A one- question survey: What’s the purpose of the church? A variety of answers came back, as you might suspect. But many responses were a version of this one: The purpose of the church is to take care of our own. I sus- pect that answer is fairly common in many congregations, even if we don’t say it out loud. Who doesn’t want to be cared for? But no, our care and concern for one another (with a vague overlay of God mixed in) is not centrally why the church exists. For anyone at any age. Well, why not? The word “care” is a fairly loaded word and sometimes creates an endless spin-cycle with our emo- tions when we feel we aren’t receiving enough. This is why soap operas have a timeless appeal for so many: “You just don’t care about me, John. In fact, I now know you never have.” Boo-hoo, and so on. Pass the Kleenex. When the church’s central purpose is “care” then we set ourselves up for failure and disappointment because care is a human-based response that will always be shared sporadically and (to be honest) nar- rowly with selected people. This is not to say we should strive to be uncaring, of course. It is to say that the conglomeration of flawed and fallible people known as church will be regularly chagrined if our mutual care for one another becomes the main reason for existing. This might sound confusing. I had a former parish- ioner in another church once tell me, rather heatedly, “I thought we called you here so that we could have a pastor who took care of us!” We really need to talk if that’s your perception of why I’m here. If not care, what then is the central purpose of the church? It behooves Lutherans to look closely at scripture and also our 16 th -century confessions of origin. “The church is the assembly of all believers among whom the gospel is purely preached and the holy sacraments are administered according to the gos- pel” (Augsburg Confession, 1530, Article VII). This statement suggests that our common purpose is to gather on a regular basis for worship to receive and remember the grace of Baptism and celebrate Holy Commun- ion and its inherent gospel forgiveness. In contrast to the word “care,” these core elements of church life center first of all upon Christ, not upon me or you and our feelings. Martin Luther was absolutely obsessed with the Bible and the message of Jesus found therein. He was not named “Man of the Millennium” by Time magazine several years ago be- cause he had some good ideas based upon his care for the human race. His love and care for others found its genesis in Jesus. “Love one another,” said our Lord, “as I have loved you” (John 13:34). The little word “as” is important here. It suggests we learn as much as we possibly can about how Jesus loved. Not about how much we might care for each other based upon our best efforts on our best days. This latter love is limited, fleeting, flawed, and fickle. It can never hold a church community together—ours or any church. In contrast, Jesus can teach us how to love in a fashion that lasts and matters. His love at the center; not ours.

September 2015September 2015September 2015September 2015 The Purpose of the Church…by Pastor Frank

My friend Paul, a pastor in Virginia, once took an informal poll among his regular parishioners. A one-question survey: What’s the purpose of the church? A variety of answers came back, as you might suspect. But many responses were a version of this one: The purpose of the church is to take care of our own. I sus-pect that answer is fairly common in many congregations, even if we don’t say it out loud. Who doesn’t want to be cared for? But no, our care and concern for one another (with a vague overlay of God mixed in) is not centrally why the church exists. For anyone at any age. Well, why not?

The word “care” is a fairly loaded word and sometimes creates an endless spin-cycle with our emo-

tions when we feel we aren’t receiving enough. This is why soap operas have a timeless appeal for so many: “You just don’t care about me, John. In fact, I now know you never have.” Boo-hoo, and so on. Pass the Kleenex.

When the church’s central purpose is “care” then we set ourselves up for failure and disappointment

because care is a human-based response that will always be shared sporadically and (to be honest) nar-rowly with selected people. This is not to say we should strive to be uncaring, of course. It is to say that the conglomeration of flawed and fallible people known as church will be regularly chagrined if our mutual care for one another becomes the main reason for existing. This might sound confusing. I had a former parish-ioner in another church once tell me, rather heatedly, “I thought we called you here so that we could have a pastor who took care of us!” We really need to talk if that’s your perception of why I’m here.

If not care, what then is the central purpose of the church? It behooves Lutherans to look closely at scripture and also our 16th-century confessions of origin. “The church is the assembly of all believers among whom the gospel is purely preached and the holy sacraments are administered according to the gos-pel” (Augsburg Confession, 1530, Article VII). This statement suggests that our common purpose is to gather on a regular basis for worship to receive and remember the grace of Baptism and celebrate Holy Commun-ion and its inherent gospel forgiveness. In contrast to the word “care,” these core elements of church life center first of all upon Christ, not upon me or you and our feelings. Martin Luther was absolutely obsessed with the Bible and the message of Jesus found therein. He was not named “Man of the Millennium” by Time magazine several years ago be-cause he had some good ideas based upon his care for the human race.

Enjoy good fellowship over a meal while discussing the first part of the book, 7 Men: And the Secret of their Greatness, and planning for the upcoming year. Seven Men addresses what it means (or should mean) to be a man today. Each of the seven biographies represents the life of a man who experienced the struggles and challenges to be strong in the face of forces and circum-stances that would have destroyed the resolve of lesser men. Each of the seven men pro-filed―George Washington, William Wilber-force, Eric Liddell, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Jackie Robinson, John Paul II, and Charles Colson―call the reader to a more elevated walk and lifestyle, one that embodies the gos-pel in the world around us.

Warming Their Feet Project

Warming Their Feet Project needs your help. Since January, the Gloria Shealy

Circle has been collecting WINTER SOCKS for the needy in our community. Our

goal is to provide a pair of winter socks for each member of the families who receive

food boxes from St. Luke Methodist Church. We invite the congregation to help us

meet our goal. We need winter socks that will warm a person's feet. (Please avoid

thin socks or dollar store variety.) Donations of socks for men, women, and children can be placed in the

laundry basket by Joan's table during September and October. We need all sizes. Our distribution date will

be in November when the families pick up food boxes. Winter merchandise is arriving in stores now if you

want to start shopping. On line shoppers can type in “Winter socks” for a vast number of sites carrying the

warmer socks. Monetary donations are welcomed and we will shop for you. Place money in the envelope in

the basket

Our circle members are practicing Sacrificial Giving as we sponsor this project. Instead of buying some-

thing for ourselves, we use that money to purchase some winter socks for those in need. We ask God to

bless you as you join us in making the cold days of winter just a little bit better for so many in our commu-

nity

ST. LUKE FOOD PANTRY continues each week…

For the past two years St. John’s members have been very generous in supporting the St. Luke Methodist Church Community Food Pantry- with both non-perishable food items and cash donations. As of August we have donated over $1500 and many, many boxes of groceries this year. Your cash donations go even further- purchasing non-perishable items at a discounted price through Golden Harvest. God bless all of you for your continued commitment to helping those less fortunate. Remember that the need continues. On September 9th volunteers are needed to distribute the grocery boxes. We will meet at St. Luke to distribute approximately 150 grocery boxes. Responsibilities include greeting, check-in, inter-viewing new candidates, carrying boxes to the cars and helping with the parking lot. We will meet at 3:30pm sharp and be done by 6:00pm. If you are available to volunteer on this Wednesday, please sign-up at the Spiritual Opportunities table.

START THINKING OKTOBERFEST! This year’s event is sched-uled for October 16th, 17th and 18th. St. John’s will once again host the always popular “Bake Sale Booth”. This is a primary fundraiser for Men in Mission and WELCA. Proceeds for sale of baked goods will benefit the community. Thrivent Financial will sup-plement these funds. We depend on our congregation to donate

both baked goods and their time. Sign-up sheets will soon be out for both workers and food donations. Begin your baking now- there is plenty of room in St. John’s freezer to store items. We need LOTS OF HOME-BAKED ITEMS. Last year our shelves were empty by Saturday afternoon! This year we will be looking for some of our “younger” men to help with the booth set-up. You will receive guidance, but we need some strong arms! Please consider helping!
