Just a Thought - we seem to have been enjoying some warm and sunny weatheras the summer comes to an end and autumn approaches. In fact the first ofSeptember is officially the beginning of autumn. But instead of being gloomy aboutthe passing of summer perhaps we should try and look for the positives of thechanging seasons. After all if it was always summer we would soon get bored andcomplain about the weather always being the same. And autumn does bring manybenefits. Think of the beautiful colour of the autumn leaves, the ripening fruits, andthe harvest of the crops. Without the harvest we would have a very poor diet so wehave a lot to be thankful for and it is a time when many of our churches have aspecial service to offer thanks to God for his harvest gifts. In the Old Testament Godpromises Noah that; ’As long as the earth endures, seedtime and harvest, summerand winter, cold and heat will never cease.’ It is contrasts that make our life so muchricher and interesting so let’s remember that as the autumn arrives and thank Godfor the changing seasons.

LONELY? NEED A LISTENING EAR?NEED SOMEONE TO PRAY WITH YOU OR FOR YOU?Do you know of anyone in the village who would like a visit at home or inhospital? Would you like someone to visit you? Would you like someone topray with you or for you? Please call Doreen on '311122, Carolyn on'311090, Jane on'310518 or Sandra on'310383.

BOULES – Many thanks to all who supported this event and made it such a success.Once again the weather was kind and it was a keenly fought competition andeveryone enjoyed the afternoon, the barbecue and the cream teas and bar were alsovery popular. Over £300 was raised for the upkeep of our beautiful parish church soonce again very many thanks.

COFFEE AND COMPANYYou are invited to join us for coffee and biscuits on the first Thursday ofeach month at 19 The Link between 10.00 am and 11.30 am.Please come along and bring a friend.

BRIEF SUMMARY OF BENTLEY PARISH COUNCIL MEETINGThursday 1st September 2016

Nine council members attended the Parish Council meeting at Bentley VillageHall on Thursday 1 September, following a meeting of the Playing Field Society.Verbal reports were provided by County Councillor Gordon Jones and DistrictCouncillor John Hinton. Two planning applications for new dwellings and one for an extension to anexisting dwelling were discussed – all three applications were supported.Members also discussed a planning application for a change of use of agricul-tural buildings at Bentley Plants Ltd, to include retail sales and associatedstorage of shooting and fishing equipment, workshop and training facility withcar park. This proposal was strongly opposed and it was decided that amember of the Parish Council would attend the Planning Committee meetingon 7th September. (At the Babergh Planning Committee meeting the applica-tion was vigorously opposed by District Cllr John Hinton, the Parish Councillorand a resident, however, the development was granted permission by a voteof 9 to 5.)Concerns were raised and discussed over proposals to expand the boundaryof the Suffolk Coast & Heaths AONB, to include more of Bentley. The logic ofsome of the proposed boundaries was called into question. There were further discussions regarding traffic calming measures through thevillage. These included mobile and permanent, electronic speed warning signsand white picket fence gateways at the village boundaries.Progress regarding affordable housing needs in the village and potentialhousing association partners, Hastoe Housing Association Ltd., werediscussed. The next Parish Council meeting is scheduled for 7.30pm Thursday 6thOctober 2016.Andrew Graffham (Councillor)

Pause For Thought: I wonder if like me you enjoyed watching the Olympic andParalympic Games? As anthems were played and flags were raised above theathletes who stood upon the podiums, we were reminded that though they hadwon the victory personally they did so representing their country. This remindedme of the finished work of Jesus Christ. For by his life, death and resurrection hewon a great victory, but he did so representing others. By sharing in his victory wemay know our sins forgiven and live at peace with God eternally. With thankful-ness we must simply believe that what Christ has won, he won for us. For as theBible says, ‘…thanks be to God, who giveth us the victory through our Lord JesusChrist’. (1 Corinthians 15:57)

PET POEM FOR CHURCH PET SERVICE Pets are great, pets are good,

even the big ones that live in the wood. What do you call a pet?Is it the cats that climb or the dogs that whine? Is it the fishes that bubble or horses that get into trouble? The hamsters that spin, the chickens that peck,Or racing dogs that run neck and neck?Pets bring us joy, comfort and loveThey bring us signs, sent from up above!Pets make us happy and pets make us laugh,Even the ones that are a little bit daft.A place in our hearts, a smile on our face,Some walk slow and some walk at our pace.Pets are special and they are the best,Even the ones that are a bit of a pest!Pets are great, pets are good, even the big ones that live in the wood!Words written by Charlie Partridge

(Charlie wrote this poem for the recent PetService at St Marys Church, and we thought itwas so good that everyone would like to readit. - The Bugle Team.)

TUESDAY CLUBAt our second meeting in July, we welcomed Brian Piccolo, a self-taught andimmaculately suited Couturier, who gave  a most interesting talk about his life andwork, illustrated with a collection of his garments showing his exquisite  workmanship.Although now retired and residing in Spain, he still makes garments for family andfriends, his favourites being Bridal Gowns and Evening Wear.August saw a welcome return to the Club by Maria King, who entertained us with avariety of songs on her keyboard. This was followed later in the month by CharlieHaylock whose subject this time was `An Eccentric Look at Surnames`. A list of all themembers` surnames had been sent to him in advance and he was able to explain howthese had evolved over time and their meaning – a fascinating subject. We alsowelcomed a number of visitors to this meeting – potential new members???We had a full coach for our annual outing in September when we enjoyed a `Fish andChip` lunch at Dunwich, and on our return, a visit to the Wyevale Garden Centre atWoodbridge. The month concluded with a session of Chair Aerobics and a return visitby Bettacare Shoes. We commence our programme in October on Tuesday 4th with a Charity FashionShow by the Edinburgh Wool Shop in aid of the East Anglian Air Ambulance, and wetrust that this will be well supported. (tickets are just £3.00 and this includescoffee/tea/cake – in Bentley Village Hall at 2.30 p.m.)Dr. David Healey – subject The Wild Life of the Isles of Scilly -  with slides, is on the18th October. The meetings in November are on the 1st. – when Dick Leach will be talking aboutSome Stranger Aspects of Policing pre - 1999, which should prove both enlighteningand fascinating, and on the 15th  Jenny Gibbs will be making a return visit to the Club– talking on her life in Turkey.  Tuesday 29th November we will be celebrating withour Christmas Lunch at the Acorn Village,  Mistley. Please note that as from the1st November, our meetings will commence at 2.00 p.m. for the Winter months. As always, you are welcome to join us at any of our meetings,  and hopefully join ourfriendly Club.Margaret Blackmore Secretary (Tel:310655)

BENTLEY FAMILY FUN DAY 2016This year was our fourth Bentley Family Fun day and from the feedback received so fara wonderful day was had by all! I would like to take my hat off to all those who supportedthe day and made it again another success. The wind was a little daunting and I did feelfor the Orwell Astronomical Society with the lack of sun! However it did not rain! The main aims of the day are: to promote charities, their cause and help them to raisevital funds; to provide a fun day out for everybody whilst keeping the cost of the daydown for families; to provide opportunities for children (and adults!) to experience thingsthey might otherwise not normally. If anybody feels that they could offer their time orsuggestions to help make next year better still then I would welcome them.I would like to take this opportunity to say a big thank you to those kind people andorganisations who donated equipment for us to use on the day: Brian White Forage forthe straw bales; Nelson Potters Yard for posts; Tony Wright and his PA system; MrCooper and his fencing; Jay for the gazebo; Alan Cribb for the bins; Andrew Eagle forthe tractor rides; Billy Richmond for his skip lorry; Chassis Cab for their big lorry. Thosewho attended to the organising of the parking; and Armour Engineering who suppliedrope, fuel, generator, BBQ and power on the day.Thank you also for those kind donations of raffle prizes: Tattingstone Martial Arts; BJ's;Clark’s at Felixstowe; Day Lewis Pharmacy; Villapharm; Jimmy's Farm; Suffolk LeisurePark; Fox's Marina; The Red Lion; The Harvest Moon; The Hare and Hound; TheCarriers; Place for Plants; Baylam Rare Breads; Roger Balmer Design; Case is Altered;Bentley Riding School; Costa; Stonham Owl Sanctuary; Chassis Cab; The CuttingRoom; Capel Bakery; Nelson Potter Wood Yard; Suffolk Food Hall; Armour EngineeringLtd and local residents.I would like to say a huge thank you to anyone who I may have missed out!Jo Willis and Dave Telling

CONSTABLE COUNTRY MEDICAL PRACTICE – PRACTICE UPDATE SEPTEMBER 2016Helping the Practice to Help YouPressures on the NHS are reported on daily in the media; overspend, hospitalclosures, A&E waiting times etc. Your GP practice is a critical component of the NHSand increasing demand and pressure on funding affects us as well. We have finiteresources so therefore need to work as efficiently as possible. As we head intoautumn we know that demand will increase. We continually work to improve theefficiency the practice and you can help us by bearing in mind following guidelines:1. If you require repeat medication, let us know well in advance and allow 3 workingdays before collection.2. Nominate a pharmacy so that from November your prescriptions can be sentquickly and electronically to a pharmacy of your choice.3. Use your pharmacist. They can offer excellent advice and provide over thecounter medication which your GP cannot prescribe. If your pharmacist believes youneed to see a GP they will tell you.4. Use NHS Choices. The website contains extensive help on a wide range ofmedical conditions and offers advice on what you can do to help yourself and whenyou need to seek help from a GP.5. Tell our receptionist the nature of you problem. They may be able to resolve itwithout you having to come to the practice (e.g. medication issues) and they canadvise on the most appropriate clinician to see (GP, Nurse Practitioner, Nurse,Pharmacist etc.). Remember that we will never turn a patient away who needs tospeak to a doctor. If our on-the-day appointments are fully booked, one of ourdoctors will phone you back to discuss your problem and see you in person ifnecessary.6. Phone later in the day if you need test results. If a result is abnormal and or actionis required then you will be contacted by the practice. We don’t contact patientswhen no further action is required.7. Please bear with us! Some days are very busy, especially Mondays and Fridays. If you can’t get through on the phone then try later. You will always be able to speakto a doctor if necessary.Annual Flu ClinicsOur annual flu clinics will be on the following dates:East Bergholt Medical Centre: Tuesday 11th October, 2.00 pm to 7.00 pmCapel St Mary Surgery: Thursday 20th October, 2.00 pm to 7.00 pmAll eligible patients will receive a letter by the end of September inviting them toattend on one of the above days. Patients may attend either clinic, irrespective ofwhere they live, and no appointment is needed.Training DaysJust a reminder that the practice will be closed from 1.00 pm on the following datesfor staff training: 12th October (Wed); 17th November (Thurs); 14th December (Wed). On these afternoons the doors will be closed so please ensure any prescriptions arepicked up well beforehand. BENTLEY COMRADES

In August we watched a film documentary entitled Messages fromHome. This featured lost films of the British Army filmed at the point ofWWll between VE Day and VJ Day and recorded the voices and facesof what became known as the forgotten army who were still serving inthe Far East. The second film was from the Decisive Weapons series

and featured the successful role that the Harrier VTOL aircraft played in the FalklandsWar of 1982. The evening was completed with an episode of ‘Allo ‘Allo - Dinner with theGeneral. To remember the anniversary of the Battle of Britain in September we watched a filmabout the important part that the Polish Air Force played in the battle. The film recordedthe difficulties that were encountered and the bravery of the pilots who fought for Britain. The second film was from the series Above and Beyond and told the story of the partplayed by the Royal Navy and Army in the Falklands War. Finally we rounded off theevening with another popular episode of ‘Allo, ‘Allo – The Dreaded Circular Saw. Duringthe evening we made initial arrangements for Remembrance Sunday and a Christmaslunch meeting.Bentley Comrades is a gathering of ex-service personnel and those interested in theBritish Armed Forces. We usually meet on the first Wednesday of each month in theVillage Hall Committee Room, supply our own refreshments and each make a contribu-tion towards the hire of the hall. BENTLEY COMMUNITY STORES

After only two months of trading, Bentley Stores is fast becoming a central feature of thevillage.Bentley has been without its own shop for over 10 years, so this exciting new enterprise isproving to be a very welcome addition. The new store, which is conveniently positioned next to the Case is Altered pub, is one ofa growing number of community stores in Suffolk. Run by an enthusiastic and committedgroup of volunteers, the shop provides a warm welcome and a friendly, personal service. With emphasis on  local produce at competitive prices, the store stocks a surprisinglyextensive range of seasonal fruit and vegetables, milk,  eggs, cheeses, honey, breads, cakes and health foods, as well as newspapers and greetings cards.  Bentley Stores alsoprovides a dry cleaning and laundry service and a delivery and collection point for smallmail order parcels – a fantastic service if you’re not at home during the day.Bob Feltwell, the driving force behind the enterprise said "We are delighted with theresponse so far and we’re confident we are providing the local community with a variedselection of everyday provisions with some delicious treats thrown in for good measure.“We will be changing and expanding our range of products as we establish ourselves, soif there’s anything you’d like us to stock you only have to ask.”“I’d like to thank all those who have supported us thus far and would urge those whohaven’t had a chance to pop in yet, to give us a try, you won’t be disappointed.”If you’d like to volunteer, either to serve in the shop or to help with a variety of ‘backroom’tasks and you have a couple of hours a week to spare, please enquire at the shop or callus on 01473 310182.

CONSTABLE COUNTRY PATIENT PARTICIPATION GROUP (PPG)As previously reported, our first Public and Patient Engagement Meeting under theauspices of the PPG took place last month, on the topic of the Prevention ofDiabetes and its Complications. The feedback we have had from that meeting hasbeen very encouraging such that we firmly intend to hold further similar meetings ontopics of general health interest.  In response to the number of requests for ameeting on the Prevention of Heart Attacks and other related heart topics, we will beasking an eminent cardiologist to give the talk at our next meeting. More details ofthis event, which we intend to hold in Capel, will follow shortly.  A range of differenthealth related topics will be considered by the PPG for our subsequent events, butsuggestions from patients or from members of the public on topics they would like tosee covered – and to which they feel they would like to come – will be very welcome. Please use a comment card and drop it into one of our PPG comment boxes in thetwo waiting room areas, or let me or Kathy Pollard, PPG Chair or, indeed, anymember of the PPG, have your suggestions.  Do, please, continue to use thesecomment cards on any issue within the practice that you feel we should know about– good or not so good.  We pursue them all and our contact details are displayed inboth surgeries.A lot of the update article by Pete Keeble, the Practice Manager, this month refersto prescribing issues and the proper use of medicines is something which membersof the PPG strongly support. Nationally, a huge amount of money is spent on drugssupplied within the NHS, many of which are required on a long-term basis. Therepeat prescription facility is something we all need to give some thought to, as it iswell recognised that some of us tend to stock pile medication that we don’t reallyneed – yet. Just look inside your bathroom cabinet, or wherever you keep yourmedicines, and check that you really do need a routine repeat of everything that ison your repeat prescription request form this month. For all sorts of reasons, including (let’s be honest) occasionally forgetting to take the medication, or becauseof a variation in pack sizes,  you might find that you have more than enough of oneor more of your drugs to last you another four weeks, so you really don’t need toorder any more. And it does matter for a number of reasons why over-ordering ofmedicines is not a good idea: for example, they may go out-of-date, your doctor maychange your treatment, or you might unpredictably develop side effects. So it makesgood practical sense, for repeat prescriptions, only to order what you need for thefollowing four weeks and to submit or drop in your request form a clear 72 hoursbefore you need to receive, or to pick up, the dispensed medicines.Frank Wells - Vice Chair CCPPG - 01473 730101

The remaining Summer League fixtures have now been completed. After losing rather heavily at Bealings and Brantham, we gained a 5-5 draw at homeagainst Belstead, only losing the aggregate points by one shot. Our last home game was against Copdock where we played some excellent bowlsto record a 7-3 win. This left us travel to Belstead who knew only a ten nought winwould secure them the title. But we were able to win two mats although losing 4-6.This left Copdock as champions our congratulations to them. Thanks must go to all the players in particular those who filled in at short notice andalso to our Summer League Captains Deirdre and Pam and all those who helpedwith the smooth running of the matches. We now look forward to our new challenge of Winter League Division One startingin October.David Howe (Captain)

Village HistoryTHE BENTLEY MEN KILLED ON THE SOMME 100 YEARS AGO

Three of the 16 World War One named on the Village War Memorial died in this 1916bloodbath which left altogether one and a quarter million dead and wounded fromboth sides.Casualties were so many basically because of the use of advanced, highly destruc-tive weapons like the German Maxim 08 machine gun which, with a range of over amile, could fire 450 rounds per minute. Consequently the bodies of tens of thousandsof soldiers including the Bentley three were blown into unrecognisable pieces andlack known graves. The killing fields lay about 70 miles south-east of Boulogne, the battle front extendingonly about twenty miles between the River Somme (whose name, ironically, comesfrom a Celtic word meaning "tranquil") and a northern tributary, the Ancre. On 3rd July two days after the British Army had suffered 57,000 casualties, itshighest number in a single day, ARTHUR RICHARDSON (aged 27) was "killed inaction". He was a Private in the Suffolk Regiment's 4th Battalion. His name appearsalong with those of over 72,000 Britons and South Africans on the Thiepval Memorialto the Missing. In 1901 he was living in Hazel Shrub and later became a stockman. He left parents, in 1916 living on London Road, Copdock, and four adult siblings. On 13th September about half-way through the deadlocked battle and just beforethe first use of tanks, FREDERICK PEACOCK (34) "died of his wounds". TheThiepval Memorial also displays his name. He worked as a farm labourer beforeanswering Kitchener's call for volunteers and becoming a Private in the SuffolkRegiment's 9th Battalion. In 1915 his family were living on The Green (now the northend of Link Lane). He left a wife and eight children aged between only three monthsand 13 years.Soon after on 15th September SAMUEL SOUTHGATE (25) also "died of hiswounds". He'd been a Private in the Otago Regiment's 2nd Battalion and his nameappears on the New Zealand Caterpillar Valley Memorial. In 1901 and 1911 he wasliving, a farmer's third son, at Rookery Farm and in 1913 emigrated to New Zealand. He left a widowed mother, seven sisters and four brothers. Tragically in 1917 inBelgium, one of those brothers, John, was also killed. On 18th November, 1916, after just seven miles had been gained in four and halfmonths, British commander Haig ended the offensive.Another two years passed during which in 1917 America entered the War and sevenmore Bentley men were killed before on 11th November 1918 Germany was forcedto make peace.John Tombs - Village Historian

MAY WHITTLESEA MOORE (NEE CAVE)Keith Rees is researching the Cave family of 29 Abbey Road, Cambridge of the early1900’s, and possible former residents of Grove Cottage, Grove Lane, Bentley, by thename of Robert Moore and his wife May Whittlesea Cave. The grave photo he found on the internet, referenced St. Mary’s, indicating that MayWhittlesea Cave died 25th Feb 1977, and her husband Robert Moore died 5th Mar 1980.The other photo is one of a number that May Whittlesea Cave sent to her brotherArthur Cecil Cave in Australia, c1913 and during World War 1 years.May Whittlesea Cave married Robert Moore 6th Mar 1917, Cambridge, and he wasprobably a carpenter/joiner, who then joined the navy.Keith’s research suggests that their children may be: Robert Charles (1919 -1938);Kenneth (c.1922 Norfolk); Eveline (c.1925 Suffolk); Peter Roy (1926 Sussex - 2014Ipswich); Arthur John (c1931 Norfolk); and Dennis W.
