Dear Brothers and Sisters: I am very happy to see the work has begun on the upper parking lot and God willing we can do the lower lot next year. I will give a full accounting of how we have paid

for everything after meeting with the finance council of the parish. A good number of large gifts to the parish have helped us to do these major repairs without increasing our debt, which we are paying down thanks to the rent from Prime Time (the preschool that is renting our building). Soon the school roof will be replaced and the heating system of the church needs to be upgraded, to say the least. Also the contractor who did the exterior work on the church is finished (some more work is needed which will be done at the same time as the school roof) and we can start to fix the church interior. As I mentioned to you many times I would like to restore the original beauty of the church and God is helping us to do so. It is amazing how many people in the parish or close to us have been able to help us with these challenging projects. I thank them and all of you who are helping in small or not so small ways. I am excited that the carnival will come back to the parish and the catechesis that will begin later this month. We see the Ephphatha healing today in the gospel, which we see in the celebration of Baptism even today. It can remind us that we are in some ways hard of hearing or unable to express ourselves fully and God cures us with his touch. The same can be true for us today: God can heal us through his sacraments, through the Scriptures, through the preaching if we open ourselves to it. May God give us his grace to receive his Word with faith.

DAILY MASS SCHEDULE

Starting in September the 7:30 AM Masses will resume on Mondays and Fridays.

Please join us when you can; it is a great way to start the day.

PARISH OUTDOOR MASS-PICNIC                          September 30, 2012 CARNIVAL September 28-29-30, 2012 Our parish outdoor mass, picnic and carnival is fast approaching at the end of September. Please take a moment to fill in the RSVP slips that are left in the pews to let us know if you are planning on attending the outdoor mass and picnic on September 30 and how many people you anticipate bringing. These slips will be in the pews for the next 3 weekends. You can drop them in the collection basket or at the gift card table. We are looking for volunteers to staff the game booths and help with set-up and clean-up. If you are interested, there are forms in the pews to sign up as well as a master sign-up list at the back of the church. This is a great opportunity for the students to also get their service hours completed. Your donation of time to this event will ensure its success. Thanks in advance for all your help!!

St. Jean-Gabriel Perboyne Saint of the Week

A sermon he heard at age 15 inspired today’s saint to become a missionary in China. There he met a brutal death on a cross for refusing to renounce his faith. Born in France in 1802, Jean-Gabriel became a Vincentian priest. He displayed so many gifts and had such fine personal and spiritual qualities that, for a time, his religious order kept him busy closer to home. He finally received permission to begin his missionary endeavors in 1835. After a 1,000-mile trip by boat and foot across three provinces, he arrived in central China. In one early letter written to his community in Paris he described himself as a curious sight: “my head shaved, a long pig-tail, stammering my new languages, eating with chopsticks.” He soon joined the Vincentians in helping to rescue abandoned Chinese children and in educating them in the Catholic faith. He was arrested in 1839 under an edict that banned Christianity. He was tortured and interrogated for months. Almost one year later he was executed by strangling while hanging on a cross. St. Jean-Gabriel was canonized by Pope John Paul II in 1996. Chinese government officials denied permission for any public Mass commemorating the new saint.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Turning the calendar page to September marks a new beginning in the lives of many who live by the academic year. Traditionally the start of the school year in the United States, this month can bring to mind the many calendars by which we live. There are fiscal years, academic years, television seasons, sports seasons—the list seems endless. Added to all of these is, of course, the liturgical year. A Christian of the first century or so would have been hard-pressed to understand what we mean by a feast day or holy day. That person would have understood Sunday as the primary feast day, and Easter as the primary Sunday. It was only over time that the Church began to set aside particular days and seasons to commemorate certain events or highlight selected mysteries of the faith. What has evolved over the centuries is a “map” of our faith, written on the days and seasons of the year. Some have observed that one will absorb all the major teachings of the Church in the course of a single year of Sundays if one is attentive. What a wonderful way to get Christianity “into our bones!” And best of all, there are no grades!

ARCHDIOCESE OF NEWARK We are celebrating the 25th. Anniversary of Ordination of the Episcopacy of Archbishop John

J Meyers on Saturday., September 22., 2012 at 10:00 am at the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart. Ten people can come from our parish. If you would like to attend please call the parish office to make arrangements. Thank you...

NEWLY RENOVATED LAMPS The hanging lamps in the church have all been

rewired and repainted and new glass has replaced the old, yellow ones. In addition new energy

efficient lights are being used and our electric bill in May was $306; in the fall it was usually around

$900. The work was done by two men who charged us very little for their labor. If a company had done this work it would have been $2,000 per

light, at least. Two larger lamps have been sponsored by a generous parishioner for $500 each. We are very grateful to him. The smaller

lamps can be sponsored for $150 each. Thank you for your generosity!

HOLY NAME SOCIETY

The next Holy Name Society meeting will be held on Sunday, September 9, 2012 at 9 AM, in the Michael Judge Room of the Parish Rectory. We also welcome anyone who is interested in becoming a member to please

attend. Thank you for your participation!!
