An active member is a person who attends a combination of a minimum of three (3) NARC functions/meetings in the 12 month period preceding. An exemption can be granted to a member, who has previously been an active member of NARC for a period of five (5 )years. Members of the Historic Commercial Vehicles visited Clare recently, the weather was wet but everyone seemed to have a good time. On Saturday, morning tea and Rosemary’s Chocolate Cake was enjoyed at Goode’s workshop. We then headed to the miniature trains and museum by the Lake and viewed some interesting history. Luckily the rain stopped while we all had rides on the Trains. A Barbecue and salad lunch was served, the volunteers did a great job. Sunday’s plans went astray so they headed back to Graham’s for a Pizza Lunch. I look forward to meeting you all at the Presentation Lunch to be in Clare on Sunday 26th August. Moranne Coombs NEW MEMBERS NARC welcomes new members : Allan Ebsary from Pt Broughton. Jay Stoneman from Moonta. Jay has a TF Cortina and a Datsun 280 ZX

3 Past President’s Report 2011- 2012

When reflecting on the preceding year my first thought was “what have we done in that time?” A detailed look was surprising – much had been achieved. The Annual General Meeting in July saw all positions filled, and the subsequent committee meeting provided a comprehensive programme for the year ahead. August’s guest speaker, Don Springbett, shared some of his outback experiences, and left us with the impression that there were many more available if time had permitted. The annual presentation dinner at Port Hughes was a relaxed affair at an excellent venue, enjoyed by all. For September’s meeting (a member profile night) we took advantage of Cossi’s enforced rest to hear about his life and careers. The ensuing laughter highlighted Cossi’s approach to life in general and we were also privileged to gain an insight into Peter’s more serious side. The September NARC rally based at Burra ran smoothly, thanks to the valued input from the many members who helped put it together. Dave Simpson trumped it all, however, when we were unexpectedly shown his latest project when invited to Belinda’s famous morning tea. By way of a change, our guest speakers in October enlightened us about sustainable house building, describing their experiences with straw bale building and self-sufficiency. The Clare show brought out a good display of NARC vehicles and the next weekend a pleasing number of motor cycle and gardening enthusiasts gathered for a most enjoyable shed day in Clare. Thanks to the Model Engineers for our lunch venue and the train rides. A flying theme returned with our November guest speaker, when John Hillard shared his experiences when purchasing his Mooney aircraft in the USA and flying it solo home to Australia. Members attending December’s President’s Run were treated to a tour of Golden North’s ice cream factory before lunch at the North Laura Hotel. The ice cream samples were a hit. The traditional January film night nearly packed out the Blyth Cinema. This annual event provides a welcome chance to catch up with Kapunda chapter members. We were back at Clare in February for another Workshop Night, thanks to the generosity of the Goode family who make the venue available. The number of members who contributed and the large attendance on the night again confirmed the popularity of this format. March saw another NARC club entry in Power of the Past at Mt. Barker, with three team members again successful in winning trophies on the day. A large number of NARC members also attended over the weekend. Our monthly meeting featured film of the 2010 Transport Hall of Fame parade – trucks unlimited! Our annual Swap meet was again very successful with many helpers. We were well represented at the Booleroo Steam and Traction Rally, with a good selection of NARC vehicles shown on the day. Several members also presented vehicles at the Laura Folk Fair. April’s meeting was a film night and then a Port Pirie day saw members visiting the Nyrstar smelter and the RSL Museum. The day was ably organized and catered by Graham and Marie Burgess. A meeting with a difference in May gave an insight to the wealth of tools and supplies available from Wurth Australia, when Jim Puust introduced his job past and present. Thanks to Kip and Lyn Newbold, those attending the Victor Harbor “camp-out” long weekend were treated to several amazing visits, plus great hospitality and friendship. June’s identification night again produced many puzzled looks and conversations, and some short films to conclude. May I take this opportunity to sincerely thank all NARC members for their input to the programme, to Con-Rod and for their attendance at meetings and events. Particular thanks are due to Secretary Pat, Treasurer Merv, Con-Rod editors Dean and Sue, Historic Registrar Dave, Past President Graham and all other committee members. These are the people who help make NARC the successful, enjoyable club that it is. I am privileged to have been given the opportunity to be the name at the front for the past two years, and offer my ongoing support to the incoming committee. John Birrell

CLUB BBQ July 8th

There was much preparation for a BBQ day that would not be complete without inspecting a shed or three. Brian O’Loughlin volunteered and Gary Blutcher joined in. Together they also got Wayne Arthur to open a shed. Add to that a couple more Triumph Stag owners and it was all happening. Morning tea and a wander around Brian’s shed and somehow it was lunch time. Those attending brought a goodly supply of salads and meat. Catering was adequate to the point of:.. “I think we better have another BBQ soon to use it all”. Jean supplied pea and ham soup to begin with.

Page 9: The ‘CON-ROD’ - · PDF fileThe ‘CON-ROD’ 2. President’s Report 3. ... shown his latest project when invited to Belinda’s famous ... November 25th Regency Park Swap Meet

8 After lunch we went to visit Gary’s recently repaired and improved sheds. Gary’s wife Marion had prepared a notice and ribbon across the doorway while Gary was feasting. We therefore had to have an official “cutting of the ribbon ceremony”. Inside we found the woodworking shed all professionally laid out with racks for timber and a dust collection system on some quite enviable machines.

Lots of looking, drooling and talking and we moved on to “The Project” a 1935 Vauxhall six cylinder car which has started on its come-back trail. We talked knee action suspensions, brake rods, history, body shapes, seating etc. like we all knew everything until we tired of that and took in the memorabilia and wished we had the storage drawers that Gary fluked at a good price. Eventually we crossed the street to Wayne Arthur’s place, turned

to walk up a neat and tidy (gotta keep the wife happy) driveway to see a lengthy row of cars, trucks, Kombi and more. Then a right turn to a shed housing eleven vehicles VWs. Jaguar. Holden, Hillman, Torana etc. This was organized addiction or a serious collection Marion Blucher, Tony Lies and planning. It took a long while before everyone finished peering & Robert Stapley through windows checking interiors and looking down the sides of some good “straight” as we call them, cars. And so the day tapered off – we had our fill of fine food, fair – good – and very nice cars. Over 30 people out on a fine day, not far to travel, various groups chatting and eating. Quite a contented and appreciative bunch. Thank you all who helped.

KAPUNDA CHAPTER WEEKEND AT WAIKERIE JUNE 1st to 3rd

The May weekend away ended up being in June due to interrupted preparations and then available dates. Last year we fluked good weather at Victor in August, this year going east in June seemed and was, a safe bet weather wise. Those attending for the weekend were: Dale & Dianne - Jaguar MKV Robert & Ena - Simca Wagon Fred & Marlene - A95 Westminster Brian & Deanna - Ford Probe Peter & Raelene - Rover P6 Moranne Coombs - Modern Ross Vogt driving the MGB joined for the morning tea start at Palamountain’s, Eudunda, lunch at Morgan and the drive to Waikerie. Tony and Raelene joined us for morning tea also. The lunch at Morgan Bakery coincided with another group, making it a bit chaotic in a tiny space. Once served we ate in two groups. The event was planned as a no pressure relaxed weekend, getting to Waikerie with plenty of time to book in, unwind and rest before pre dinner nibbles and drinks. Dinner was

Page 10: The ‘CON-ROD’ - · PDF fileThe ‘CON-ROD’ 2. President’s Report 3. ... shown his latest project when invited to Belinda’s famous ... November 25th Regency Park Swap Meet

9 shared and we adequately fitted into one cabin. Evening activity was sharing experiences etc. with photos from the past. We all learnt a bit more about each other. Saturday we did the shops over before heading to Lock 2 for morning tea and to see construction work. Despite elaborate information about this work being observed at time of planning this run, the public was barred from entry in June. We altered out plans and had morning tea at the historic site “Dead Man’s Flat” a few kms back towards Waikerie.

Lunch was at Havenhand Chocolate Shop and Diner overlooking the parklands and river at

Waikerie. The afternoon was local sight seeing including the river bank houses, the view and an outdoor heritage museum at Ramco The Waikerie Club was the venue for Saturday evening meal. Sunday was pack up and drive to explore Blanchetown with lunch at the Hotel. You sure get a feed at that pub! The air was cool/cold on the deck, but with blinds rolled down and heaters on we were OK. From here we headed for home. Dale stopped to finally locate what the intermittent motor noise was – the water pump. All was still OK at Truro to continue home, but it died 5kms from home near Eudunda. RAA to the rescue. The fan belt was removed while I waited, making it a drive on – drive off trailer ride home to the workshop. Thanks for enthusiastic input in our sharing of life experiences and plenty of good humoured banter. All we need now is a volunteer to plan the next trip. Could we do a 5 day run.? Dale Palamountain

10 PADARC 14th Biennial Rally 9-11th June 2012 Early Friday morning an enthusiastic rally committee gathered at the clubrooms to prepare for the biggest and most important event on the PADARC calendar. Tasks including preparation of food stuffs, marking the parking areas of Princes Park, final checks of the PA System and a multitude of small chores were all finalized shortly after lunch. The weather was perfect and our optimism for a repeat of these conditions was very much on everyone's mind. A frosty Saturday morning assured us we were set for a wonderful weekend. Terry Dunning our head marshal, with deputy Jason Dangerfield and their assistants soon had vehicles rolling into the park and being allocated with class positions. 'Barney' Graham had the task of setting up the safety area for our stationary engine display and allocating entrant allotments for their engines. Assisting him was Adrian Patterson and Andrew Todd. This safety area is fenced off with interlocking steel gates which provide exceptional safety for our viewers. They were the brainchild of 'Barney' who welded and constructed these components for PADARC with some assistance from Colin Lang, who wasn't present to see them used for the first time. Family reasons saw Colin & Loraine travelling to the Northern Territory. Our catering personnel were again in top gear, Sandra Chappell, Gayle and Connie Dunning staffing the kitchen, Marlene McKay and Norma Greenfield, who also wear an apron most times were staffing the registration point. It certainly was all systems go. Tea and coffee, along with Sandra's biscuits were popular and available all day. The quantity of coffee consumed over the weekend would constitute a new record, but what can beat a hot drink in the middle of winter? President Andrew Todd, MC for Saturday called the entrants to the microphone area and welcomed all to our 14th biennial rally. The program was emphasized and Andrew called on the Patron, Pat Greenfield to declare the rally officially open. The Patron endorsed Andrew’s welcome and the opening was followed by afternoon tea in the club-room. Entrants joined members of the public who came in to inspect the vehicles with entrants voting on the different classes. The stationary engines chuffing away were a crowd pleaser drawing many favourable comments Following the afternoon's proceedings many entrants who were attending the 'Get To Know You' dinner dressed in something starting with the letter P. We had penguins in pairs, Popeye and his mate, Olive Oil, prisoners, pilots, plants, parcels, Miss Piggy, PADARC pageant queen, Pied Piper and a panda to name a few. Miss Piggy won the prize for best costume in the ladies section and the panda won for gents. PADARC's eldest member Joe Vander Lee showed up as a passion fruit vine. Prior to the rally Anne Ryan, who has been our pianist for many years suffered a partial stroke. Anne was as disappointed as we were, when she informed us of her inability to perform. We were fortunate to gain the service of Mrs Madge Vanstone, of Wandearah who did a great job filling in. We are happy to inform all who missed Anne that she is on the improve, and is playing the piano a little every day. During the evening prizes were handed out, thanks to the generosity of our sponsors, including PADARC member, Connie Dunning. Connie personally sponsors the lucky draws, with all entrants being winners.

Page 12: The ‘CON-ROD’ - · PDF fileThe ‘CON-ROD’ 2. President’s Report 3. ... shown his latest project when invited to Belinda’s famous ... November 25th Regency Park Swap Meet

11 A laugh or two were generated by two skits, performed by the rally committee members. The door prize was won by Carly Gehan from WVVCCC. Carly a junior member was excited when her number was called and hastily approached the microphone area. Poor Carly, she had a look of dismay on her face when Terry Dunning and Rian Chappell carried in an automobile door for her prize. Everyone had a laugh on Carly, but she appeared much happier when she received her real gift and the boys relieved her of the door. During the evening dancing and games were well received and we were honoured by the presence of Mayor, Brenton Vanstone ,who welcomed our visitors and gave credit to our club. Sunday morning and the frost gave way to another beautiful day. We expected it to be a degree or two cooler in Jamestown. The breeze was mean till 11:00 am, but from then on the day was superb. Morning tea was served when the entrants arrived and then non - vehicle events kept most amused. Following lunch, the motorkhana attracted many participants who were happy being involved, under the leadership of Paul Collins and assisted by Terry Dunning. After these events and with afternoon tea completed, the procession of historic vehicles headed home to Port Pirie. : The Port Pirie Cultural Centre was again the venue for our Presentation Dinner Dance. The drapes and fairly lights gave the evening an impressive aura. Past president and previous rally director, Rian Chappell acted as MC. The band 'Young Once' were minus guitarist / vocalist Graham Couzner who had just undergone surgery. Luckily there was someone available to step in, so the music played on. We are happy to report that Graham, a valued member of our club is well and on the mend. Best 1921-30 .. 1926 Oakland Rian set the festivities in owners Robert & Dawn Cunningham motion by requesting all PADARC members charge their glasses and join him in a toast to our visitors. This was followed by the band playing and members singing 'For They Are Jolly Good Fellows'. Rian stated, and it's very true that without them we would not be able to hold this function.

During the evening the prize for the best dressed couple, for the period of their vehicle, was taken out by Trevor and Lorraine Beythien from the CRCA, who wore attire to suit their 1936 Chrysler. The oldest combined age vehicle and entrant went to Barry Graham and his 1929 Ford Model A Tourer. The trophy no one really wants to win, for 'hard luck' was received by Alan Kohler from the AAA Club who had problems with his 1966 Pontiac.
