ABOUT THE SURVEY

The Class of 2016 Student Survey Report, the 10th in this series of reports first published in 2007, details the attitudes, behaviors, and outcomes of graduating seniors. Key areas of focus include the historical and present landscape of the college hiring market, students’ success in the job search, their internship/co-op experience, how they search for jobs and prepare to enter the work force, and their preferences and expectations. In addition, this year’s report includes results related to student perceptions of their career readiness.

Through NACE’s college members, this survey collected viable data from 23,282 college students across all degree and year levels; the focus of this report is the 5,601 bachelor’s degree students who indicated that they would be graduating—or already had graduated—during the 2015-16 academic school year (July 1, 2015, through June 30, 2016), and were thus members of the Class of 2016. Data collection took place from February 16, 2016, to April 30, 2016.

In framing the information presented in this report, it is important to note these data represent a “snapshot” of the months prior to graduation, and therefore may not necessarily represent students’ outcomes in the months following graduation.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

2 | Class of 2016 Student Survey Report | National Association of Colleges and Employers

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

• After climbing back from the recession over the past several years, the job market for new college graduates hit something of a plateau with the Class of 2016. Overall, just over 46 percent of 2016 graduates received a job offer before graduation, down from 51 percent from the Class of 2015.

• Among Class of 2016 bachelor’s degree graduates, 68.5 percent expect to enter the work force, while 25 percent anticipate going on to graduate school.

• Overall, 60 percent of those who expect to enter the work force immediately are drawn to private-sector employment.

• Major, and, to a lesser extent, gender, race/ethnicity, and GPA had an effect on post-graduation plans.

• Graduates who plan to enter the work force immediately after graduation expressed a preference for employers/jobs that provide opportunity for personal growth, friendly co-workers, job security, and a good benefits package.

• According to responding students, a good benefits package includes a company-matched 401(k), dental and employer-paid health insurance, and guaranteed annual salary increases.

• Class of 2016 graduates consider themselves “career ready.” Overall, more than 85 percent deem themselves very or extremely proficient in terms of professionalism/work ethic, teamwork, and critical thinking, and approximately three-quarters feel the same about their oral/written communication skills and leadership abilities. More than half believe they are very or extremely proficient in career management. They are least sure about their competency in IT applications.

• Employer websites are the most widely used job-search resource, and the resource rated as most useful by students.

• Students were most likely to use the career center for resume assistance, and also rated this service as the center’s most useful. Practice interviewing, although used by fewer respondents, was a close second in terms of usefulness.

• Approximately 52 percent of students said they were very or extremely comfortable being contacted by an employer through social media; far fewer—25 percent—said they were very or extremely comfortable in initiating contact with an employer this way.

• More than 86 percent of students reported using LinkedIn in their job search; approximately 59 percent see the platform as very or extremely useful in the job search.

• More than 56 percent of graduating seniors reported taking part in at least one internship. Of those, 56 percent were paid, while 44 percent were unpaid.

• The majority of those in paid internships did not receive course credit for their experience; among those who were in unpaid internships, 72 percent earned credit.

• A paid internship with a for-profit employer boosted a graduate’s chances of getting a job offer and provided a higher starting salary when compared to the class overall. More than 52 percent of paid interns at for-profits received a job offer (compared to 46 percent of the class overall), with a median starting salary of $51,251 (compared to $47,358).

• Overall, 2016 graduates’ salary expectations were in line with the actual offers they received. The median starting salary expectation was $42,183; the actual median salary offer was $47,358.
