirby. Mrs. Williams was also recognized.

AJLI STRATEGIC ROADMAP: Ms. Perkins introduced the basics of AJLI’s strategic roadmap process in preparation to be a thriving and preeminent organization twenty years from now.

HISTORIC HIGHLIGHTS: The Training Committee presented the JLWF timeline from 1970-1979.

COMMUNITY ASSISTANCE FUND: Tammy Robertson/Ms. Perkins presented the Fall 2009 recipients of the Community Assistance Fund.

KIDS IN THE KITCHEN: Alesia Levenson/Ms. Perkins reported that the first Kids in the Kitchen event in association with Camp Fire was a great success.

PROJECT IN A MEETING: Susie Tanner and the PIE Committee led the members in stuffing sacks for PowerPaks 4 Kids for the 108 eligible students as Sam Houston Elementary.

NEW BUSINESS: 1. Karen Gagne announced that the Opportunity Knocks committee will be collecting canned goods for InterFaith Ministries at the League Center until next Monday, November 23.2. Allison Kirkpatrick/Alex Martin announced that the Miracle League Committee will be selling $5 raffle tickets for a Tangles Gift Card benefiting the Miracle League.3. Stacy Finley reminded members of annual cookbook requirements and encouraged purchase of books for holiday gifts.

League Top 3#1: ChrisTmas magiC 2009 - iT’s a wrap! All the packages, trees and decorations are put away in storage. The merchants have traveled down the road and all the shoppers have gifted their treasured finds; and all are very happy. What a wonderful success Christmas Magic 2009 was. The steering committee deserves huge thanks from all of us for wrapping up a wonderful market. Thank you to all the members for helping work your shifts, baking and attending the many events. Another big thank you goes to Jaclyn Meng and Lindsay Greer for your dedication to the League and Christmas Magic. Work has already begun for Christmas Magic 2010, so on your mark, get set, Action!

We have entered a new world of Twitter, My Space, and Facebook. The Board of Directors is diligently working on poli-cies to help us transition into this new generation of social networking. Members of the JLWF can create their own

social media pages and sites; however, they cannot use the name of our League or our logo without the expressed permission of the JLWF. Listed below are some friendly tips when referencing JLWF business on any of your per-sonal pages and sites.1. Be Responsible. Volunteers are personally responsible for their posts. 2. Be Smart. A blog or community post is visible to the entire world. Remember that what you write or pictures you post will be public for a long time – be respectful to the League and protect your privacy.3. Respect Privacy of Others. Don’t publish or cite personal details and photographs about volunteers without their permission.4. Write What You Know if Referencing the JLWF. You have a unique perspective on our organization based on your talents, skills and current responsibilities. Share your knowledge, your passions and your personality in your posts by writing about what you know. If you’re interesting and authentic, you’ll attract readers who understand your specialty and interests. Don’t spread gossip, hearsay or assumptions. 5. Be Respectful. It’s okay to disagree with others but cutting down or insulting readers, volunteers or corporate sponsors and vendors is not. Respect your audience and don’t use obscenities, personal insults, ethnic slurs or other disparaging language to express yourself.

We all at some point may need to enter the League Center by unlocking it with a key. You also must leave the building secured when exiting. The League has recently been fined by the city due to the fact that the police have had to make so many trips to the League Center for security

concerns. This is a misuse of our money, and it requires your immediate attention and action. If you have ques-tions, please ask them before entering the secured build-ing! Don’t ignore the established procedures, hoping to go unnoticed. Here are the steps that MUST be done in order to make sure the security of our building is performed correctly. Step # 1: First enter the security code into the key pad after entering the building.Step# 2: Make a phone call to the security company. (Phone number listed by all the phones.) You will be asked to give your name, the password and how long you will be remaining in the League Center. If you go half an hour past the time you say you will be in the League Center, the security company will be calling you back to see how much longer you will be in the building. They are checking to see if the building has been left without being secured. You must ANSWER THE PHONE! Step# 3: When leaving the building, please make sure that the front door is locked with the key. Turn off the lights. Then re-enter the code into the key pad. THANK YOU FOR YOUR ASSISTANCE!

International Friendship The International Friendship Committee was created for the purpose of promoting lasting friendships between the German community of ENJJPT at Sheppard Air Force Base and the Wichita Falls community. We are proud to report that our committee has worked exceptionally hard this year to achieve this goal. Now, past the legalities, we have had a “rockin’ fun” year!

We have had the pleasure to meet people on our committee that we might not have had the opportunity to meet in the community otherwise. We have been blessed with some very experienced, although quite young spirited, sustainers that have given us some in-valuable advice. This entire year has been a precious learning experience for not only Cari and I, but our entire committee.

Not only is it the goal of IFC to promote friendships within the German community, the Co-Chairs have the added responsibility to be liaisons for the German AF in all functions.

We have attended many events, hosted a few dinners, and served as a representative to the Steering Committee (of the military) for our spon-sored county. Cari and I have been honored with such a huge responsibility, and we strive daily to do our best.

The committee started off the year as guests of the German AF with our first event…the Oktoberfest celebration. Everyone enjoyed some wonderful food, music, conversations, and of course, some tasty German beverages. The opportunity to experience a long-lived tradition of our German friends was truly an honor.

Wanting to repay the favor, we showed them a tradition of ours… Thanksgiving. The IFC members were the hosts for 115 German people, along with our spouses, at Bill and Doris Altman’s house in mid-November. Now planning an event of this magnitude does come with some stress, but the committee really came together to help one another and that was something Cari and I were truly grateful for. We were once again rewarded with great food and wonderful conversation, along with some delicious homemade goodies from the German wives.

This upcoming year is just as exciting. We are once again the guests of the GAF for Road Bowling in February. This consists of rolling a rubber ball (about the size of a softball) down the middle of a country road until it rolls off and stops. This is “your score”. You play against teams, in the freezing cold and wind, for about 2 miles. Any takers??

Next, we will host our traditional Ranch Picnic for them in April. We anticipate a lot of fun with horseback riding, calf roping, great food, lots of chit-chat, and a bunch of BBQ. It’s also a lot of fun to watch the students try to put panties on the calves! Hee-haw!!

Our focus for the upcoming year is simple…to have an amazing time with some wonderful friends of the GAF, and some amazing women of JLWF. This is where amazing happens!

Using Groupshare, users can share files, post news and announcements, set events and reminders for the entire group and host discus-sions among group members. Is it necessary for me to login?To provide specialized content for Junior League members, AJLI.org is divided between a Public Area and Members Area. The Public Area, which has gen-eral information about AJLI and the Junior Leagues, is what most visitors will see when navigating to AJLI.org. The Members Area is specific to Junior League members and can only be accessed once you are enrolled and logged in. If you need assistance with login information, please contact Julie Woolsey, Membership Vice-President at [email protected].

What is the Wall?Located throughout the AJLI.org League and profile pages, the Wall allows Junior League members to add comments that other users will be able to view and respond to. Have a comment or question on a particular League’s project or fundraiser? Post it to that entry’s wall and you’re likely to get a response back from someone in that League.

What is AskAJLI?AskAJLI was created to address all League member inquiries. Have a question about AJLI’s services? A question about support for your League in particu-lar? Submit it to AskAJLI and it will be forwarded to your League liaison and other AJLI staff members. Not only will a representative from AJLI respond in a timely fashion, but once the question and answer are posted, other League members can chime in as well.

What are League Pages?League pages allow Junior Leagues to both archive and showcase their projects, fundraisers, newslet-ters, photos and more to the entire Association. By allowing tagging and commenting on posted content, we encourage enrolled users to browse other League pages to get inspiration or suggestions for their own projects. These pages are not meant to compete with a League’s public website, and, as such, can only be accessed by enrolled members.

AJLI.org 2.0 has been designed from the ground up to network and engage the entire Association, whether you are a League President, Communications Chair, Sustainer or Active member. Think of the traditional AJLI.org, now with added social networking capabilities and other tools tailored for your League and your members.

Placement Advisors

Your strongest voice is your Placement Advisor! She is your advocate, consultant, arbitrator, facilitator, listener and friend. When your Placement Advisor contacts you each month, openly dialogue with her about your cur-rent League experiences. Share your thoughts, feelings, problems and suggestions with her. Talk candidly with her about what you desire from your League experience, including placements you’d like to undertake in the future. She will treat all information confidentially and/or disseminate it only to the appropriate League per-sonnel. If a need arises, call her! She is always available. Most importantly, she will strive to make sure your League needs are being met. Use her to her fullest potential!!!

These requests are for me, as well as numerous other League members, to attend parties and/or purchase products which are of personal benefit to the hostess. There has been quite an influx, especially surrounding the holiday season. I don’t want any of these ladies, especially Giddy Ger-trude, to feel as if I’m being rude or unsupportive of her endeavors, but I prefer not to receive these solicitations on my personal email account just because of my involvement with the League. How do I handle this without hurting feel-ings?

Happy New Year! It’s hard to believe it’s already 2010. We wrapped up 2009 with a wonderful Sustainer Christ-mas Reception in the home of Donna Aboussie. Over 50 people were in attendance, despite the competition with a number of holiday events. It was a festive time of laughter and sharing and a great way to celebrate the season. Thanks to everyone who attended. We are in the process of planning activities for the spring. Our first event of the new year will be in February. De-tails are still being worked out and specifics will be forward to all sustainers soon. For those of you who are Sustaining Advisors, please check in with your committee chairman, especially if you have been unable to attend recent committee meetings. Your participation and input is valuable and with half the League year still ahead, you are an important part of the organization’s continued success. If you have not yet been on the Member Profile section of the Junior League website, we strongly encourage you to log in at www.jlwf.org. There is a wealth of information available to you with click of a mouse. All of the information contained in the “Blue Book” is in the member section, including member names, addresses, phone numbers and email addresses. Each issue of our League Connection will feature a portion of AJLI’s current work towards the development of the new strategic roadmap (the plan to ensure that our organization is

thriving in 2029) for our Association and its member Leagues. The January issue will focus on the first portion of the third strategic question, the AJLI membership model.

AJLI’s Strategic Roadmap: What It Means To You

Strategic Questions: AJLI Membership Model • Is the concept of “lifelong membership” realistic and meaningful as currently practiced? • What are the implications of this “value” and of external trends for our membership model and our value proposition for members? • How should we think about membership categories?

Challenge 1: Membership is declining in the League - Junior League membership has been declining over the last 15 years. This decline is a symp-tom of deeper issues in the current membership model, which must be addressed to avoid further losses in membership and to preserve the critical mass that allows the organization to exist and attract new members.Implications: The Junior League must re-assess its membership model if it hopes tosustain its current membership and maintain a vibrant network of Leagues in thefuture.

Challenge 2: The Junior League does not have a model for community impact - The League’s membership model is not a model for direct or systemic impact: many Leagues are on focused short-term member satisfaction, and some members become frustrated when they cannot achieve the long-term community impact that they seek.Implications: Unless The Junior League realigns its model in pursuit of more targeted impact on members and communities, membership will continue to decline as women find other outlets for their time and efforts.

Challenge 3: Leagues do not fully leverage their greatest resource (members) - Leagues are not maximizing the value of their members—The Junior League’s membership categories do not align with capabilities or capacity, which leaves members feeling undervalued and prevents the Leagues from achieving their full potential.Implications: The Junior League’s rigid, apprentice-based membership model creates a self-perpetuating cycle: the Leagues fail to appropriately lever-age or invest in members’ talents, which reduces the Leagues’ impact; this in turn creates member dissatisfaction and contributes to resignation.

Challenge 4: The League’s model inhibits member networking - The League’s tenure-based membership trajectory has not resolved the issues of age-based membership: the current model is similarly hierarchical and diminishes opportunities for members to connect and learn from each other.Implications: Instead of defining and classifying women by hierarchical, outdated membership categories, the Leagues need to facilitate the self-organi-zation of members both within and across life stages.

Challenge 5: The League’s current model will not attract its future members - There is significant opportunity to grow The Junior League’s member-ship pipeline by recruiting Baby Boomers and Millennials; however, the linear trajectory of the League’s membership model may not be compelling or inclusive for these groups, given their expectations of continuous development and leadership opportunities.Implications: The Junior League is missing opportunities to invest in its future by not adapting to the interests and priorities of its future and potential members.

How does the typical member experience this model? The League’s membership structure (and to some extent, culture) remain challenging for the typical member as she strives to balance League and non-League priorities.Implications: Although age requirements are no longer the norm for most Leagues, future members will continue to face age-based challenges due to the current membership structure.

Recently, AJLI embarked on a truly ambitious effort. Their goal - - to capture our members’ 160,000 individual voices in celebration of The Ju-nior Leagues’ 108-year legacy of women building better communities - - is far from humble.

We’re starting now as we’re begun paving The Junior League Roadmap for the Future. As part of our internal communications outreach efforts, and our efforts to engage membership during

the Strategic Planning Process, we wanted to begin a conversation with members asking them how and why The Junior League provides value in their lives… “in their own voices”… to capture the spirit of what it means to be a Junior League member… to generate excitement about our roadmap to renewal and our future as women around the world as catalysts for lasting community change.

It’s better to give than receive….right? That is how I was raised, so that is what I thought when I first joined the Junior League of Wichita Falls a “mere” 16 years ago. I was asked to join the League at a point in my life when I had ample time to donate to the community, a community where I wanted to make a difference. I was young and full of enthusiasm. Look out Junior League, here I come! But actually, the one who would be doing most of the receiving was me! While over the course of the last decade and a half, I do feel as though I have helped the JLWF make a difference – but that difference was in me as well as the community. Through my many Junior League experiences I gained first hand knowledge of budgeting, special events, grant writing, donor relations, conflict management, community relations, strategic planning…and the list goes on and on. More lessons than I could have ever gained in a classroom. Lessons I took beyond the Junior League – out into that community where I had always wanted to make a difference. Through relationships that began in the Junior League I have had the pleasure of being asked to sit on and chair many nonprofit boards and committees, ones that are also making a difference.

When our children were younger, I stopped working outside of the home, and one day I received a phone call from a Sustaining member of the League. She asked me to submit my re-sume for a Marketing & Special Events position where she worked. I thanked her for her thinking of me but I told her I didn’t have any formal training in that area. Her response was “And exactly what do you think you having been doing in the Junior League?” Hmmm, I guess she was right. I did indeed submit my resume. I did take on that position - - and that position led to another oppor-tunity - - which led to yet another opportunity. Before I knew it, my professional life was one I had never imagined. A passion discov-ered through my years of “giving” to the Junior League.

What has the Junior League contributed to in my life? For me the right decision was made from the beginning when signing on to be a provisional. Here was an opportunity to grow as a person, to enjoy new experiences, and to be helpful to the community in which we live.

Initially there were concerns about my ability to contrib-ute to the League. Here I was sitting among some pretty amazing women with so many talents and abilities, but what an oppor-tunity this was being presented. It was a growing and learning experience beyond measure. Here was the chance to realize what dedication, hard work, and good planning could accomplish.

The door was opened for me to do things never dreamed of before. There was the frightening concept of having to speak in front of a room full of people, or even walking into a room with unfamiliar faces. Although speaking in front of a group will probably never be natural, at least it’s a fear that was con-quered, and now the faces are those of friends. The League pro-vided the opportunity to deal with the local business community. It provided the chance to explain to them what they can do with their resources, and how important their help is to the community of Wichita Falls.

Most important, from a personal point of view, the League has given me something more precious than words can express that of forming new and wonderful friends. What more could be said? In the coming year, as I step into the office of the President of the League, your support and guidance will be greatly appreciated. For me it’s all about being a member of a winning team that has contributed to my life beyond measure.

REMINDER......Do you know how important it is for you to pay your membership dues and to pay them before the established deadline?

Currently $63.00 of Actives and Provisionals and $43.00 of Sustaining member individual dues payments is directed to the JLWF. The remain-ing $35.00 per member is paid to AJLI. It is important for the deadline to be observed so that the League has your $35.00 when writing our check to AJLI.

easiest, pay by credit card, or by check.

According to the bylaws, annual dues for the following year (2010-2011) shall be payable by May 1. A member whose dues and other finan-cial obligations are not paid by the May 1 date will be notified by the Treasurer. Any member whose dues and other financial obligations are not made by May 31 shall then be automatically removed from membership without the opportu-nity of any hearing before or necessity for a vote by the Board of Directors.

Above and Beyond the Call Whitney Kirby

The outstanding contribution of this month’s Above and Beyond the Call winners has not gone unnoticed by their fellow League members. One member writes of our first winner, “She has been doing an AMAZING job with the pictures on the website! There are all kinds of neat slide shows and all of our profile pics. She has done an awesome job and has added so much to it. Also, with FallsFest she was awesome again with getting all of the signs and such taken care of. She is always there and willing to help with whatever the task may be.” Whitney, we thank you for capturing our League memories on camera and for going Above and Beyond the Call!

Our next winner, in addition to making a mean cup of coffee, brought her exceptional management skills to Kids Korner at FallsFest. She secured FallsFest sponsorship money from the Starbucks company, sold tickets at her store , and even had her Star-bucks managers from surrounding areas come and volunteer throughout the weekend. She has agreed to take the reins and Co-Chair FallsFest next year, but first there is the small task of co-chairing the area’s biggest and most anticipated garage sale—Attic Affair. Sarah, thank you for keeping us caffeinated and for going Above and Beyond the Call for the Junior League of Wichita Falls!

There are two deadlines approaching on March 1st that Active members need to keep on top of their minds: requesting sustaining membership status or resigning an active membership for the following year.

Wishing to go Sustaining:Sustaining members are those members who have fulfilled their Active membership requirements and who wish to continue to support their League and community. An Active member may request Sustaining membership when she attains the age of forty, with a minimum of three years of Active membership. Any member who has completed ten years of Active service in good standing may also become a Sustaining member. Any member wishing to request Sustaining status must do so in WRITING (an email is fine) to Julie Woolsey, Membership Vice-President by March 1st.

Resignations:Any member of the League who is not in arrears in dues or in the performance of League duties may resign in good standing for the following year. Resignations need to be in writing to Julie Woolsey, Membership Vice-President, by March 1st; otherwise, a member will be liable for dues for the coming year.

Important March 1st Deadline is Approaching

Kids in the Kitchen held two events at Campfire of North Texas in Novem-ber. The committee played a food pyramid game with the kids and introduced healthy snacks. The kids tried steamed edamame, apple and cheese sailboats, and made their own trail mix. The kids all said they had a great time and loved the new foods they tried. They were able to take home a bookmark, their own pyramid, and a chart to track their own food choices at home.

Strategic Plan’s Mid-Year Progress Last year many of you attended satellite meetings where you gave us some thought on things you felt the League needed. We listened to you and embedded many of the discussed topics into the Strategic Plan. And now, before you attend your next satellite

meeting, we want you to see what already has been accomplished as a result of your input, our enacted 2009-2010 strategic plan and hours of your hard work.

Community Impact• Laurie Welch, Research & Development Chair, SueAnn Altman, Community VP and Kathy Partridge, President-Elect worked together to conduct a membership survey regarding position statements. This was completed at the first general meeting in September. Check out the results on the League Forms section of our website under 2009-2010 Position Statement Research.• Our Committee Chairs have continually utilized Sustainers as trainers for their committees.• The first mini project during our general meetings occurred in November where backpacks were prepared for children at Sam Houston Elementary through the PowerPak 4 Kids program. Be watching for another opportunity in the spring!• League-related community organizations have been highlighted at each general membership meeting thus far including Big Brothers Big Sisters, Partners In Education and the Wichita Falls Area Food Bank.Training• Voices, a new feature of the League Connection, will increase member awareness of the value of training by featuring members’ past experiences in relation to how their League training has helped them in other areas of their lives.• Through the formalized training initiative, the Leadership Development Institute has been launched before scheduled council meetings to enhance personal and professional growth of all chairs as well as all members.Membership• The Job Description Manual is being utilized to set candid positional expectations for chairs, committee members, and for 2010-2011 initial placements requests are made.• The placemen team is working diligently on mentoring and sifting through research in order to make recommendations regarding updates to the placement/committee system.• The first annual Family Appreciation spaghetti feed in conjunction with First Christian Church was held prior to the October general meeting.• Five individual ladies and 1 committee have been given the Above & Beyond the Call Award for their outstanding commitment and have been featured in the League Connection as well as the general meeting slide show.• Twenty-seven ladies, ranging from Provisionals to Sustainers, have been featured in Caught in Community Collaboration for their involvement in the community beyond their League service.• Slideshows are being composed immediately following events and are being presented at general meetings and for public viewing on our website.• Communications Council personnel have utilized social networking media to tag members in pictures for other members and commu-nity to see.Financial Management• Renee Browning, Financial Advisor, is in the process of making recommendations regarding needed or updated financial polices before the end of the year.• Under the leadership of the FallsFest and Christmas Magic Co-Chairs, net income from these fall fundraisers have been maximized. We look forward to announcing the profits at the February and March general meetings.• The Memorial/Honorarium fund has been publicized through the League Connection and an individual mailer at Christmas to promote year-end giving.

Do you love morning coffee? Come join JLWF President, Paula Perkins and President-Elect, Kathy Partridge at a monthly “Coffee with the President.” Paula and Kathy most recently met with JLWF members at Atlanta Bread Company on January 14. It was a great time of fellowship and JLWF discussion.

More Than a Meeting The PIE Committee set up two assembly line tables of Pow-erPak 4 Kids food at the November general meeting to allow League members to have a hand in feeding the chronically hungry children at Sam Houston Elementary School. The food consisted of canned meat, fruit, cereal, pudding, granola bars, crackers, and shelf stable milk. Each League member helped pack at least one bag, and a few members just couldn’t stop and packed many more! These bags go home with children who have been identified as chronically hungry, meaning that they have little no access to food outside of school. Teachers identify the candidates and send forms home to the parents. Once the parents agree, the child is included in the PowerPak program and begins receiving a bag of food each Fri-day afternoon. The food sustains the child nutritionally until returning to school on Monday morning. The PowerPak 4 Kids program is a part of the Wichita Falls Area Food Bank’s outreach and is coordinated through the WFISD schools. The League has contributed money to the Food Bank to sponsor 20 children financially, and, as of the beginning of December, the PIE committee packs 108 bags each week for Sam Houston Elementary students. If you wish to participate in packing food bags again, please contact PIE Chair, Susie Tanner for details.

Developing Your Potential In The New YearThe Mission…As our Mission states, one of the purposes of the Junior League is to develop the potential of women by training you as a volunteer. It is what sets our organization apart from other volunteer organizations.

The Resources…The JLWF is blessed to have the amazing support of sustaining members who are continually willing to assist us in this fundamental part of our mission. When I personally reflect on each of my years of service to the JLWF, it is the relation-ships with my sustaining advisors each year that has most influenced, encouraged and taught me in my personal journey. These women have learned so much through their personal experiences as well as their formal trainings and are our most valuable resources as we follow in their very large footsteps. Many of our sustainers sit as advisors on councils, committees and fundraisers. They share their knowledge and give advice as we make decisions that affect our League today and for the future. Several of our sustainers have also stepped forward to provide us formal training in the Leadership Development Institute. During the fall, Nancy Marks, Joellen Tritton, and Christi Farnsworth all gave their talents to provide training in the areas of meeting facitliation, leadership principals, and basic financials. Everyone who embraced those training opportunities gained valuable new tools that indeed devel-oped their potential and, in turn, enable them to be a more productive volunteer.

The Opportunities…We encourage all of you to embrace the opportunities that will be provided to you this spring. The Leadership Develop-ment Institute will continue in conjunction with council night which is usually held on the third Tuesday of the month at 7:00 at the League Center. The topics for upcoming trainings this spring include fundraising and special event fundamentals, conflict resolution, public speaking and mentoring. If you are a member of a council, you are expected to attend as part of this responsibility. If you are not a council mem-ber, you are still invited and encouraged to join. The training sessions last approximately 30 minutes. All who attend are expected to follow appropriate meeting norms such as silencing cell phones and refraining from other work as we show respect to our presenters.
