The Carswell

Times 25th September 2020

Our year three Monarch class have been investigating sound in their science lessons. They took clipboards out onto the

playground and spent five minutes listening really carefully to all the sounds around them. They heard distant traffic, the

rustle of wind through the trees, the cry of a red kite, younger children playing in EYFS and a distant siren. In the next les-

son they’ll be learning about how the sound travels into their ear. Great work Monarch!

The straw oboe orchestra! More sound science happened this week with the Year four Swallowtail class. They designed and tested

‘straw oboes’ outside. As part of the experiment they made straw oboes of different length to see if the

pitch changed. They had to persevere and adjust thier mouth technique to get a sound out of them and

I saw some great peer support! I wonder if they’d be able to tune them to play a whole orchestral

piece?

This human can... In this article, I interviewed Eduardo in Year five Purple Emperor about his

passion for martial arts...

Good to have you here Eduardo. What is the martial art that you train in?

Eduardo: It’s called Jeet Kune Do and was created by Bruce Lee, a famous Martial artist and actor.

Who teaches you?

I have three sensei and it’s with Can Do martial arts club in Abingdon.

What made you choose martial arts?

It’s a great place to make friends, I can spend time with a friend I have at school there and I wanted to learn how to de-

fend myself when I got older. I also want to be a martial arts teacher like my grandad.

What’s your favourite thing about the lessons?

I like to do stick work, kick boxing and I like the gradings. I feel proud of myself when I pass and proud of others when

they pass too.

What belt are you?

I got my brown belt in august and after three more gradings I’ll be a black belt.

Thank you Eduardo, good luck with your future gradings!

We are having our Monday morning and Friday celebration assemblies via Zoom this

term but continue to celebrate all the great learning, kindness and Carswell spirit that

we see around the school on a daily basis. To ensure maximum learning time we are giv-

ing one special certificate each week, nominated by the class teacher.

Poppy in Wood White class for always being kind to everyone in the class

and helping anyone who needs it!

Caspar in Chrysalis class for sharing toys with his friends

Lily G in Red Admiral class for being so helpful in the mornings and

throughout the day

James in Purple Emperor class for always being kind and polite to both

classmates and staff. Well done for being a brilliant member of our class!

Esmay in Swallowtail class for offering to look after a friend when they

were feeling sad.

Jacob L in Monarch class for being kind in PE this week by letting someone

go first even though he was excited for his turn.

Judah in Tortoiseshell class for noticing that a friend was feeling upset and

going out of his way to include them in a running race.

Fred in Peacock class for being kind and caring and offering kind support

to others.

Well done to you all, we are all so proud of you!

Dear Carswell community,

The weather turned colder this week so scarves and hats were the order of the day by Friday. We are staying safe by making sure the classes are well ventilat-ed so we suggest that as it turns colder your child/ children wear a vest or simi-lar to keep warm while learning in class.

Well done to all for your careful consideration of others by social distancing at drop off and pick up but I’d like to remind all parents waiting at Gates one and two to stand to one side against the wall 2 metres apart to allow for people to use the pavement safely.

The parents at Gate three can come into the car park but please socially dis-tance and avoid sitting on the wall of the house across the road. We have been thinking about ways of making it safer at drop off in morning and will let you know when we have finalised plans and how they may affect you.

Finally, we encourage you all to wear a mask at drop off and pick up to make our community extra safe and send the message that we are taking steps to ensure we stay COVID free.

F.O.C.S. (Friends of Carswell School) met virtually this week to discuss the year ahead. It will be difficult to run all the usual yearly events this year because of COVID restrictions but the members came up with many creative and inspired ways of fundraising for our school. Keep an eye out for ParentMail communica-tions on up-coming events and if you’d like to get involved in any capacity you can email Emma Bolsover at [email protected].

Although you may have heard there are confirmed positive COVID cases in schools in Abingdon as yet we have had no cases in our school. This is I’m sure due to the hard work of staff, parents and other stakeholders ensuring they are following our risk assessment and guidelines.

Let’s keep safe and make sure it stays that way. Please have a look at our website welcome page where there is information about identifying symptoms and where to seek advice.

Have a lovely weekend, I’ll see you on the gates.

Best wishes

Mr Crandon
