Auditions for The Secret Garden will be held at Heberton Hall (next to the Keene Public Library); there are opportunities both on stage and backstage for students in Kindergarten through 12th grade. No prepared material is required; just dress comfortably for moving and sitting on the floor, and bring a snack to keep you going.

All children must register at the audition and be accompanied and supervised by a guardian. The first rehearsal for older students will begin following auditions.

*No charge for rehearsals or costuming. There is a ticket fee for those attending the performance.

Missoula Children’s Theatre - The Actor’s Tools (workshop)Wednesday, September 21 - 10am ■ FREE*

The basic tools of the actor’s trade - observation, memorization, concentration, and imagination - are presented and explored in an entertaining manner. Students participate in a variety of fun exercises, learning to apply the actor’s tools to performing and to everyday life.

Appropriate for grades: 3-5.

Apple Hill String Quartet Wednesday, January 11 - 9:30am, 10:45am & 12:45pm ■ FREE*

Always a big hit with schools, The Apple Hill String Quartet will return to the stage of The Colonial Theatre for a series of intimate lecture/demonstrations, performances where students have an opportunity to interact and ask questions with the musicians. And one student may be invited to join them onstage to perform with the quartet!

Appropriate for grades: all ages.

Curriculum connections: classical chamber music, music history, composition and rhythm, melody listening skills, communication through music.

The Color of JusticeWednesday, April 4 - 9:30am ■ $7.50

The Color of Justice tells the story of a courageous young girl and her battle for equal rights. It is also the story of America in the 1950s — a time of segregated restaurants and schools, separate restrooms and drinking fountains for “coloreds” and “whites.”

Families who have the courage to take their case all the way to the nation’s highest court challenge the segregation law in the landmark case Brown vs The Board of Education of Topeka, KS. The Color of Justice tells the story of The Carters, just such a family seeking justice for their eight year old daughter, Grace.

Appropriate for grades: 4 - 8.

Curriculum connections: communication and language arts, social studies, multi-cultural studies.

Doktor Kaboom!Thursday, April 26 - 9:30am ■ $8

Doktor Kaboom! is an interactive one-man science variety show creatively blending theatre with the wonders of scientific

exploration. Doktor Kaboom keeps his audience riveted with interest and rolling

with laughter while exploring scientific content that ties directly into

curriculum standards. Join him for a sidesplitting journey of

increasingly spectacular — and often successful — experiments a tour of modern scientific method.

Appropriate for grades: 4 - 8.

Curriculum connections: science, math, theatre.

John Hughes: African Kora, Jembe & SongWednesday, May 16 - 9:30am, 10:45am, 12:45pm ■ $5

John is an innovative composer, kora player, percussionist and vocalist whose style ranges from traditional west African rhythms and melodies to quirky and original hypnotic grooves that defy classification.

This intimate performance/demonstration, with audience joining the performer on stage, features ancient traditional African instruments not often heard in the United States, John takes his audience on an intimate tour of universal musical expressions of joy and hope, at once soothing and uplifting.

Appropriate for grades: 1-3 (10:45am performance), 4 - 6 (12:45pm performance), 7 - 12 (9:30am performance).

Curriculum connections: West African music, composition and rhythm, melody listening skills, communication through music, cultural studies, social studies, geography.

Young students use their imagination to transform a story into a play, learning the importance of focus, the development of character and the use of pantomime.

This original Missoula Children’s Theatre rendition is a joyful retelling of a story of hope and a celebration and all good things in life. Mistress Mary Quite Contrary embarks on a journey from India to her uncle’s home in England; along the way she makes friends with the hilarious Canadian Geese and the colorful Giant Bugs That Rock, and in time learns to appreciate everything around her, including the Moor Animals and the helpful Fireflies. Add to that a good healthy dose of caring, and what happens? The whole household begins to enjoy the return of health and happiness in a garden carefully tended...until it blossoms once more.

Knuffle Bunny: A Cautionary MusicalWednesday, November 30 - 9:30am & 11:30am ■ $8.50

Chock full of adventure, song, and gigantic dancing laundry, Knuffle Bunny: A Cautionary Musical tells a tale of firsts: a stuffed animal’s first trip in the laundry, a little girl’s first words, and a Daddy’s first time dealing with his child going “boneless.” Based on his beloved Caldecott Honor-winning picture book, Knuffle Bunny lovingly celebrates the heart and heartache that can only come from a family visit to the local laundromat (we mentioned the giant dancing laundry, right?).

The Acting Company bring their rich performance history and formidable talents to local audiences in what has been described

as a breezy, accessible, enjoyable performance of one of Shakespeare’s earliest - and perhaps most farcical - plays, The Comedy Of Errors.

The story of two sets of identical twins accidentally separated at birth involves a series of wild mishaps

based on mistaken identities leading to wrongful attacks, a near-seduction, an arrest and accusations of infidelity, theft,

madness and demonic possession.

Appropriate for grades: 7 - 12.

Kristallnacht Remembrance Wednesday, November 9 - 7:00pm ■ FREE* (RSVP required)

The Colonial Theatre is proud to partner with the Cohen Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies to co-present the Center’s annual Kristallnacht Remembrance. This remembrance brings the entire community together and enables participants to actively reflect upon the lessons of the Holocaust. This year’s remembrance will continue the theme of To Remember, To Create, To Live and will feature MoCo Arts dancers and the Keene State College Chamber Choir along with other community members and groups.

THE COLONIAL STUDENT MATINEE SERIESThe Colonial Student Matinee Series offers high- quality performances that complement school curriculum and illustrate the dynamic relationship between the performing arts and literature, history, science and world cultures. The series also includes events that introduce art forms outside the curriculum. An important resource for area educators, the Student Matinee Series brings quality performing arts experiences to an average of 8,000 school children from more than 120 schools each year, and more than 1,000 children who are home schooled. The Colonial Theatre also provides comprehensive study guides that teachers, students, and parents can use to help prepare and reflect upon the performances.

THE COLONIAL EDUCATIONAL WORKSHOPSThe Colonial’s workshop programs for students and educators inspire participants in a variety of ways. Students deepen their understanding of and engagement in literature, history, world cultures and performing arts through artist led workshops and lecture demonstrations. Post-performance and after school teacher workshops add to teaching strategies by exploring new techniques for using the performing arts to enrich curriculum.

• All school shows are general admission. All payments are non-refundable.

• Payment is due 30 days before the performance.• Schools may adjust number of tickets required

30 days prior to show. An increase is welcome, but subject to availability.

• You will not receive printed tickets in the mail; your seats will be held as a group reservation.

• In case of inclement weather, if the event is presented as scheduled we are contractually obligated to pay the performers. Therefore, we are unable to offer refunds or exchanges.

• A minimum of one chaperone for every 10 students is required. One free chaperone ticket is provided for every 10 paid tickets, and additional chaperone tickets may be purchased.

• Please let us know at least two weeks in advance if you require wheelchair seating, as availability is limited. The theatre bathrooms are wheelchair accessible.

• Adult Nametag Policy: For the security of all children attending these performances we ask that all adults affiliated with a school wear nametags identifying the adult’s name and school name. Please provide nametags for all teachers, chaperones and bus drivers attending the show.

• Buses: Buses may not load or unload from Main Street! This is a traffic and safety hazard. Buses may unload from Commercial Street alongside of theatre or in the parking lot behind the theatre. Please avoid blocking roadways.
