We appreciate all of you who have volunteered for all of the events at school such as picture day and the Hawk Store. It is not too late to fill out the PTSA forms to become a member, volunteer, donate or buy a directory. You can send the forms you have into school, pick up new ones in the front office at school or download them from the PTSA link on the Randall website. Remember that with your support we can continue to provide programs, incentives and grants to the students and staff of Randall. For those of you who have at least one adult and one student who joined our PTSA we are offering a Fund- saver Card. The card will provide discounts to local restaurants and businesses and just recently came in so they were sent home through your student if you were waiting on one. We will be offering a Mixed Bag fundraiser starting on October 15. They offer a wide variety of styles and patterns of bags, organizational tools, pet accessories, kitchen accessories and other great items. They make great holiday, teacher and birthday gifts. I do want to clarify that the school’s magazine fundraiser was the school’s (run by Mrs. Johnson) and not the PTSA. She has specific plans for that money and our fundraisers are strictly to raise money for the programs the PTSA supports at the school for the students and staff. The spirit shirts from the first order are in and have been distributed. The second and last order was placed on September 28. If you have any issues with your spirit shirt order such as the wrong size was delivered to you or you were missing one please put your order in a bag with a note for us that explains the issue and turn it into the front office and we will get in touch with you. Please note though that we only ordered what was on the forms turned in and prepaid so we cannot switch out for a different size if you don’t like the one you ordered. We had the run of sizes available to try on at the Walk About in August. Students are encour- aged to wear their spirit shirt on Fridays and will receive Hawk Bucks for participating. Please send in those Box Tops with your student as the classes compete each month to see who brings in the most. Also look at our calendar to see when our restaurant Spirit Nights are and come out to support Randall with other RMS families. If you have any questions or need to get in touch with us you can email us at [email protected]. I want to thank all of our business members and partners that support our PTSA throughout the year. Please look at the list we include in each newsletter and support them as well. I would like to especially thank Pinecrest Printing for donating our entire summer booklet. Without them we could not have afforded to provide our RMS families with such a great booklet of forms and information! Sincerely, Melanie Bentley-Montanaro Randall PTSA President

Gift Cards Give Back...Go GAP!Shannon Derby

Now’s the time to start planning ahead! It seems like there’s plenty of time before the holidays get here, but why wait? Scrip Gift Cards are the perfect planning tool. Purchase gift cards for those hard to please people or for your-self; because when you purchase a Scrip Gift Card, part of the proceeds go back to RMS. There is a wide variety of retailers available, ranging from clothing to utility items to entertainment to gas and auto. Going out for dinner? Get a Scrip Gift Card and treat yourself and help the school! Want to get a nice “little something” for a teacher? How about a Starbucks card or an AMC entertainment card?

From 9/22 – 10/19, GAP Inc. is donating an extra 2%, for each gift card purchased, to our school. GAP Inc., includes GAP, Banana Republic, Old Navy, Piper Lime, and Athleta. Surely there is someone in your life who likes clothing from one of those stores.

Order your gift cards online. The Randall PTSA will submit the orders on the 15th of each month, and then they will be delivered to RMS within 5-7 business days, where we will deliver them to you via your student. Go to the Scrip Gift Card website, www.shopwithscrip.com, where the possibilities are endless and simplify your shopping needs. It’s a win-win!

Box Tops October Incentive? Chill with Jabra Chill Headphones Courtesy of MotorolaShannon Derby

Our Box Tops program is underway. Parents are clipping, students are bringing Box Tops to school, and the homeroom teachers are submitting! Each month, the homeroom class that turns in the most Box Tops will re-ceive a reward. Rewards range from doughnut parties, to free food cards at local restaurants, to this month’s item… Jabra Chill Headphones. Yes, each student in the winning home room class for the month of October will receive a brand new pair of headphones. Now, collecting and submitting Box Tops can literally be music in your child’s ears!

Box Tops for Education is a simple way for parents and students to get involved in helping their school. Join us in participating. There are three easy ways you can help raise money for our school: 1. Clip – Clip the Box Tops from hundreds of participating products and send them in with your child to Home-room. Every month, the homeroom class that collects and turns in the most Box Tops will win a prize. Each Box Top will earn Randall 10 cents when we redeem them from Box Tops for Education. 2. Shop online – Shop at your favorite online stores through the Box Tops Marketplace (boxtops4education.com/marketplace). Randall can earn boxtops with every qualifying purchase you make, at no additional cost to you. 3. Sign up to support our school at boxtops4education.com, where you can: • See how much our school is earning with Box Tops • Enter online promotions for chances to win Box Tops and other prizes • Print coupons for your favorite Box Tops brands Students should bring in all Box Tops to their home room class. Let’s aim for a goal of $3,000 again! Remember, these are collected monthly.

Reflections is Coming . . .Get Creative!Kathy McAdam Reflections is a national program sponsored by the PTA. The PTA believes all children deserve a quality

arts education and encourages students to pursue artistic expression through participation in its annual arts Reflec-tions Program. Each year, the PTA Reflections Program challenges students to create their artistic project based on a specific theme. This year’s theme is “The Magic of a Moment”. Just show us your talents! Submission date for entries will be October 10th. If you have questions, please contact Kathy McAdam at [email protected].

Hawk Bucks Store is in BusinessLinda Weiss

Do you have a Hawk Buck to spare? By now, you’re child has accumulated some Hawk Bucks that are burning a hole in his or her pocket! Let’s Talk! Help Us Help You & Your Child...We’re a TeamJill Rintoul

We need your support with our major fundraiser, the Donation Drive, and want to thank everyone that has participated thus far. We have raised just over $8,000 with our goal of $20,000 by the end of the first nine weeks. We need every family to support our PTSA in one way or another in order to reach this goal. If you have not already filled out a donation form, please consider doing so as your donation is 100% tax deductible and every dime goes back to the school. There is a form in this newsletter (see below), one on our website, or you can just send in a check made out to Randall PTSA in an envelope and have your student turn it into their HR teacher or the front office.

Be on the look-out for our traditional fundraiser called MIXED BAGS coming home with your student on October 15th. These bags are eco-friendly and make a neat holiday, teacher, and/or birthday gift. There are both boy and girl items. All students that turn in an order form will get a treat for each item ordered and their name will be put into a drawing for free bags. Please note that tax is already included in all the prices. There will be many collection days and the last day to turn in will be on October 31st. Bags should be ready for pick up by the first week in December.

We can only be successful with the support of our students and parents. We appreciate all you do to help us! Any questions or if you would like to join us on the committee, please do not hesitate to contact me at [email protected].

The Cash Donation Drive serves as our major fundraiser this year and will end 10.18.12. So don’t delay! Be on the lookout for a small school fundraiser in October for those of you who wish to support a traditional fundraiser.Where does the money go? 100% of the money goes directly to the students and staff of RMS. The PTSA hopes to help the school replace aging Elmos with Electrosmarts (a/k/a Smartboards), provide grants for the staff, student recognition and staff appreciation as well as other funds needed for special projects at the school.

What is our goal? We have raised just over $8,000 at this time, with a goal of $20,000. We need every family to support our school! Please consider a gift. How much should I give? Please give as much as you are comfort-able with. Your donation is tax deductible.

Patriot’s Day MemorialParker Webster, 8th GradeR.A.Y.S. Council

On Tuesday, September 11, 2012, Randall Middle School took action in remembering the victims of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The students, through their social studies class-es, created memorial markers for every one of the 2,988 victims which were placed in the ground in the shape of an American flag. All Randall students were able to realize

that so many people passed away and this will be a day that will always be remembered. Taking action in this project really made students at Randall feel a part of it. The victims will always be missed and remembered.

Come Out Come Out Wherever You Are!Kathi Hayes First, thank you everyone for such wonderful support for the PTSA memberships! We are down to our last few membership cards and would love to sell them in the next few weeks. Join the PTSA! You will be helping an organization that strives to help your child and his/her school.

If you have not purchased a membership for yourself and your Randall student, there is still time! If you purchased a membership at/before open house, you should have already received your membership card. Last week, the Fundsaver cards were sent home through your child’s homeroom class. If you pur-chased a parent/student membership or a business membership, you should have received a Fundsaver card.

Where Volunteers Step Up, Results FollowKathi Hayes

Thank you for such an amazing team of volunteers! We have had many opportunites for our parents to get involved...from PTSA activities to helping Mrs. Verdi with the Patriot's Day...to helping Mr. Antalek with the sorting of magazine sale orders and incentives...and, of course, Picture Day! I didn't realize there were so many ways to get involved at Randall until now! I have enjoyed meeting so many new faces and swapping middle school-aged stories with each other as we work together on different projects. If you would like to get involved, please email Kathi Hayes at [email protected]. We'd love to have more volunteers as the year progresses! You can pick and choose how little or how often you want to volunteer!

Introducing: Student Nutrition ServicesConstance Singley

They are the first school officials that students see every day. Student Nutrition Services (SNS) help students start their school days off with a positive at-titude. They provide free breakfast and warm smiles to all students each morning.

Their mission, together, creating an innovative, efficient and cost effective student nutrition program that is nationally regarded as the best. Both school and community embrace and actively support the importance of student nutrition as a vital part of daily education.

SNS operates as a self-supporting, $105 million dollar enterprise. Each day, more than 1,400 dedicated employees serve over 214,000 nutritious meals to students.

There are new standards for our school menu that must include a fruit or vegetable every day. They are phasing out all salt. At Randall, they use recipes from Chef Ben, who tweaked some old recipes, and created others that peak our students interest in vegetables. The lunchtime salad bar was a great success last year and continues to be a hit this year. Please visit www.sdhc.k12.fl.us/SNS/snsataglance.asp to get more

information about SNS.

Counselor’s CornerMelissa Miller6th Grade Counselor

The Randall Guidance department would like to welcome all the students to the 2012/2013 school year! We know it will be a success-ful year, and we’re more than happy to help achieve that in any way we can. The coun-selors by grade level are as follows:

Melissa Miller, 6th Grade Counselor, 740-3900 x255 or email [email protected] Roberts, 7th Grade Counselor, 740-3900 x233 or email [email protected] Richards, 8th Grade Counselor, 740-3900 x231 or email [email protected]

Ms. Miller provided the 6th grade orientation covering promotion requirements, study skills, bullying and Randall procedures. Ms. Roberts established new students’ schedules. Ms. Richards discussed calculating a student’s GPA, promotion requirements, bullying and study skills with 8th graders. Edline was uploaded 9/13 and will be done at least every two weeks afterwards, so please check that frequently.

Success tips handouts were available at the guidance table at the Walkabout on 8/17 and at conference night on 9/20. College information will be available at College Night at Brandon High School on 10/4 at 6PM. Financial Aid Night will be held at Brandon High School on 1/15 at 7PM. Contact your child’s guidance counselor for addi-tional dates and times.

Character Education day will take place once a month on Monday, and each grade level will be doing lessons to promote that month’s character trait (see the chart above). The guidance counselors will be going to various classes to help implement these lessons. We would like to thank Poppi’s Pizza and The Alley for sponsoring the student incentives for September. Poppi’s pizza provided a free buffet and The Alley provided a free game of bowling. Formaggio’s will be sponsoring October’s character trait.

We look forward to working closely together to help everyone succeed.
