As healthcare professionals, it is important to understand two
things about infection:
![Page 3: The Chain of Infection](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081511/568163f4550346895dd57eb3/html5/thumbnails/3.jpg)
1.the various ways infection can be transmitted
2. the ways the infection chain can be broken
![Page 4: The Chain of Infection](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081511/568163f4550346895dd57eb3/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)
There are six links
in the chain of infection :
![Page 5: The Chain of Infection](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081511/568163f4550346895dd57eb3/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
1st - The Infectious Agent
-any disease-causing microorganism (pathogen)
![Page 6: The Chain of Infection](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081511/568163f4550346895dd57eb3/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
2nd - The Reservoir Host
-the organism in which the infectious microbes reside
![Page 7: The Chain of Infection](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081511/568163f4550346895dd57eb3/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
Hosts that do not show any outward signs or symptoms of a disease but are still capable of transmitting the disease are known as carriers.
What are “Carrier Hosts”
![Page 8: The Chain of Infection](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081511/568163f4550346895dd57eb3/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
3rd - The Portal of Exit
-route of escape of the pathogen from the reservoir.
Examples: respiratory secretions, blood exposure, breaks in skin
![Page 9: The Chain of Infection](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081511/568163f4550346895dd57eb3/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
4th - The Route of Transmission
-method by which the pathogen gets from the reservoir to the new host
![Page 10: The Chain of Infection](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081511/568163f4550346895dd57eb3/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
Transmission may occur through:
direct contact
![Page 11: The Chain of Infection](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081511/568163f4550346895dd57eb3/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
air

insects

5th - The Portal of Entry
-route through which the pathogen enters its new host
![Page 14: The Chain of Infection](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081511/568163f4550346895dd57eb3/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)

6th - The Susceptible Host
-the organism that accepts the pathogen
The support of pathogen life & its reproduction depend on the degree
of the host’s resistance.
![Page 19: The Chain of Infection](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081511/568163f4550346895dd57eb3/html5/thumbnails/19.jpg)
Organisms with strong immune systems are better able to fend off
pathogens.
![Page 20: The Chain of Infection](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081511/568163f4550346895dd57eb3/html5/thumbnails/20.jpg)
Organisms with weakened immune systems are more vulnerable to the
support & reproduction of pathogens.
![Page 21: The Chain of Infection](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081511/568163f4550346895dd57eb3/html5/thumbnails/21.jpg)
-The essential part of patient care & self-protection.
How to interrupt the chain of infection:
![Page 22: The Chain of Infection](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081511/568163f4550346895dd57eb3/html5/thumbnails/22.jpg)
1. Pathogen Identification
-identification of infectious agent & appropriate treatment
![Page 23: The Chain of Infection](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081511/568163f4550346895dd57eb3/html5/thumbnails/23.jpg)
2. Asepsis & Hygiene
-potential hosts & carriers must practice
asepsis & maintain proper personal hygiene
![Page 24: The Chain of Infection](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081511/568163f4550346895dd57eb3/html5/thumbnails/24.jpg)
3. Control Portals of Exit
-healthcare personnel must practice standard precautions:
![Page 25: The Chain of Infection](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081511/568163f4550346895dd57eb3/html5/thumbnails/25.jpg)
(Control body secretions & wash hands according to protocol.)
![Page 26: The Chain of Infection](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081511/568163f4550346895dd57eb3/html5/thumbnails/26.jpg)
4. Prevent a Route of Transmission
-prevent direct or indirect contact by:
1. Proper handwashing
2. Disinfection & sterilization techniques
3. Isolation of infected patients
4. Not working when contagious
![Page 27: The Chain of Infection](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081511/568163f4550346895dd57eb3/html5/thumbnails/27.jpg)
5. Protect Portal of Entry
-Health professionals must make sure that ports of entry are not
subjected to pathogens.
(nose, mouth, eyes, urinary tract, open wounds, etc.)
![Page 28: The Chain of Infection](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081511/568163f4550346895dd57eb3/html5/thumbnails/28.jpg)
6. Recognition of Susceptible Host
-health professionals must recognize & protect high-risk patients
![Page 29: The Chain of Infection](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081511/568163f4550346895dd57eb3/html5/thumbnails/29.jpg)
•Cancer Patients•AIDS Patients•Transplant Patients• Infant & Elderly Patients

Remember--breaking the chain of infection is the responsibility of each health professional.
