Dr William Curtis Bailey was born on February 2, 1851

and died October 21, 1929. He

was a member of the Central

New York Medical Society. On

January 15, 1891 the Buffalo Weekly Express published an

article about Dr. Bailey being the operator of one of the most

notable experiments that was ever made in the city of Buffalo,

NY. At Buffalo General Hospital, Dr. Roswell Park invited all

the members of the local medical profession to witness Dr. Bai-

ley perform an operation on six Tuberculosis patients, this was

done after he spent two months with Professor Koch in his la-

boratory in Europe. Professor Koch was in charge of manufac-

turing the injection to treat patients with symptoms of Tubercu-

2019 Program Schedule

Learn about the “Cathedral Barns” Clarendon Historical Society invites you to join us on Wednesday, May 15, 2019 at 7:00 PM when Katie Andres, Barbara Chapman and Dick Thomas will present The Barn Building Legacy of J. T. Wells and Sons. John Talcott Wells, a native of Wheatland, NY patented an inno-vative arched truss system in 1899 despite having no training as an archi-tect. He, and later his sons, constructed soaring cathedral like barns with open, uncluttered interior spaces. This innovative design made the entire barn floor free from obstructions, increasing the efficiency of the farmer. Over 200 barns were constructed, most within Monroe County. Sadly, today, fewer than 50 survive. In addition to building barns, Wells de-signed auditoriums erected at Silver Lake in Wyoming County and on Staten Island. His sons took over his business when he retired in 1914 and continued to build Wells barns until 1942. Katie Andres is an edu-cator and television producer who first fell in love with Wells Barns while working at the Avon Century Barn, which is used as a wedding venue. Her quest for information led her to our other two presenters. Barbara Chapman, also an educator, is the Wheatland Town Historian and has researched the Wells family in that role. Dick Thomas is a professional photographer specializing in natural and rural heritage landscapes. Forming the Wells Barn Legacy Project, they seek to document these barns and educate the public about them, in hopes of encouraging the preservation of the remarkable structures. The program will take place at the Clarendon Historical Society which is located at 16426 Fourth Section Road, Holley, NY at the intersection of Route 31A and Church Street in Clarendon. The presentation is free and open to the public. Light re-freshments will be served.

The Museum will be open from 5:00-7:00 PM on the days we have

programming (the 3rd Wed of the month beginning in April and going

through October.) For more information call 585-638-6371 ext. 104.

TID BITS Geary (Moose) Shenck

THIS MONTH’S RIDDLES:

1. What would you get if you put a light bulb in a suit of armor? 2. What pen does a baby write with? 3. What sign do you put on the top of a moron’s ladder? 4. Why did the man cross a hyena with a parrot? 5. Why should you never date tennis players? Here’s a recipe for all of us:

Take two heaping cups of patience,

one heart full of love,

two handfuls of kindness,

combine with gentleness,

Blend together with joy and peace,

sprinkle generously with goodness

and plenty of faithfulness and mix well.

Spread over a period of a lifetime

and serve to everyone you meet.

That’s it for now. Have a great month.

Adios and God Bless.

Geary ‘Moose’ Shenck

Greetings to all you intelligent readers of the Gazette. Here we go again. Hope you all enjoy at least a little of what follows. The same bike tries to run me down every single day. Sounds like a vicious cy-cle, doesn’t it? Ironically I’m watching an exercise commercial be-cause I’m too lazy to get the remote. Office boy to boss: Please sir, I think you’re wanted on the phone. Boss: You think? What’s the good of thinking? Boy: Well sir, the voice on the other end said, Hello, is that you, you idiot? Pat was walking home from the pub, a little under the weather, one foot on the curb the other in the gutter. The good Padre came along and seeing Pat says, “Pat, you’re drunk.” Pat says, “That’s good. I thought I was a cripple.” Sue: Your new overcoat is pretty loud isn’t it? Tom: Yeah, but I’m going to buy a muffler to go with it. A new secretary was asked, “How do you like your new boss?” Linda said, “Oh, he ain’t so bad only he’s kinda bigoted.” What do you mean bigoted?” “Well he thinks words can only be spelled one way.” Teacher: Name three collective nouns. Greg: Fly paper, wastebasket, and vacuum cleaner. Teacher: (Pointing to a deer in the zoo), John-ny, what is that? Johnny: I don’t know. Teacher: What does your mother call your father? Johnny: Don’t tell me that’s a louse. The pupil was asked to paraphrase the sentence: He was bent on seeing her. He wrote: The sight of her doubled him up. Remember, a gracious word may smooth the way, a joyous word will light the day, a peaceful word will lessen stress, a loving word will heal and bless. Debbie: How is it going at the gym? Rachel: Not so good. I sat on the rowing machine and it sank. Tom: I heard that somebody stole your antide-pressants. Ed: Yes and I hope he’s happy.

A bunch of germs were hitting it up in a bronchial saloon. Two bugs on the edge of the larynx were jazzing it up with a hay feverish tune. While back of the teeth in a solo game sat dangerous Dan Kerchoo. And watching his pulse was his queen of the waltz, the lady that’s known as the flu. A Dr. Robert McMillon wrote some good advice: Thou shalt not try to be a champion athlete after age fifty. Thou shalt consider losing thy temper a luxury to be indulged in sparingly. Thou shalt avoid worry – the government probably will take care of thee. After a certain age thou shalt keep thy alcoholic intake below the point where it may delude thee into thinking thou art a better man than thou ever were.

The news circulated that a well known landlady had run away with her star boarder, but it turned out to be a roomer. After this winter I thought this, by Aarno Davidson, was ap-propriate – Spring forever appears, the soothing music part of lyrics unspoken, it thaws the frozen fears, mends the wounded heart and winter has broken. Some looney laws: New Hampshire law says that when two cars meet at an intersection, each must wait for the other to pass. In Oregon, a dead juror may not serve on a jury. In South Foster, Rhode Island, any dentist who extracts the wrong tooth must have a similar tooth pulled by the village blacksmith. Pictionary: Subdued – a guy who works in a submarine. Spice – the plural of spouse. Bernadette – the act of burning a mortgage. Deranges – where the buffalo roam. Dilate – reaching old age. The first guy who heard a parrot talk was probably not ok for several days. After taking a handful of ashes and scat-tering them all over the floor and tearing up a newspaper into little bits and flinging them around, a salesman who was demonstrating vacuum cleaners turned to the lady of the house who was watching in silence and said, “You’re going to be surprised how quickly I clean this up. Now where can I plug this in?” “You’re going to be surprised,” remarked the lady, “We have no electricity.” They say the best exercise for reducing is just move your head slowly from right to left when asked to have a second helping. Bookkeeper: I’ll need to have a raise, sir. There are three other companies after me. Employer: Is that so? What companies? Bookkeeper: Light, phone and gas. A professor was asked, “How many students in your class?” He said, “About one in five.”

CLARENDON TOWN BOARD - Meeting Highlights March 2019

In absence of Supervisor Richard Moy, Deputy Supervisor Allen Robin-son presided over the April meeting. The Town Board scheduled a workshop meeting with Attorney John Sansone to review Zoning Ordi-nance Amendments; International Property Maintenance Code-Outside storage of junk materials (LL 1 of 2015) and Subdivision Regulations (LL 1 of 2005). The workshop meeting is to be held on May 16, 2019 at 7:00 PM at the Town Hall. HIGHWAY/WATER DEPARTMENT REPORT – Superintendent Larry Swanger reported that water readings for the first quarter of 2019 are complete and bills have gone out. The highway crew has been fixing pot holes when the weather allows and more plowing and salting was done this past month. Most of the gravel roads in town have been graded and winter equipment is being main-tained and painted for summer storage. Highway employees have attended training at the county and will attend new required training on the 24th to operate an excavator. There was one burial at Hillside Cem-etery and some of the lawns have been cleaned up from winter plow-ing. The State has removed the extreme weather money/aid from the budget; the town will lose $20,000 because of that. Suburban Electric repaired wiring in the water pit at the Barre/Clarendon connection. The water reading on the vacant house at 15650 East Lee Road has had a zero usage reading all winter; this reading showed ½ million gallons of water used. Superintendent Swanger has turned off the water to that service. Jamie Mathes is working at the Hillside Cemetery now. Four tires were found in the back of the cemetery; they have been removed as has nine bags of plastic buckets, wreaths, etc. PLANNING BOARD REPORT – Chairman David Griggs submitted the following written report: 03-26-2019 (Regular Meeting) SD 19-03 -The Planning Board held a pre-conference for a site plan review for the construction of a 24’ by 32’ pole barn, Steve Johnson, 16885 Jackson Road. No significant issues were noted with the proposal. Applicant requested to waive the pre-conference and move to a formal. A motion was made, seconded and approved to waive the pre-conference. A motion was made, seconded and approved to approve the site plan contingent on OIO verification of setbacks. 04-09-2019 (Regular meeting) - Meeting cancelled due to insufficient agenda items. SUPERVISOR REPORT – Deputy Supervisor Allen Robinson reported that the Program at the Historical Society this month is on English Barns; at the Museum Barn, begins at 7:00 PM. Deputy Supervisor Robinson reported that NYS Agriculture & Markets completed the Dog Control Officer Inspection Report and the Municipal Shelter Inspection Report on April 2, 2019. Both were rated Satisfactory. A check was received from New York State for Snow & Ice in the amount of $29,414.37 and Assembly Minor-ity Leader Brian Kolb responded to the Town Board resolutions adopt-ed in March that he supports the initiatives. CORRESPONDENCE The Town of Murray has sent notice of their April 9th public hearing regarding special events at farms & wineries. Notice has been re-ceived from Retired Public Employees Association regarding pre-retirement seminar. NYS Assemblyman Steven Hawley responded to the Town Board adopted resolutions in March, agreeing with the town’s views. The Orleans County Treasurer has sent a sales tax payment of $32,543.34 and National Grid has sent a check for $2,585.00 as a re-bate for installing the LED outdoor lighting in town. The Self-Insurance quarterly meeting will be held on April 29 at 11:00 AM at the County Office Building; Deputy Supervisor Robinson will attend.

The New York State Comptroller has sent its approval for the Water Improvement Benefit No. 12 project. Deputy Supervisor Robinson in-formed that the BAN Renewal was bid out and went to Greene County Commercial Bank at the low rate of 1.88% interest. This is a lower inter-est rate than last year. NEW BUSINESS A resume has been received from Sue Morlino, South Fancher Road resident in anticipation of the water billing clerk position currently held by Brenda Swanger, becoming vacant. Superintendent Swanger confirmed Brenda’s intention to fill that position through December 2019; that Bren-da will not be learning the new water program, but will help with moving the information from the old program to the new one. Superintendent Swanger informed he will need a new gun/computer for readings; the last cost quoted was approximately $12,000. Superintendent will con-tact the reader company and find out what he will need. Board members felt Mrs. Morlino seems very qualified. Discussion was held regarding the need for advertising when necessary and where it falls with Civil Service. Deputy Supervisor will check with Attorney Sansone and the County Civil Service office regarding the position. Assessor Cindi Davis informed the board she will retire on April 1, 2020; that she is currently working on the assessment update. Assessor Davis gave board members a guide put out by the NYS Assessors Association for succession planning. It was reported that Sweden, Clarkson and Murray have been contacted about sharing an assessor with Clarendon; none responded favorably. Hamlin, Parma and Riga are yet to be con-tacted. Deputy Supervisor Robinson stated how important it is to have someone at the Town Hall for residents to talk to. Assessor Davis will put a notice on the State Association website when she has the time. The six year appointment of all assessors in New York State will expire at the same time; many are retiring. The Town Board adopted Resolutions; as follows: (1) In opposition to new legislation that negatively impacts our courts from imposing bail on individuals arrested for crimes or that in any way alters New York State’s current laws with respect to the imposition of bail on a criminal defendant; (2) Opposing Governor Cuomo’s 2019 Budget Proposal to expand the New York State returnable container act to include sport and energy drinks, fruit and vegetable beverages and ready-to-drink coffees and teas; (3) Opposing Adult-use Regulated Cannabis Proposal in Orle-ans County with a request to State Lawmakers to take a slow and cau-tious approach with the intent to protect the health and safety of our residents; and (4) Opposing Governor Cuomo’s Red Flag Gun Seizure Proposal that would permit family members, teachers or any other par-ties to petition the state court to order the temporary removal of firearms from a person who may present a danger to others or themselves.
