SEVENTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

JULY 28, 2019 Prayer is our focus this weekend. In the Gospel, Jesus gives his disciples, and us, the Lord’s Prayer, which we have cherished through the centuries. The first two words encompass much about our faith—unity among all Christians (Our), and a sense that we are in a deeply bonded relationship with God (Father). In Genesis, we see Abraham in conversational prayer, in his creaturely humility before his Creator, seeking mercy and compassion for the innocent. The psalm is a lyrical prayer of thanksgiving and praise for the God who answered the sincere prayers of a people who had called out for help, showing them mercy. In Luke’s Gospel, the disciples want to pray like Jesus, with the same intimacy—to experience God as Abba in the depths of their being. Do we try to talk to God? Do we listen for answers? This relationship is always a work in progress.

LIFE’S PERSISTENT QUESTIONS Most of us can probably imagine (or remember) the delightful questions a young child might ask with innocence and curiosity. “What is air?” “How does a bird fly?” Answers are often met with another question: “Why?” No answer to that question is ever adequate, and so the child persists in asking—“Why? Why? Why??” A quest for knowledge? Of course, but the child’s persistence can only flourish in a relationship of trust. These conversations between the child and, typically, an older relative have the power to deepen confidence and intimacy. How like prayer this is! Humans are frail. We have questions, fears, needs. And so we pray—but how? How do we speak or relate at all to the Lord of endless life, the God of our salvation?

ASKING FOR HELP The Beatitudes praise the poor in spirit. One characteristic of those who are poor in spirit is their ability to ask for help; they know when others can provide what they lack. Today’s readings encourage us to practice poverty in spirit by asking God for what we need. What could be more natural than to ask God for good things? God is, after all, the inventor of goodness and the giver of all good things. Asking God for help puts us in conversation with God. These conversations take many forms. The reading from Genesis shows Abraham bantering with God like a skilled negotiator, while Saint Paul’s letter to the Colossians praises God for answering us even when we don’t deserve it. In Saint Luke’s Gospel, Jesus not only gives us words to use in our conversations with God (the Our Father), but also promises that God always listens to our prayers. BAPTISMS: First and Fourth Sundays of the month at 2:00 PM. Instructions for parents of children to be Baptized must be arranged with the Priests of the Parish. Only instructed Catholics should be invited as Godparents. A copy of the child’s birth certificate and sponsor certificates for the Godparents are required when you meet with the priest. CONFESSIONS: Saturday afternoon 4:30 - 5:30 PM in the Shrine Church. MARRIAGES: Arrangements should be made at least six months before the marriage takes place. SICK CALLS: Any time. SHRINE TO THE UNBORN AT ST. ANTHONY’S - A Shrine to the Unborn is installed in St. Anthony’s Shrine Church. The centerpiece of the shrine is an image of Our Lady of Perpetual Help. A Book of Life is enshrined there. Those who have suffered the loss of an unborn child, through stillbirth, miscarriage or abortion, or of a child who lived for just a short time, may have his or her name inscribed in the Book. H.A.N.D.S. (Healing and Nurturing Distraught Survivors) H.A.N.D.S. sponsors a BEREAVEMENT SUPPORT GROUP for parents who have lost a child. It is facilitated by Ann Carucci, founder of H.A.N.D.S. who lost her son & daughter–in-law in a boating accident. Their bodies were never recovered. All groups meet from 6:30 to 8:00pm. It will be held at International Headquarters, 9 Scott Drive, New City, NY 10956. The next meetings are August 7th & August 20th Services are free of charge. Ann is also available for personal one-on-one counseling sessions. H.A.N.D.S also now has a WIDOWS AND WIDOWERS GROUP facilitated by Ann Carucci, who lost her husband. THE RACHEL MINISTRY Every 20 seconds an unborn child is aborted in the United States. In the 30 years since Roe vs. Wade, the U.S. Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion on demand, the death toll has reached over 55 million. But the statistics do not document the other casualties: the mothers, fathers, grandparents and friends who are emotionally and spiritually affected. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The pilgrim experience of going by foot to Santiago de Compostella, the shrine of St. James, reached its high point this week at the feast of the Apostle, with tens of thousands of pilgrims on the road. Typically, they cover twelve to twenty miles a day through rough territory. The difficult journey and the often primitive lodging facilities are made bearable by the joy of the pilgrims, their songs and prayers. When their journey is documented properly, they receive the scallop shell, a reminder not only of James the fisherman, but also his call to fish for human beings and to baptize the nations. In the Middle Ages, those who wore this badge on their hats were granted lodging and hospitality wherever they went. Next to the palm, the sign of a Jerusalem pilgrim, the scallop shell was most highly prized. In the Middle Ages, some people so enjoyed the pilgrim road, although it was filled with discomfort and danger, that they spent most of their lives on the road. Today, some people take up the route for exercise, but are drawn gradually into the spirituality of the journey. As you make your summer travels, always fold in an element of pilgrimage: a long walk through beautiful countryside, a visit to a church, a prayer of gratitude for your journey through life’s hills and valleys.
