Why Quantity is not an adequate substitute In 2013, NAVEX Global commissioned an independent market study of senior level ethics and compliance decision makers. Over 300 responses were gathered, analyzed and summarized by a global third party research firm. Respondents comprised key roles in ethics, compliance, legal, human resources and risk at organizations of all sizes and industries. Our findings from the study span many compliance program topics, but we were particularly intrigued by those related to online training. In this Infographic we explore what survey participants had to say about how much training they deploy and the importance of training quality. I’ll set the stage by noting the study revealed that ethics and compliance professionals consider online training to be the most important solution in their program. Sixty percent of respondents rated Online Training “most important”, while Case Management and Policy Management solutions were tied for a distant 2nd garnering 43% of the “most important” votes. Looking at the percentages in the Infographic you’ll notice that they don’t add up to 100%. This is because respondents had the ability to rate multiple solutions “most important.” Budgets also signaled that online compliance training receives the most funding, making up 26% of the total compliance budget with Case Management again a distant 2nd at 17%. [Continue below the Infographic] The importance placed on online training solutions is not surprising considering the legal and regulatory mandates to train, and the complexity and cost of building and maintaining quality training content. But not all training vendors focus on the quality of course content. Many perpetuate the misconception that it is important to have access to a large training library when in reality usage data reveals the opposite. Survey results revealed that ethics and compliance professionals deploy very few online compliance training courses: • On average, just 5 courses are deployed annually to all employees • On average, only 10 courses are needed in a long-term training library of greater than 2 years • 92% percent of all organizations need fewer than 25 course titles in a long-term training library, and • A whopping 38% of organizations DO NOT USE all the courses they purchase. Contrast these usage statistics with the number of titles touted by e-learning providers in these real quotes: • …more than 900 courses in varying lengths and formats… • …expanded the number of titles in an on-the-shelf library to more than 500 • …world’s largest and most dynamic portfolio of award-winning online titles Buy training you need and not what a vendor tells you that you need. Look at the quality of the library, whether it serves your needs over a 2-3 year period – not how big the library is. If you are going for volume in your training library, you are likely wasting money and using stale conte
