A Message From Your Supervisor....

In addition to serving as the Township’s legal agent and Secretary to the Assessing Board of Review, the Township Supervisor is responsible for moderating board meetings, developing the township budget, recommending members to the various boards and commissions, and managing the day-to-day operations of the Township.

Bradley A. Kersten, Supervisor

On July 6, 2021 at 12:01pm, I made the decision to retire from my position as Director of Public Safety for Chesterfield Township and step into a new role as your Township Supervisor. I am honored for this opportuni-ty, and would like to thank the Chesterfield Township Board of Trustees, and the residents for trusting me with the responsibility of leading such a great community. My focus during this appointment is to enthusiastically continue to serve the community. As a 32-year employee of Chesterfield Township Police Department, including the last 6 years as the Di-rector of Public Safety, I am excited and energized to now serve as your Township Supervisor. The unique position, of having served the Community for so long, has afforded me the opportunity to create a vision of community improvement and growth as we look to the future. I plan to continue leading the Township in a positive direction, including following through on township projects currently underway. There are numerous issues I am passionate about. These being transparency, accountability, and commu-nication in government. I will work diligently with our leadership team and members of the staff to increase communication with both employees and residents of our community. We are working to distribute more information on our website (www.chesterfieldtwp.org), and on social media. A Township Facebook page has been created in an effort to communicate enhance, and inform residents daily on important news, information, and leisure activities. Both our website and Facebook page (@ChesterfieldTownshipMI) are a great source of information and will be updated regularly. I also strongly believe in the expansion and improvement of Technology (IT) within the Township. Investing in our IT infrastructure will give us a solid foundation to make informed and educated decisions regarding the advancement of technology, and the positive impact it will have for both residents and employees. In closing, I am excited to serve my community as Chesterfield Township Supervisor. I look forward to set-ting my vision in motion, and will do so to the best of my ability. I continue to be excited about the future of our community. Thank you for your support and as always, we are here to serve our community.

“Flushable” wipes should never be flushed!

Aside from causing large problems with municipal sewer systems, wipes and other items also cause problems in the pipes inside your home. Clogged pipes can lead to overflowing toilets, basement sewer backups and the need to clean out the main drain. When this happens, a plumber is needed to clear the blockage. To help avoid these problems and expenses, only flush human waste and toilet paper.

Here is a list of other items that should never be flushed:

Did you know???

• Personal and baby wipes• Tampons• Sanitary products• Condoms• Facial tissues• Paper towels• Cleaning wipes and rags

• Dental floss• Cotton balls and swabs• Cat litter• Prescription drugs• Over-the-counter medicines• Cigarette butts• Cooking fats, oils, or grease

Helpful Tips for Winterizing Your Home• Turn off your water at the meter: Close the valve after the water meter. By doing this, water

will not continuously run if a pipe bursts.• Winterize your pipes: Focus on your outside hose bibs, sprinkler system, and pipes on the

outside walls of your home. Drain the water from pipes and add insulation or heat tape.• Crawl Spaces: Insulate your crawl space and add insulation or heat tape to water pipes.• Set Thermostats: Set your thermostat to 55o F. This, in addition to keeping cabinet doors

open, will keep pipes warm enough.• Have someone check on your home: Ask a trusted person to keep watch on your home to

check for potential problems. Should a problem arise, contact the Water Department immediately to assist in further preventing potential damage.

Smoke Alarmsat Homeat Home

Smoke Alarms

Smoke alarmS are a key partof a home fire escape plan. When there is a fire, smoke spreads fast. Working smoke alarms give you early warning so you can get outside quickly.

• A closed door may slow the spread of smoke, heat, and fire.

• Smoke alarms should be installed inside every sleeping room, outside each separate sleeping area, and on every level. Smoke alarms should be connected so when one sounds, they all sound. Most homes do not have this level of protection.

• Roughly 3 out of 5 fire deaths happen in homes with no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms.

FACTS

!

!

!

SAFETY TIPS • Install smoke alarms in every bedroom. They should

also be outside each sleeping area and on every level of the home. Install alarms in the basement.

• Large homes may need extra smoke alarms.

• It is best to use interconnected smoke alarms. When one smoke alarm sounds, they all sound.

• Test all smoke alarms at least once a month. Press the test button to be sure the alarm is working.

• Current alarms on the market employ different types of technology including multi-sensing, which could include smoke and carbon monoxide combined.

• Today’s smoke alarms will be more technologically advanced to respond to a multitude of fire conditions, yet mitigate false alarms.

• A smoke alarm should be on the ceiling or high on a wall. Keep smoke alarms away from the kitchen to reduce false alarms. They should be at least 10 feet (3 meters) from the stove.

• People who are hard-of-hearing or deaf can use special alarms. These alarms have strobe lights

and bed shakers.

• Replace all smoke alarms when they are 10 years old.

COVID-19For the safety of our guests, Chesterfield Township Leisure Services will continue to make best practice decisions regarding preventative measures that reduce the spread of disease in coordination with recom-mendations by the CDC and MDHHS. Currently, your acceptance of the following is required to attend any indoor/outdoor programming at Township Facilities.

• COVID-19 Vaccinated = Mask NOT Required • Unvaccinated for COVID-19 = Mask REQUIRED Indoors • Advance registration required for most programs • Sign a liability waiver w/COVID-19 clause • Self-check for symptoms of COVID-19 prior to arrival • Bring your own pocket hand sanitizer & use it frequently

All programming is subject to cancellation or changes based on COVID-19 public health risks. By sign-ing-up with us, individuals and families agree to adapt to programming alterations as deemed necessary. Participants will receive a refund for programs that are cancelled by the Leisure Services Department; less pro-ration for classes attended and supplies. Individual or team quarantining is a risk the registrant assumes upon registration. The Leisure Services Department is unable to honor refund requests for individ-uals or teams required to quarantine. As a result, a lesser number of games/classes may be held without compensation to the registrant. If the registrant no longer wishes to participant based on their disease comfort level, refunds will be authorized in accordance with the standard refund policy.

Chesterfield Township Senior Park ProjectGROUND-BREAKING HAS BEGUN! Construction is underway on Chesterfield Township’s Senior Park. This addition will allow those 55 and older to experience the outdoors in an area they can call their ‘own’! Safe outdoor programming is set to become a reality with this innovative growth of space. Phase one of this project will include concrete, fencing, entrance sign, green space and exercise equipment. A covered pavilion will be added in 2022. Keep an eye on the progress and learn more about our Senior offerings by visiting the Senior Center. This project has been made possible through the support of the Ches-terfield Township Board and a competitive CDBG funding opportunity.
