From Mario to Sumos to Donald Trump, all the costumes were awesome, and the students and teachers did very well with the costumes. Many costumes followed the rules. The students of Chicora Elementary marched through the halls at 1:30 pm. The students cooperated and were great. This fun Halloween celebration was a great success. They were to answer the question, “What Makes a Hero?”, and Haylie Karenbauer responded with a poem. Haylie, daughter of Amy and Dennis Karenbauer, began her assignment by thinking about her Uncle Sam and her cousin Jesse, who both have been in the service. She brainstormed sentences that described them. She also thought about why veterans had joined a military branch. Haylie felt that they were special because they were willing to serve and protect. Veterans became her hero. (continued on page 2) Over 1000 items were collected for the veterans. What Makes a Hero? (cont)

One evening Haylie began writing. She was not sure what she should include. Her parents responded, “Do what is in your heart.” Haylie’s response to her ideas was a poem honoring the veterans of the United States of America.

Haylie’s poem brought joy and tears to all who read it. Haylie was then given the honor of reading her poem to the veterans and student body at the Veteran’s Day program. It was met with a standing ovation by all who attended. Thank you Haylie for this beautiful poem.

What makes a hero you ask?

Not a man with a cape and mask. But a person with a heart of pure gold. Who risk their lives in the bitter cold.

In rain or shine, day or night They will not tremble before the fight

The military, air force, and navy seals too All fight for the colors Red, white and blue. Generals and privates give the command.

“We will fight to free our land.” Some wounds were very serious and some just

won’t mend So they faced their pain with courage until the very

end Veterans you are my hero’s you saved so many

lives. So many thank you greatly for saving their children

and wives.

Veterans you are what makes a Hero!

America’s White Table (cont)

America’s White Table is performed with A small table to show a soldier’s lonely battle against many, A white tablecloth to signify a soldier’s pure heart when they answer their call to duty, A lemon slice and grains of salt are placed on a plate to show a captured soldiers bitter fate and the tear of their family, An empty chair for the soldier who is not here, A black napkin stands for the sorrow of captivity, An overturned glass for the dinner that will not be eaten, A white candle for peace and hope, A red rose in a vase tied with a red ribbon for the hope that all of the missing soldiers will return.

Veterans, We Salute You!
