6th Annual

Lessons and Carols

Sunday, December 14

4:00 pm The annual Lessons and Carols service returns to

St. Paul’s on December 14, at 4:00 pm. Featured

will be the Adult, Youth and Children’s Choirs, and

the Handbell Choir. This year we will be accompanied

by a string quartet and oboe as well as the organ.

Our tradition of displaying Nativity sets lent by St.

Paul’s members will be continued under the

leadership of Kevin Maurer and Jim Schneider. The

church will also be fully decorated for the Christmas

holiday. There will be a cookie reception afterward.

The Lessons and Carols service has come to us

through the tradition of King’s College, Cambridge,

England where it was heard for the first time in 1918

and every year since. It is a beautiful format that

allows us to hear and sing the carols of Advent and

Christmas in a candlelit setting.

Please join us for this most beautiful service.

Pastor’s

Letter

O that you would tear open the heavens and come down,

so that the mountains would quake at your presence… O Lord, you are our Father; we are the clay, and you are our potter;

we are all the work of your hand. (Isaiah 64: 1, 8- Reading for the First Sunday in Advent)

Dear Friends: As we begin this Advent season, I begin with the above words from the First Reading for the First Sunday in Advent. Advent is from the Latin adventus, meaning “coming.” It is a

season of expectancy, anticipation, and hope. The color is blue which, in the church, signifies hope. The event for which we expect, anticipate, and hope is, of course, the annual remembrance of the birth of our Savior in Bethlehem’s manger.

Our Hebrew scripture readings during Advent will all lead us in this journey of expectancy. On Advent 1 we hear those words above. I love these two thoughts Isaiah expresses. The first is a plea: “Come!” “O that you would tear open the heavens and come down.” The prophet begs God to come, acknowledging that our God is so powerful that the divine presence will cause the mountains to quake in his presence. I, for one, sometimes need to be reminded of God’s awesome, wholly-other presence and the force it wields.

Then the second thought from verse 8, is a surrender, an admission of humility. “You are our Father, we are the clay, and you are our potter; we are all the work of your hand.” It is a reminder to me that I am nothing on my own, and yet I am everything as a creation of God’s powerful yet gentle hands! The expectancy of Advent tells me that I am a child of God; I am human with a spark of the divine inextinguishable within me.

I hope, with all of the activity demanded of us at this hectic time of year, with all of the preparations and rushing we all go through to get ready for Christmas…I hope that we will all take time for Advent. The words and message of this season of expectancy and hope are so powerful and so important that we should not rush this part of the journey.

Please note these special times of worship during Advent:

Thank You

(Letter received from Rev. Mark Hanson, dated Nov. 14)

Dear Skip, Laura and the people of St. Paul's Ardmore: What a great joy and privilege it was for Ione and me to share in your 250th anniversary year celebration. We give thanks to God for your gifted pastors and staff, your marvelous musicians, your warm hospitality and your generous support for the ministries of the SEPA synod and the ELCA throughout the country and the world. Having two articulate young people give stewardship temple talks was one of many signs that the Holy Spirit is at work in and through your community of faith. We look forward to hearing about your ministries. Perhaps there even will be a future opportunity to worship with you again. We left feeling that we had made new friends. In God's grace, Mark S. and Ione E. Hanson

Pastor Laura’s ordination will be held on Saturday, December 6, at 10:00 am at the Lutheran Theological

Seminary, Philadelphia. All are welcome to attend.

Each month, a batch of newly designed customized envelopes will be mailed home along with a quarterly letter from our Pastors. (How great is it to once again say “Pastors?”) We have partnered with American Church Inc. to provide this service for the church. Please don’t worry about privacy as we control the member roster and our office staff will make any changes to your mailing address. Therefore, if your address changes throughout the year, it is imperative that you notify the church office to ensure delivery. “Life is like a stained glass window --- many of the colored panes are bright and uplifting, others are of dark hues and appear

uninviting, yet they offer balance to the whole story in the window. Stephen Ministry offers God’s light especially through the dark panes (different states of brokenness) that are often part of everyone’s life journey. With prayer, caring and better understanding, life becomes whole again with new dimensions of hope, love and God’s light.” ~ Carol White, Stephen Minister DE

Jesus is the Good Shepherd, and he wants to make sure each and every

one of his sheep are well cared for. The Stephen Ministry at St Paul’s

also wants to make sure that each member of the congregation is well

cared for. When your life seems to be in that “dark place,” be good to

yourself and allow a Stephen Minister to walk with you on your journey.

If you or someone you know could benefit from a Stephen Minister

please contact Pastor Skip or a Stephen Leader (Beth McElvenney,

Hazel Pelletreau)

Fall 2014

EVOLUTION & THE BIBLE

December 2 7:30-9:00 pm

Darwin & Divinity

Facilitator: Dr. Nelson Rivera, Assoc. Professor of

Systematic Theology, Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia

Darwin, an iconic figure in science and religion debates, is considered one

of the greatest naturalists that have ever lived. From his formal education in Divinity studies at Cambridge University, to the evolution of his scientific

thinking (evolutionary theory) and personal faith (from theism to agnosticism), Darwin is also admired for his understanding of novelty in

nature as well as for his careful assessment of the strengths and limits of his own scientific theory. Darwin’s intellectual impact moves beyond the

biological sciences by informing other ways of thinking, including religious views of the world. After Darwin, Christian theology

has never been the same.

ADVENT EVENTS

NATIVITY DISPLAY On Sunday, December 14, at 4 pm, one of our most loved traditions, the Lessons and Carols service, will take place. With all our choirs participating, the musical offerings are always beautiful, and the Scripture readings set the tone for worship. This lovely service does much to help us prepare our hearts and minds for the coming of the Christ Child. This year we will again feature a nativity display, which has become an annual tradition. All nativity sets (both serious and cute) are welcome and will be displayed in the

narthex. The sets should be delivered to the church no later than Friday, December 12 and will remain on display

until after the children’s Christmas pageant on Sunday, December 21, after which they can be claimed by their owners, although leaving them at church until after Christmas is also an option. All contributions will be greatly appreciated.

DECORATING THE CHURCH

Another traditional event in preparation for Christmas is the decorating of the church, which will take place on Saturday, December 13. Come at 9:30 am with your gloves, cutters and other tools and be part of the festivities. If you don’t have time for breakfast at home, coffee and munchkins will be available. All members (and friends) are encouraged to come; it’s lots of fun and a wonderful way to draw worshipers into the beauty of the events surrounding our Lord’s birth. Help is also needed to remove the decorations on Saturday, January 10 at 10:00 am.

The banners are up, the historical pictures are

displayed in the sanctuary and we are on our way

in celebrating our 250 years as a congregation!

Built on the foundation laid by followers in Christ

from centuries past, St. Paul’s has supported our

community both locally and globally.

One goal of our Building on Blessings campaign

is to increase our efforts to aid those in need.

This month the Stewardship Committee is

highlighting many of the good works we do. To name just a few:

cooking over 200 meals for people in need each month

helping fill food trays for the homebound

supporting our missionary in Bratislava, Slovakia, The Rev.

Miriam Schmidt

helping IHN’s efforts to provide temporary housing to

homeless people in

transition

supporting Mediator

Lutheran, an inner city

congregation

There are so many more. For a

full list, please visit the Outreach tab on our website.

We could rest on our laurels but that’s not who we are. Now with double

the pastor power and invigorated by our anniversary, we want to do

more! With your contribution to our Building on Blessings campaign,

we will do just that. Please pledge by emailing

[email protected] or donate regularly using our new

envelopes.

Do you have ideas for service projects to undertake or support? Please

pass them along to our Social Ministry chair, Laura Bickert,

ST. PAUL’S WOMEN’S RETREAT

Dates: Friday, Jan. 23 & Saturday, Jan 24, 2015

Location: Franciscan Spiritual Center, Aston, Pa.

Title/Topic: What Do Lutherans Believe? Nearly 500 years ago, a reluctant but studious monk, Martin Luther,

stood up to the church and inadvertently began the Protestant

Reformation. He cried for reform from within the church so that God's

love might be clearly proclaimed so that the consolation of grace be felt

and celebrated among all of God's people. Lutherans today trace their

theological and church roots to this brilliant and oftentimes quirky

German monk who still shapes our practice and belief in the Lutheran

church. We will explore Luther, his theology, and his humor as we

respond to the question, "What do Luther-ans believe?" (Please bring

your Bibles)

Retreat Leader: Rev. Dr. Jennifer Ollikainen The Rev. Dr. Jennifer Phelps Ollikainen served as vicar of St. Paul's

Lutheran Church in Ardmore (1999-2000), Associate Pastor of St.

Matthew Lutheran Church in Springfield (2002-2007) and Associate for

Worship Resources at the national church-wide office of the Evangelical

Lutheran Church in America (2007-2010). She is currently called as

Executive Director of Lutheran Congregational Services, an affiliate of

Liberty Lutheran Services which is a social ministry organization that

serves people in need throughout the southeastern Pennsylvania area. She

holds a Master of Divinity, Master of Sacred Theology in New Testament,

and a Doctor of Ministry in worship renewal from the Lutheran

Theological Seminary at Philadelphia.

Please note that the retreat fee covers the cost of the FSC meeting

room, overnight accommodations, breakfast and lunch on Saturday, the

leader's accommodations and meals, and a stipend for the retreat leader.

Checks should be made payable to St. Paul's, with "Women's

Retreat" in the memo line and dropped off in the church office

or given to Diane Pringle.
