The Epistle: I Corinthians 11:23-26 Brethren, I received from the Lord what I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, “This is my body which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” In the same way also the chalice, after supper, saying, “This chalice is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.” For as often as you eat this bread and drink the chalice, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes. V. The Word of the Lord. R. Thanks be to God.

The Holy Gospel: St. Luke 9:11b-17 V. The Lord be with you. R. And with thy spirit.

V. A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Saint Luke. R. Glory be to thee, O Lord.

At that time, Jesus spoke to the crowds of the kingdom of God, and cured those who had need of healing. Now the day began to wear away; and the Twelve came and said to him, “Send the crowd away, to go into the villages and country round about, to lodge and get provisions; for we are here in a lonely place.” But he said to them, “You give them something to eat.” They said, “We have no more than five loaves and two fish – unless we are to go and buy food for all these people.” For there were about five thousand men. And he said to his disciples, “Make them sit down in companies, about fifty each.” And they did so, and made them all sit down. And taking the five loaves and the two fish he looked up to heaven, and blessed and broke them, and gave them to the disciples to set before the crowd. And all ate and were satisfied. And they took up what was left over, twelve baskets of broken pieces. V. The Gospel of the Lord. R. Praise be to thee, O Christ.

Be to us at our last hour the source of consolation.

Procession to the Shrine & Benediction of the Most Blessed Sacrament

After the Postcommunion prayer, with all kneeling, the Celebrant places the Sacred Host in the Monstrance. Then, he kneels and censes the Blessed Sacrament as the following hymn is sung:

Page 4: The Cathedral of Our Lady of Walsingham · ~ Fourteenth-century hymn, Pope Innocent VI (d. 1342) Procession to the Shrine & Benediction of the Most Blessed Sacrament After the Postcommunion

The following act of adoration is then said by all:

JESUS my Lord and my God, Son of the living God and Son of the Virgin Mary, I believe that thou art here, and I adore thee. Under the form of the Sacred Host I believe that thou art present, in all the perfection of thy Manhood and Divinity, and I adore thee. With the Angels of thy court, and with thy holy Mother Mary, and with all thy Saints, I kneel in humble adoration. Jesus, my Lord, I thee adore, O make me love thee more and more. Amen. The procession forms with the canopy, etc. As the procession makes its way to the Shrine, the following psalm is chanted by the choir, and repeated as necessary:

Hymn: O Salutaris Hostia Martyr Dei

Psalm 78 [Interrupit mare] Chant, Samuel Wesley (1766-1837)

He divided the sea, and | let them • go | through; he made the | waters • to | stand on • an | heap. In the day-time also he led them | with a | cloud, and all the night | through • with a | light of | fire.

He clave the hard rocks | in the | wilderness, and gave them drink thereof, as it had been | out of • the | great | depth. He brought waters out of the | sto-ny | rock, so that it | gushed | out • like the |rivers.

Yet for all this they sinned | more a- | gainst him, and provoked the Most | High- est | in the | wilderness. They tempted God | in their | hearts, and required | meat | for their | lust.

They spake against | God • also, | saying, Shall God prepare a | ta-ble | in the | wilderness? Because they believed | not in | God, and put | not their | trust in • his | help.

So he commanded the | clouds a- | bove, and | open'd • the | doors of | heaven. He rained down manna also upon them | for to | eat, and | gave them | food from | heaven.

Having arrived at the Shrine, and the psalm over, the following hymn is sung. The Celebrant again censes the Blessed Sacrament at the second verse of the hymn.

Page 6: The Cathedral of Our Lady of Walsingham · ~ Fourteenth-century hymn, Pope Innocent VI (d. 1342) Procession to the Shrine & Benediction of the Most Blessed Sacrament After the Postcommunion

Standing the Celebrant says:

Thou gavest them bread from heaven. People: Containing within itself all sweetness. Celebrant: Let us pray. O God, who under a wonderful Sacrament hast left unto us a memorial of thy Passion: grant us, we beseech thee, so to venerate the sacred mysteries of thy Body and Blood; that we may ever perceive within ourselves the fruit of thy redemption. Who livest and reignest with the Father and the Holy Ghost ever, one God, world without end. Amen.

The Celebrant then gives the Benediction as the bell is rung. The Divine Praises follow.
