Briefs From Father McMahon
SPRING IS HERE AT LAST!
I am very grateful to everyone involved in last night’s “LET”S MAKE A DEAL” live Auction and Dinner benefitting our wonderful St. Peter School. This year’s First Communion and the School Play are coming very soon. Once Holy Week and Easter have been properly observed, the usual “Rites of Spring” take place-along with weddings, anniversaries, Priesthood Ordinations, plus all scheduled school, religious education and parish events. Spring IS busy, but filled with the renewed life of Jesus Christ in the Holy Spirit. In Luke’s Gospel for this Sunday, (and, please note, we turn to Luke’s writing from this year’s usual St. Mark selection), the effect of the Resurrection is that the Risen One opens the eyes of the disciples to see that the scripture which they had always known have also been pointing ahead to Jesus and His Resurrection. For Jesus and the early believers what we now refer to as the Hebrew Scriptures were the only texts that they knew. But now, having come to believe in what God had accomplished in Jesus Christ, those scriptures take on a new and incredible richness and meaning. The second reading from John’s Letter clearly states “… for, whoever keeps his word, the love of God is truly perfected in him.” What a leap in the understanding of Jesus and scripture before the entire mystery and mission of Jesus Christ. We can also see ourselves and others in a new light of Easter. We have all been on a pilgrimage that began on Ash Wednesday with dirty foreheads and many good intentions. How many have we been able to fulfill? Have you felt yourself being drawn more deeply into the stories of salvation as told throughout Lent and Easter? Do you feel that God has somehow changed you inside this Lent/Easter? Notice the beauty of the Lord’s attempts to convince his disciples of his Resurrection. He reveals the love and forgiveness of a God who simply will not rest until they have come to believe. THIS ALSO INCLUDES US. May we all give thanks for the perseverance of Divine Love, which draws us into God, the source of all lasting peace. Let our hearts be free of all paralyzing anxiety and flooded with the healing grace of Jesus Christ! This is both our gift and our Easter Joy!

SAINTS AND SPECIAL OBSERVANCES Sunday: Third Sunday of Easter Tuesday: St. Anselm Wednesday: Administrative Professionals Day; Earth Day Thursday: St. George; St. Adalbert Friday: St. Fidelis of Sigmaringen; National Arbor Day Saturday: St. Mark
TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION With the Easter season well under way, we now resume our survey of the sacrament of the sick. The pastoral care of the sick will be misunderstood if we start from the vantage point of the sickroom. Begin with the Sunday assembly, from which the sick person has been separated by the crisis of illness, and whose absence is given expression in prayer and service. The goal is to extend the consolation of the Lord’s presence at the table to those who are apart from it, and for the assembly to enfold them in prayer. Secondarily, the goal is to teach people what the Church desires for all those who are sick. Seeing ministers dispatched to the sick from Mass every Sunday might help a caregiver realize that their dear one can also receive Communion. Witnessing the anointing of a woman facing surgery might help another person to overcome hesitation and ask for the sacrament’s healing and strength. Society’s impulse may be to marginalize the sick, but the tradition of our community is to see them at the center of our life. When Roman persecutors ordered St. Lawrence the Deacon to hand over the jewels of the church, he assembled a motley crew of the sick and the infirm and announced with all hu-mility, “Behold, my lord, the treasures of the church of Christ.”

Formation & Education From The Desk Of Mary Leonard From The Desk Of Father Semmer
Question of the Week: How Do We See Things?
As people age their vision changes, we don't see as well as we did when we were younger. I remember when I got my first pair of bifocals, it was an adjustment for me as it is for many people. The technician warned me to be careful going down stairs. Sure enough, looking down through the lens, the stairs became blurry. Then comes cataracts, when it becomes difficult to see objects clearly. Eventually they have to be removed. These are adjustments in seeing that all people will eventually face in their lives. Our vision is important for us to have. It enables us to read, to look at others, to be able to drive. Our vision allows us to interact with others. It is great for us to have. But there are times when our minds can persuade what we see and how we see things. Sometimes our own prejudice can influence what we think we see. This has proved itself quite evident in a few incidents with police officers, recently, and how they handle the people they are coming in contact with. The officers tell things the way they felt they happened and then a video reveals a different scenario to what actually happened. Being an officer is not an easy task. When the disciples see Jesus, they believe it is a ghost because in their minds they know that He was crucified and died. They also know that He rose from the dead. That concept was difficult for their minds to comprehend. So they became startled and terrified when they first see him. They finally believe it is Jesus when he shares with them, "...a ghost does not have flesh and bones..." It is important for us to look at how we see things in our world. Not only realizing that our vision may be changing but also from that we might be unduly influenced by our minds in how we see things. Sometimes it is good for us to step back and think about how we look at things and how they are perceived by us. It helps us understand things better if we are able to see both sides of an event or the things that happen in our world. It also helps us to be able to understand our relationships and people better. It helps us to appreciate the life that our Lord has given us. It all matters on how we are able to see things. Fr. Dean Semmer
