It will be an evening to schmooze, get to know each other better, and relax. If you’ve not previously tried Koi Zen wines or don’t know a lot about wines at all, this will be your
enjoyable opportunity to learn, or learn more. However, you don’t have to be a wine-drinker, just come to enjoy the company and delicious food. (Sparkling water will be available as well.)
(Please do not use member discounts or pre-purchased drink cards, or other offers/discounts this evening; as this is an important fundraiser for Dor Hadash, and we would like to maximize donations earned.
Thank you for your understanding.)

GESHER PROGRAM Betsy Schneider, Director of Education and Engagement
GESHER MID-YEAR UPDATEHere we are in the middle of Dor Hadash's 36th (double chai) anniversary year and it is my hope that by now each

awesomeness that takes place in the Gesher classrooms. For the remainder of the school year, please attend every Sunday, as well as First Friday Shabbat evenings and our
final two Shabbat B'Yachad Gesher Saturdays. All dates are listed below. As always, my door, email, and phone are always available to you to share successes or concerns about your child or

During Dor Hadash’s MLK, Jr. Day in January, we were treated to a presentation by Jennifer Ott, a recycling specialist with the city of San Diego. She shared a very informative slide presentation and engaged folks in conversations about waste reduction and other environmental possibilities.
Going forward, each of us is encouraged to make a pledge to change something in our lives to help with the environmental crisis, even if it feels like a very small contribution.
To that end, Dor Hadash would like to encourage each of you to bring a cup, or mug, or even a plate and utensils with you to a future event and see how it feels. Unfortunately, we do not have space to store reusable items, but it could be a simple fix if we began the habit of bringing what we need for meals and other celebrations and then taking them home to wash and bring back to use again. The volunteers for the Safe Parking Program are moving from disposable plates and utensils to reusable, non-breakable plates as well. They are in need of another 40 non-breakable, reusable dinner plates. Please contact Giza Braun if you can help.
If you have other ideas on how Dor Hadash can be more eco-friendly, please share them with me. Let’s make a positive impact by doing a few small things differently in the name of social justice and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Todah rabah (thank you).
—Betsy Schneider

Coastal Roots Farm invites all local organization to their beautiful site in Encinitas for educational tours. Betsy was thrilled to arrange for our community to visit on Sunday, February 16 to learn, plant, harvest, and hike, while learning about all of the Jewish values infused in the processes at CRF. After the tour, we enjoyed our picnic lunches under some trees and then shopped at the “Pay What You Can Farm Stand.” There was a $150 fee for our participation, which was paid for out of the CDH Templin Fund. All donations to the Templin Fund allow us opportunities like this one. If you weren’t able to attend, we will take another trip to CRF in the future.

TIKKUN OLAM AT DOR HADASH
VOLUNTEERS STILL NEEDED FOR SPECIAL MITZVAH OPPORTUNITY For the last 22 years (since January 1998), Dor Hadash has been participating in the Youth Emergency Shelter
(previously Storefront—learn more HERE) program. San Diego churches, synagogues and other groups supply dinner meals year round for this emergency shelter for displaced, abandoned and runaway youth. The shelter supplies food, counseling and advocacy in an effort to return normalcy to the lives of these youth.
In the past, on the 31st of each month (that means Dor Hadash is responsible for only 7 meals a year) a havurah volunteered, as well as Gesher school parents, to provide and deliver the meal. We have only a couple of havurot able to continue this much appreciated mitzvah, so we are asking for volunteer families or individuals to participate.
Please contact Ros Goldstein for further details. Usually meals are purchased if time is a factor This is wonderful way for children and teens to visit the shelter and learn of the wonderful service they provide these teens.
Todah rabah to the The Dietz-Finucan Family (Jackie, James and Sophia) for providing the January 31 meal.
SAFE PARKING MITZVAH OPPORTUNITY
Todah rabah (l-r) Jeff Rabin, Giza Braun, Shari Ciancio, John Ciancio (not shown), Ellen Margolis, Naomi Jensen, Judy Hante, Betsy and Eli Schneider for volunteering on January 20 at the Safe Parking dinner.
The volunteers for the Safe Parking Program are moving from disposable plates and utensils to reusable, non-breakable plates as well. They are in need of another 40 dinner plates. Please contact Giza if you can help.
Help the homeless with other CDH members. Provide a homemade warm meal for families living in their cars in San
Diego. Volunteers are always needed and appreciated. For more information, contact Giza 619-701-1270, If you are having problems signing up, please contact Julie in the office (858) 268-3674.

Speak Up for a Foster Child! Voices for Children is a local San Diego nonprofi t which provides foster children with the caring support of a
volunteer Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA). In San Diego County, more than 5,000 children live in foster care each year. These children have been abused, abandoned, and neglected, and many of them feel very much alone until they meet their CASA volunteer. Our CASA volunteers are often the only consistent adult presence in a foster child’s life. You can learn more here or call Jackie at 858-598-2230.

ONE BOOK ONE CONGREGATION (OBOC)
We will be gathering on Sunday, March 22 at 1:00 p.m. at Richard and Bleema’s home in Del Mar to discuss Wandering Stars by Shalom Aleichem. Yiddish Theater lovers take note!
From Amazon: “The first complete translation of an epic love story by the creator of Tevye in Fiddler on the
Roof. Next year marks the 150th anniversary of the birth of the great Yiddish humorist Sholem
Aleichem as well as the 100th anniversary of the publication of Wandering Stars, his sprawling love story spanning ten years and two continents, and set in the colorful world of the Yiddish theater.
In a Russian shtetl at the end of the nineteenth century, Reisel, daughter of a poor cantor, and Leibel, son of a rich man, fall under the spell of a traveling Yiddish acting company. Together they run off to join the theater but quickly become separated. Reisel goes on to become Rosa Spivak, concert star, and Leibel becomes Leo Rafalesko, theatrical sensation. Kept apart by their own successes and by the managers who exploit their talent, they tour the world until their wanderings bring them both to New York. An engrossing romance, a great New York story, and an anthem for the theater, Wandering Stars is a long-lost literary classic, rediscovered here in a vibrant new translation.”
One Book, One Congregation Lending Library Readers of CDH's book group, One Book, One Congregation (OBOC), have donated their thoughtfully curated collections so that CDH friends may also enjoy them. Please stop by the offices at CDH to browse the shelves and borrow a book.
AMAZON There are two programs at Amazon to earn $$$ for Dor
Hadash. One is the Affiliate program and the other is smile.amazon.com.
The payback Dor Hadash receives through the Amazon Associates program is much greater than through smile.amazon.com. Qualifying purchases made through the amazon.com links on our website can result in a payback range of 4%–8.5% on total monthly purchases through our link. In contrast, shopping through smile.amazon.com and selecting San Diego Reconstructionist Congregation and Havurot–Dor Hadash as your qualifying charity, only 0.5% of qualifying purchases help to support Dor Hadash. That’s a big difference!
Bottom line—shopping amazon.com through the links on our website, a greater portion of your purchases help to support Dor Hadash—at no additional cost to you!
Please sign up for iGive.com. It is totally free. Sign up online and select Congregation Dor Hadash as your favorite charity.
Congregation Dor Hadash earns up to 26% of the cost of your purchase at each store. Many of these contributions may even be considered tax-deductible. CDH also earns a penny per search even if you don't buy anything.
iGive.com has the largest online network of shoppers, 1,000+ online stores, and free membership. You get access to free shipping deals, coupons, and great deals through the entire network of stores. Share your simcha, a birthday, an anniversary, etc., or dedicate the oneg in memory of a loved one.
The word “oneg” means “delight.” It refers to the wine, challah and snacks we share at the end of an Erev Shabbat service. As a sponsor/host, you are contributing to making Shabbat a pleasure for members and guests while honoring those you hold dear. You will also be given the honor of lighting the Shabbat candles.
Alef Host ($36) A basic oneg is provided: one large challah, wine and grape juice (for which blessings will be made), a choice of fruit
or cheese, and cups, plates, napkins, and utensils. We ask that you please be sure to pay for the sponsorship in advance of the date.
Bet Host ($54) A basic oneg is provided (see above) plus a dessert of your choice, along with cups, plates, napkins, and utensils. We
ask that you please be sure to pay for the sponsorship in advance of the date.
In preparation— Expect about 15–20 people on a typical Friday night. There may be more people if special programming is planned.
Regardless of which level of sponsorship you choose, all the items will be on the red cart in the CDH storage room. Please wheel the cart out, put on the tablecloths and set out the tables with the challah (a challah cloth cover is also provided), included food items, and any additional food (parve or dairy) you are providing. Pour the wine and juice into the 1-oz clear cups in the silver trays.
If you would like to supplement the above, we suggest you bring one or two of the following: a platter of fresh fruit, sliced cake, cookies, crackers and cheese, veggies and dip, or dried fruit and nuts. Dairy and parve foods only—no meat or shellfish.
Please arrive at least 20 minutes before the service begins to set up. Have your food on platters ready to serve. Plan on taking your leftovers home.
Before you leave— It is the host’s responsibility to be sure that everything is put away in the storage room: red cart with oneg and ritual
items (candlesticks, kiddush cup, etc.); book cart with siddurim; kippot and tallitot; Shabbat table. Please carefully package all items that can be reused the following week, and return all items that need to be refrigerated to the refrigerator in the storage room (grape juice, wine, cheese, etc.). Members and guests always pitch in to help with setup and cleanup.
If you have questions or concerns, please contact: Julie White at [email protected] or 858-268-3674 X101.

SHARE SHABBAT
What is Share Shabbat? It is an opportunity for Dor Hadash members to come together at a member’s home usually on a Friday night when there are no services at Dor Hadash. We try to find 2–3 hosts in different geographic locations for each date.
The rest of the 2020 dates for Share Shabbat are March 27; April 8 and/or 9 (Passover); May 22; and June 26. To sign up to host, click here. What should Share Shabbat look like? It could be a dinner (hosted or potluck); dessert only; game night; or even a service!
Check the shmeer and your email for opportunities to RSVP for an upcoming Share Shabbat in your neighborhood. If you have any questions about hosting a Share Shabbat, please contact Beth Even.
