In our last newsletter we requested your feedback regarding our services. So, as part of our on-going commitment to providing the best homecare services to our clients and being an employer of choice for our caregivers, we have partnered with Home Care Pulse, a third-party company that gathers feedback and satisfaction ratings from caregivers and consumers all over the country by conducting brief, telephone surveys each month. As one of our caregivers or consumers, you might receive a phone call from Home Care Pulse. The call will be coming from 267-845-4183 so if you see that number on your caller I.D. please pick up and take the survey. In most cases, the call will only take about 5 minutes. They’ll ask you to rate your satisfaction in several categories on a 1-10 scale and to provide honest feedback which will help us understand how we can best serve you. It is important that you answer honestly so that we have the most accurate information. Home Care Pulse complies with all state and federal confidentiality laws and will not ask any personal, financial, or health information. Your feedback will be completely anonymous and will never be shared with anyone except JEVS Care at Home. Let your voice be heard. June is Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month – Ray’s Story!

Last year Ray’s family decided to take him to see the remake of Mary Poppins. Despite his protests that he had no desire to see Mary Poppins again, he absolutely loved it! So when Ray’s family decided to enroll him in the Music and Memory program through JEVS Care at Home, including the soundtrack from Mary Poppins in his playlist was a must have. While listening to the soundtrack the first time, Ray was immediately tapping his feet, singing along and smiling. He kept the music playing all day, even allowing it to play while he drifted off for a much needed nap.
For clients like Ray, who have been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease or Dementia, music can have a transformative effect on memory, mood and behaviors. Music influences the region of the brain that impacts our mood and houses our autobiographical memory. “Music and Memory” is an evidence-based, in-home music therapy program utilizing an iPod loaded with a customized playlist for each participant in the program. The program is designed specifically for people with memory disorders and is intended to move with the client from home, to places in the community and back home again. With a familiar playlist of music, a client can feel more comfortable and relaxed in unfamiliar environments, unlock memories associated with songs that they love and renew connections with their loved ones.
If you or your loved one would benefit from the therapeutic effects of the Music and Memory program, please contact our social worker, Lara, at 267-298-1657. In the end, you may find that it’s not only the participant who finds forgotten memories with the program. Banjo music on Ray’s playlist reminded his daughter of the times her own daughter used Rey’s banjo case as a stage, dancing to the music as her father played.

What started as a small gathering of activists 8 years ago at the Constitution Center in Center City Philadelphia has now grown in to a week-long family-friendly, totally accessible event. According to Vicki Landers, President of Disability Pride, “The long-term vision of Disability Pride is to engage as many agencies and community members as possible to celebrate and validate people with disabilities.”
Once again, JEVS Care at Home is a proud Silver sponsor and participant in the 8th Annual Philadelphia Disability
Pride Parade held this year on June 15th. This event culminates a week of family friendly activities kicking off June 10th with a flag raising ceremony at City Hall. At this year’s event, members of Philadelphia City Council will be joining the march in support of Disability Pride. Ms. Lander’s said, “There will always be a need for Disability Pride, by teaching about inclusion, we can all learn to live and love together”. JEVS Care at Home Gives Back
As part of our on-going commitment to give back to our communities, this month we have partnered with Project H.O.M.E.’s “The Hub of Hope” walk-in engagement center. We are collecting: Travel sized toiletries, Men’s and Women’s NEW underwear, NEW towels and washcloths, new or gently used cold weather clothing and books for adult readers. You can drop off your donations at our office at 9350 Ashton Rd, Suite 102, or call Ellen at 267-298-1638 for a pick up.
Summer is here, and for many of us, that means vacation time. If you are a caregiver planning on traveling with your loved one, here are some tips to make the experience a positive one for all involved:
Caregiver Corner: Tips for Traveling with Your Loved One
1. BE PREPARED: Planning ahead can help you manage some of the anxiety you have about traveling. Think about what time of day your loved one is at their best and plan to travel at that time. Plan your route so you arrive at your destination ahead of the time they usually struggle or need a break. Plan to make extra stops for breaks.
2. HAVE REALISTIC EXPECTATIONS: Driving straight through to your destination may be alright for you, but if your loved one naps or needs breaks you should consider that in your planning. It may take longer to get to your destination but it will be worth it when you arrive safely and without additional stress. Give yourself more time than you think you might need.
3. PLAN FOR AN EMERGENCY: It might not be fun to plan for an emergency, but it will make any unplanned experience much easier. Remember to pack a copy of their medication list, physician contact information, any pertinent medical history/documents, and a list of who to call in an emergency.
4. INVEST IN A SAFE RETURN BRACELT: Despite our best intentions, sometimes the unthinkable happens. If your loved one has dementia or other memory issues, a safe return bracelet can help ease your mind in the event your loved one wanders off.
5. REMEMBER YOUR CELL PHONE CHARGER: We often forget to pack this obvious item. Make sure your phone is fully charged before leaving home.
Always be sure to check with your loved one’s doctor before scheduling any time away to ensure that it is safe for them to take a trip. If not, you can depend on JEVS Care at Home to provide a reliable caregiver while you are away as your loved one remains safe at home.

Your skin is your body’s largest and most prominent organ. It’s essential that you take care of it, especially during the summertime, when UV levels can harm exposed skin. According to the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), one in five Americans will develop some form of skin cancer during their lifetime and the National Institute on Aging has pointed to sunlight as a major culprit of wrinkles, dryness, and age spots.
Prolonged ultraviolet exposure may also lead to cataracts, which affects more than 20 million Americans over age 40, reports the National Eye Institute. The best way to avoid this is to wear sunglasses.
Skincare Tips:1. Exfoliate to remove dead, dulling skin debris to prevent congestion and improve
hydration from toners and moisturizers.2. Keep skin hydrated
• Moisturize before and after your skin is exposed to the sun
• Apply a hydrating body cream to seal in moisture, and always shield freshly exfoliated skin with an SPF
3. Drink Plenty of Water• Higher temperatures and more time outdoors leads to internal dehydration, which
can result in headaches and dizzy spells
• Drink at least 8 glasses of plain water every day to maintain critical moisture balance of the body and skin and assist in detoxification
4. Apply Sunscreen • Always use sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher
• Re-apply every two hours and stay out of the midday sun from mid-morning to late afternoon whenever you can
5. Soothe over-exposed skin by applying soothing botanicals and cooling gels that can help prevent peeling and reduce redness and inflammation.
One blistering sunburn doubles your risk of melanoma -- remember to get a yearly skin exam by a doctor.
