MARK 2:1-12 (NRSV)1When he returned to Capernaum after some days, it was reported that he was at home. 2So many gathered around that there was no longer room for them, not even in front of the door; and he was speaking the word to them. 3Then some people came, bringing to him a paralyzed man, carried by four of them. 4And when they could not bring him to Jesus because of the crowd, they removed the roof above him; and after having dug through it, they let down the mat on which the paralytic lay. 5When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, “Son, your sins are forgiven.” 6Now some of the scribes were sitting there, questioning in their hearts, 7“Why does this fellow speak in this way? It is blasphemy! Who can forgive sins but God alone?” 8At once Jesus perceived in his spirit that they were discussing these questions among themselves; and he said to them, “Why do you raise such questions in your hearts? 9Which is easier, to say to the paralytic, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Stand up and take your mat and walk’? 10But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”—he said to the

Minister: Mentors, what is your pleasure concerning these candidates for manhood?

Mentors: Pastor, Elders, Parents and Congregation, we give these candidates back to you in the same spirit of love that you gave them to us. We assure you that we have trained them in the ways they should go and affirm that they are ready to assume the responsibilities of manhood.

Minister: Elders, what is your pleasure?

Elders: Pastor, we have tested these candidates and have found them to be fit for the journey of manhood that lies ahead. We, therefore, affirm their movement from one clearly defined state of existence to the next.

Minister: Congregation, what is your pleasure?

Congregation: As people of faith who understand the need for men committed to Christ, Culture, and Community in the village, we affirm these candidates to be the new men they have become.

Minister: Parents, are you ready now to accept the fact that your sons have become men and to give them the respect and responsibilities that come with manhood?

Parents: We affirm that our sons have become men and will not hold back anything they have earned in accord with that status.

Minister: Candidates, hearing these affirmations made in the presence of God, do you now accept the identity and responsibilities of manhood that have been conferred upon you by your extended family?

Candidates: As we have put aside our childish ways, we accept the wisdom of our elders who have guided us into manhood and we pledge to demonstrate with our hearts, minds, souls, and bodies that we are now the new men you have recognized.

Guest Preacher BioREV. TYRONE MCGOWAN, JR.is the senior pastor of the historic Good Shepherd Lutheran Church of Robbins, Illinois and the National Field Director for the Rainbow PUSH Coalition.

He is a 2010 Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia. While at Morehouse, Rev. McGowan studied political science and served as the president and King Scholar of the Martin Luther King,

Jr. International Chapel. He is also a 2013 honors graduate of Yale Divinity School where he was the recipient of the prestigious Wolcott Calkins Prize for excellence in clear and vigorous public speaking. In March 2016, at the age of 28, he became one of the youngest inductees into the Martin Luther King, Jr. Board of Preachers at Morehouse College.

A minister with a social conscience, Rev. McGowan has served as a two-time United States Congressional intern and as a research assistant for the Institute on Religion and Democracy in Washington, D.C. In October 2009, he had the privilege of participating on a special CNN panel entitled Black Men in the Age of Obama. He has also been featured as a guest contributor on such programs as Up Front with Jesse Jackson, the Rainbow PUSH Saturday Morning Forum, the International Sunday School Broadcast, and the Another Perspectiveradio show with Dr. Leon Finney. In 2016, he was selected as a summer fellow to the Chautauqua Institution’s Interfaith New Clergy Program. Some of his writings on faith, politics, and culture have also been published in the African American Lectionary and in Reflections, a Yale University magazine.

REV. LASHONDRA STEPHENS serves as an Assistant Pastor at the Apostolic Church of God, and in addition to her Teaching and Preaching responsibilities, serves as director of the Ministerial Alliance. Having committed her life to Christ at age seven, she loves inspiring hope and sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ. She is a second-generation preacher who has been blessed to teach and preach God’s Word throughout the nation.

Rev. Stephens earned a Master of Divinity from McCormick Theological Seminary, where she was

awarded the Marshall Scott Urban/Labor Ministry Award. She holds a Master of Arts in English from Morgan State University and a Bachelor of Arts in English from Chicago State University. Rev. Stephens worked in production, promotions, and as an on-air talent in several areas of media including film, radio, TV, and social media. After serving as administrative support for the Illinois Institute of Technology, God redirected her path to evangelism and family ministry. Her ministry focus is to help cultivate the spiritual growth of the believer through biblical knowledge and understanding. With her love for God and the performing arts, she provides compassionate care to God’s people. Her ultimate goal is to “be an example of the believers in word, in life, in purity and in faith.” (1 Timothy 4:12).

Guest Preacher Bio

Rev. Dr. Michael Louis Pfleger is the pastor of The Faith Community of St. Sabina. He received a Bachelor of Arts in Theology from Loyola University, a Master of Divinity from the University of St. Mary of the Lake, and an honorary Doctor of Divinity from North Park Theological Seminary. He has also completed post-graduate studies at Mundelein College and the Catholic Theological Union.

As a minister, Father Pfleger has sought to break down the walls of racism and denominationalism by building unity among all people founded on truth and based on Jesus’ command to love one another. This holy calling has led him to be parent, a preacher, a teacher, a lecturer and an activist. However, he believes his most important role is an errand boy for Jesus!

Father Pfleger is the founder of the Employment Resource Center, the Ark Youth Center, Saint Sabina Social Service Center, Thea Bowman Spiritual Advance Center, Samaritan House for the homeless, Saint Sabina 80-unit Elders Village and the Beloved Community, Inc. He has been involved in many issues, such as, campaigns against the sale of drug paraphernalia, billboards that targeted children with alcohol and tobacco advertising and saturated communities of color; negative music glorifying violence and degradation of women; and the easy access to guns and the violence that is snatching the lives of children across the country.

Father Pfleger is the proud adoptive father of two sons, Lamar and Beronti. He was the foster father to Jarvis Franklin, who was tragically killed as a result of gang crossfire on May 30, 1998.
