Dear Members
I write to you from from the lovely hill station of Tamilnadu...Kodaikanal, a summer sojourn for many Chennaities. This year the month of May has perhaps been one of the wettest consequently the lake is full, the whole place is lush green. The morning dawns with bright sunshine and then by mid morning ,the clouds take over hiding the sharp sun at this time of the year and of course the afternoon a downpour is assured. The earth smells of new life and the plants and trees sparkle in with the glow of the setting sun making the high clouds now turn to a yellow, orange and red as the sun finally sets and allow the night to takeover! It is in this picturesque setting that the the summer festival regatta will be held on the 26rh and the 27thth of May on the lake. No doubt some of you would also be here and take part in it.We would love to receive write ups from you for your magazine on your return for the June issue.
We have covered the regular topics in this issue on law, recipes, rowing, members achievements and fitness etc.,For the house magazine to be of interest to all we need your contributions and look forward to receiving them. How about sending in photos from your holidays School results would be out now and if your child or grandchild has won medals in studies or sports we would like to know.Wishing all the children and young persons success in their endeavours to achieve greater heights in the coming new academic year!
Looking forward to interacting with you at the club

The origins of ChiCken 65!
Did you know that the famed Chicken 65 has its origins in the Buhari Hotels of Chennai? It was introduced in the year 1965 at the famous Buhari Hotel on Mount Road. They continued the naming convention by offering Chicken 78, Chicken 82 and Chicken 90, introduced in 1978, 1982 and 1990 respectively.
Rohith Maradappa (a Dependent Member of Madras Boat Club) was recently named “Young Change Maker” and awarded a certificate by the International Olympic Committee. This is a big achievement as he happens to be the first Indian to get this honour. This certificate
was awarded to Rohith Maradapa by the President of International Olympic Committee Mr Thomas Bach.
He shall be mentoring the Indian team at the Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires, Argentina in October 2018.

It was my first Test match coverage for The Hindu,in Sept.1979 a year after I had joined .The first cricket match of the Australian series was to be
played in Chennai.
I got a chance to cover it along with my senior colleague and a legend in cricket photography, K.Narayana Chari.
Photographers were allotted the top or the last row in the pavilion terrace from where you could get a birds eye view of the ground. I was seated next to my senior with a 400MM Novaflex lens which had a pistol grip for focussing instead of the conventional focus ring and a Nikon FM camera which had to be wound manually after every frame.
The first day was dull and went in favor of the Australians. Having lost only 2 wickets and with a score of around 250 runs with Allan Border remaining unbeaten with a century to his name.
Day two went India`s way. Dilip Doshi a left arm spinner playing his first test ran through the Australian innings with a six wicket haul.
The first to depart was the Australian captain Kim Hughes
After long stints as a photographer for The Hindu and the Associated Press, D. Krishnan currently teaches at the Asian College of Journalism, conducts photography workshops across India, and is
exploring documentation photography.
who was caught by Venkatraghavan off Doshi.
Since a spinner was operating I tilted my camera a little to cover the bowling crease , a slip, wicketkeeper and other close-in fielders. If a fast bowler was bowling we had to straighten the camera to cover the batsmen and the 3 or 4 slip fielders and had to sacrifice the bowlers end.
It was one of those freakish dismissals in cricket. Yallop the new batsman, after a few minutes hit a ball straight back to Doshi the bowler. The ball hit Doshi’s hand and deflected on to the stumps dislodging the bails. Allan Border who was backing up for a run tried to get back literally on all fours, but was caught just an inch away and was declared run out. I clicked but did not know if I had got it right as those were the ‘film’ days and you had to wait for it to be developed. And moreover there used to be a split sec.time lag from the time you pressed the shutter release button to capturing the image in the focal plane shutters that the 35MM SLR cameras had.
My bosses ,the proprietors of The Hindu, all cricket enthusiasts were seated right in front of me and Mr.N.Ram turned back and asked if I had shot the picture. I nodded in the affirmative. I do not know if it was with confidence or the nervousness of a rookie trying to impress his boss that I had nodded in the affirmative.
I had to wait for another anguished, anxious and nervous 5 hours or more to know the result, as I had to stay put, concentrate, and cover the rest of the match, during which I shot another good picture of Venkatraghavan taking a brilliant catch in the slips of Whatmore off the bowling of Dilip Doshi.
Back in office later in the evening I developed my film and was elated to find that I had shot the photograph of Allan Border`s run out at the right moment. To make doubly sure, much against the rules for proper handling of wet films, I placed my magnifying glass over the negative and found that Border`s bat was just outside the black line ( White appears as black in the negative)
The photograph was carried on the front page the next day and I felt as if I had scored a century on my first appearance and the pride of beating a legend !

Long Hiatus
I walk into our hallowed club a couple of years back
attired in my rowing gear (if there is one) to try my hand
at rowing after a long sabbatical, though the same was
not applicable to the blessed watering hole, our club bar.
As I get to the water, I’m accosted by a new lascar who
quips, ‘Enna saar PUC yaa’ (are you a PUC), but to my
great relief, am recognized to be a rowing member, by
one of the older ones.
As I gingerly try to get into the ‘Sunny scull’ after what
seems eons, I’m numbed by a sudden tongue lashing
with a Texan drawl, ‘You caaan’t get in without passing
the swim test’ and am mortified to learn it is directed
towards me. The said person is a senior oarsman and
club color of Indian origin recently returned from the
US of A.
I’m at pains to explain to him that I have been a rowing
member for the past several years and that I was trying
to revisit the sport. Finally he grudgingly lets me get
into the boat, with a suspicious look despite assurances
from the old lascar ‘member daan saar.. It turned out
that the ‘Texan’ and I became very good friends later.
FresH start
As soon as I manage to get into one of the sunny sculls,
I was shocked at my rowing abilities or lack thereof and
the ensuing apprehension, that the narrow contraption
might capsize and embarrass me no end, more so due to
the ‘Texan’s’ constant instructions from ashore ‘Don't
skim the water with the blades, clear it’. Clear water?
Easier said than done. Those minutes before getting the
scull boat safely back to the raft is something I would
not venture to describe.
That's when I realized that I had completed my 300
outings, the required number in order to be confirmed
a member, all those years back, with total disregard to
technique or any understanding of the subtleties of the
sport.
I decided to start afresh and kicked off my love affair
with the sport with the ‘Maiden Scull’ (pun unintended),
a misnomer, as this category boat has such a wide body,
but more charitable than her narrow waisted sister, the
‘sunny scull’.
Eventually with enough time in the water, google
lessons and tips from one of our member/coaches, my
rowing abilities improved to the extent that I started
rowing one of the senior level scull boats.
Poetry in motion
Any able-bodied person, even ones inclined towards
outdoor sports visiting our club, given a choice between
rowing in our murky, smelly waters and spending time
in our newly done up bar, would have do well to choose
the latter, giving the former a wide berth, so to say,
unless the said person had been introduced to this great
sport in the proper manner.
In most other sports, one is forced to throw in the towel
at a particular age. In rowing you see men/women world
over go blithely on even past 80. One of our oldest
active rowing members and active oarsmen at 80 and
another at 67 are living examples.
This great sport is poetry in motion, available in our
backyard with a few excellent coaches; let’s strive to
make the most of it.

Young Couples & BeachesA match made in heaven!
The beaches of Chennai have always been a preferred choice
for young couples to hang out and enjoy each other’s company.
The beauty of the beach is that it is a leveler of sorts when it comes to couples. You can find all sorts of couples, bet it young or old, rich or poor, enjoying an evening out on the beach.
Come evening both at Marina and Bessy you see a whole lot to couples strolling hand in hand enjoying a carefree evening. The bajji, soup & ice-cream vendors too contribute to the couple’s enjoyment in their o w n w a y
by offering a variety of eating options at affordable prices. And then there is the compulsive selfie session for which the beach offers ample scope.
Today, it is one place they can hang out together without the fear of being judged or ridiculed. For apart from the beautiful, romantic setting offered by nature the beaches offer enough food and entertainment for a couple to have an enjoyable time together.
The couples of today have a relatively easier time hanging out. Not so long ago, our culture used to be a very rigid when it came to young couples, especially unmarried
ones. For
women, dating and seeing men before marriage was strictly condemned.
Thanks to an increasing exposure to western culture, our views have become progressive and is giving pathway for practices like dating to occur. Couples in earlier times had to resort to being by themselves in isolated places just because of lack of societal acceptance and old school mindset as people were not ready to accept this westernised tradition of couples dating.
Despite the fact that our society has progressed so much, we are still stuck at a crossroads between traditional mindsets and
progressive thinking. Even though progressive thinking is setting in the truth is there is still a lot of room for improvement. A recent example of The Ankit Saxena murder case in Noida which was a honour killing of a 23 year old Hindu boy by his muslim girlfriend’s family illustrates this point effectively. Even in our own Marina beach couples staying on in the beach after 9pm are invariable harassed by the policemen. This definitely takes away from the joy of a couple hanging out on the beach. Moral policing aside, beaches continue to provide a romantic haven for young couples a pause to discover one another in this fast paced hectic life.

May I

World Consumer Rights Day (WCRD) is celebrated throughout the world on 15th March. This is annual occasion for celebration and solidarity within the
international consumer movement. It marks the date in 1962 when US President John F. Kennedy, in his address to the US Congress outlined his vision of consumer rights.
It is an awareness day and theme for this year's WCRD 2018 is ‘Making Digital Marketplaces Fairer’.
In India the National Consumer Day is observed on 24th December. The theme for the year 2017-18 is “Emerging Digital Market - Issues and Challenges in Consumer Protection”
The Consumer Protection Act of 1986 was enacted with an objective to provide better protection of the interests of the Consumers and to make provision for the establishment of Consumer Councils and other authorities for the settlement of consumer disputes. This was indeed a unique and highly progressive piece of Social Welfare Legislation. The provisions of this Act are intended to provide effective and efficient safeguards to the consumers against various types of exploitations and unfair dealings. Unlike other laws, which are basically punitive or preventive in nature, the provisions of the Act are compensatory. Ever since its implementation,
the Act has undergone changes through amendments only to further strengthen, redefine and protect Consumer Rights leading up to the current Consumer Protection Bill, 2017.
The Consumer Protection Bill, 2017 seeks to protect the rights of consumers by strengthening consumer protection mechanism. The new law will replace the current Consumer Protection Act, 1986. The Bill was introduced in the Lok Sabha at the start of the winter session and was passed and it now awaits the nod from the Rajya Sabha before becoming implementable law.
News Rooms in TV Channels, Daily News Papers and the Internet are abuzz with discussions on its pros and cons making it the “current topic of discussion”.
All of us are consumers in our daily lives. Brands vie against each other for that top of mind recall in the minds of the consumer. An efficient and effective program of Consumer Protection is of special significance to all of us because we all are consumers.
Advertisements are targeted at consumers for gaining attention, informing, comparing, persuading and reminding them of the product or service advertised. Consumers are pounded with advertisements everyday on TV, cinemas, newspapers, magazines, internet and mobile devices.

Naresh VassudhevRN 003
After retiring from the corporate world, Naresh is practicing as an Advocate in Chennai
Advertisements carry endorsements by actors, sportspersons, musicians and other professionals who can directly or indirectly influence consumer behavior, many a time leading us to make an influenced decision and not so much an informed decision. Such an environment, many a time, gives rise to deficiencies in Goods or Service in the hands of the consumer thereby necessitating an effective legal mechanism to resolve consumer disputes.
The focus is on consumer rights, consumer empowerment and misleading advertisements.
As a dissatisfied customer, I am sure you have many a time accosted the seller of goods or service saying – I’ll drag you to consumer court” and after actually doing so, you sincerely wished you hadn’t.
A quick read of the Bill gives me the impression that it gives the consumer a strong legal backing. With e-commerce and new tax reforms already making headway in the commercial space, the Bill seeks to overhaul protection of consumer rights while driving the economy towards a buyers’ market.
The Bill brings all online transactions (e-commerce industry) under its ambit. A dissatisfied e-commerce consumer can file a complaint in the court located in the city/district of his residence either electronically or in person.
The Bill takes into consideration consumer rights and prescribes graded punishment for manufacturers, sellers and service providers for deficiency in Goods Sold or Services Rendered.
The Bill seeks to build a framework defining “unfair terms of a contract” lending greater scope to contract law.
The Bill makes way for the setting up of a Central Consumer Protection Authority whose task is to promote, protect and enforce the rights of consumers and make interventions when necessary to prevent consumer detriment arising out of unfair trade practice and initiating class-action suits (suits by a group of consumers with similar complaints).
Some of the other interesting aspects covered by the Bill are:
False or misleading advertisements by service provider or
manufacturer, if proved, will lead to a 2-year imprisonment and/or fine up to Rs.10,00,000/- or both for first time offenders. Every subsequent offence will be punishable with imprisonment up to 5-years and/or fine of up to Rs.50,00,000/-. More importantly celebrities who endorse products could be prosecuted with fine if the products have misleading claims. This is definitely a GREY AREA and is a point to ponder.
The Bill has introduced a “product liability” clause fixing the liability on the manufacturer for personal injury, death or damage to property caused to the consumer as a result of manufacturing defect, defects in construction, design, formula, preparation, assembly, etc.
The Bill proposes the reference of a dispute by a consumer disputes resolution forum to “mediation” as an alternative dispute resolution mechanism, if it feels that there exists an element of settlement between the parties.
Complaints can be filed electronically and disputes are to be settled by the forum within 21 days. If not settled, the complaint will be deemed to have been accepted.
And with a view to preventing frivolous and vexatious suits being filed the new Bill seeks to penalize any such complaint with a fine of up to Rs.50,000/-.
So, consumers, the Bill is due to be passed by the Rajya Sabha – let it sink in and use your rights diligently. And all the Manufacturers and Service Providers out there - it is about time you conduct a Gap Audit of your goods and services – Actual vs Expectation; Actual vs Regulatory Norms and Actual vs Your Stated Claims. If there is no gap – congratulations, you have a smooth sail ahead. But if you do find gaps, it will be in order to very quickly call for an “all hands meet” to form a “task force” to assess the gap, formulate a closure plan and implement the plan to close the gaps. Good Luck!
This is the fourth in the series of discussions starting with the January 2018 issue. Do read the previous columns too if you haven’t already. I will be glad to answer questions.
Have a great summer vacation.

A couple going on vacation but his wife was on a business trip so he went to the destination first and his wife would meet him the next day.
When he reached his hotel, he decided to send his wife a quick email.
Unfortunately, when typing her address, he mistyped a letter and his note was directed instead to an elderly preacher’s wife whose husband had passed away only the day before.
When the grieving widow checked her email, she took one look at the monitor, let out a piercing scream, and fell to the floor in a dead faint.
At the sound, her family rushed into the room and saw this note on the screen:
