The Carne Trust Chamber Competition 2020

I am delighted to welcome you to the final of the inaugural Carne Trust Chamber Competition. The Carne Trust exists to support young talent in the performing arts, and we are passionate about creating opportunities for emerging artists to develop their professional skills in advance of a career in the arts. The Carne Trust has enjoyed a long and happy association supporting chamber music at Trinity Laban, which is now in its fifteenth year. The Competition was conceived to celebrate excellence in chamber music at Trinity Laban, and to encourage students to work collaboratively to form ensembles to learn and perform together. Tonight, four very different ensembles compete for the Carne Trust Chamber Competition Prize 2020 and I am very much looking forward to hearing all of them and the range of music they bring to the stage.

WelcomeI am very pleased to welcome you to Blackheath Halls this evening for the final of the inaugural Carne Trust Chamber Competition 2020. Chamber music is a central focus of training at Trinity Laban. Regular chamber concerts, masterclasses and coaching days form part of our core provision for Strings, Piano and Wind, Brass & Percussion students, with a wide variety of opportunities for chamber performance collaboration available across the curriculum for Composition, Jazz and Vocal students too. It is only fitting that we introduce a competition dedicated to recognising and celebrating these skills, and I am delighted that with the support of The Carne Trust we have been able to make this possible.

Postponement due to Covid-19The inaugural final of the Carne Trust Chamber Competition had originally been due to take place in July 2020 in the Purcell Room at the Southbank Centre but this was rescheduled due to Covid-19. As a result of current international travel restrictions, two chamber groups who were successful in the preliminary rounds of the competition in Spring 2020 are now unable to perform in the Final and we would like to give them a special mention here:

The inaugural Carne Trust Chamber Competition celebrates the incredible wealth of chamber music happening at Trinity Laban.Open to student ensembles from across our Faculty of Music, the competition is the premier showcase for the technical prowess and musical creativity of student ensembles.Preliminary rounds took place at King Charles Court and Blackheath Halls in early March 2020. The live final will see the four ensembles compete for a share of the £3000 prize fund, generously supported by The Carne Trust.

Alan Davey CBE Chair of the Adjudication Panel

Alan Davey CBE is Controller, BBC Radio 3, BBC Proms and BBC Orchestras and Choirs and Social Mobility Champion for BBC. From 2008–2014, he was Chief Executive Officer at Arts Council England. This followed an extensive career in the Civil Service, where his roles included Head of Arts Division and Director of Arts and Culture at the DCMS, secretary of the Royal Commission on Long Term Care, and Head of European Business at the Medicines Control Agency.Public positions past and present include Vice Chair, English Folk Dance and Song Society (2017–); Board Member Hall for Cornwall (2018–); Council Member & member of Audit Committee, University of Birmingham (2014–); Chair RPS Awards Festivals and Concert Series Panel (2010–2014); Chair, International Federation of Arts Councils and Cultural Agencies (IFACCA) (2009 – 2014); Member, Cultural Olympiad Board (2010 – 2013); Member, Creative Industries Council (2011–2015); Member, Access to Professions working group/ forum (2011– 2014).Alan Davey has a BA (Hons) from the University of Birmingham, an M.Litt from Merton College Oxford and MA from Birkbeck College London. He was a 1998 Fulbright Fellow at the University of Maryland. He holds Honorary Doctorates from the University of Birmingham and the University of Teesside.In the 2015 New Year Honours, he was awarded a CBE for services to the Arts.Alan Davey took the position of Chair of Governors at Trinity Laban on 2 July 2020.

The Undercroft Trio have been playing together since their first year of undergraduate study at Trinity Laban. Taking the works of Beethoven as a cornerstone for their chamber playing, they have since branched out to cover all genres of music, from jazz to contemporary. Since they formed, they have had a multitude of performance opportunities including two informal recitals at Wigmore Hall, and public recitals around the home counties. Since the beginning of their final years at Trinity Laban, they successfully auditioned for the Carne Trust Chamber Award, which granted them exclusive masterclasses with the Linos Trio, amongst other resident groups. Having benefited from these masterclasses, whilst working with Matthew Denton of the Carducci Quartet, they went on to become finalists for the Intercollegiate Piano Trio Competition at Chetham’s School in Manchester, performing works by Shostakovich and Dvořák. They plan to continue making music together and sincerely enjoy the rehearsal process, and always strive to perform with a full array of emotions.

Levedy is an all-female vocal and harp chamber ensemble formed in early 2020 by a quintet of students studying at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance.Their experience is garnered from a vast array of choirs and ensembles including the choirs of Queens’, Robinson and Trinity colleges, Cambridge, the Old Royal Naval College Trinity Laban Chapel Choir, the Philharmonia Chorus, the National Youth Choir of Scotland, Emma Kirkby’s Dowland Works, the Facade Ensemble and orchestras such as the London City Philharmonic, the CBSO Youth Orchestra and the Swiss Youth Orchestra (SJSO). Levedy has greatly enjoyed exploring underperformed works for upper voices with harp: future plans include a tour around the United Kingdom, a particular highlight being a concert featuring music by Britten and Holst’s Choral Hymns from the Rig Veda in St Margaret’s, Putney, next month.The members of Levedy, a Middle English word meaning ‘lady’ inspired by the language in Britten’s Ceremony of Carols, are particularly interested in the juxtaposition of solo and ensemble voices with harp, and cultivating a rich, unique and mature blend. They are grateful to have benefited as a group from coaching with Linda Hirst and Gabriella Dall’Olio.Levedy is honoured and delighted to be finalists in this inaugural Carne Trust Chamber Competition.

Based in Greenwich, the SE Guitar Quartet was founded in September 2018 and is made up entirely of Trinity Laban students. Since then, the group has had the pleasure of performing in many concerts, having been engaged by a variety of venues across London. These include the Old Royal Naval College Chapel, St. Alfege Church, Morden College, Southwark Cathedral, Kings Place and Wigmore Hall, as well as being part of the Royal Greenwich Guitar Festival 2019. They have been tutored by Graham Anthony Devine, Augustin Wiedemann and Xuefei Yang in lessons and masterclasses.

Big Smoke Brass UK consists of six Trinity Laban classical undergraduates featuring: two trumpets, two flugelhorns, tuba and percussion. The ensemble’s unorthodox line-up comprises a pair of flugelhorns as an alternative to the brass quintet’s horn and trombone. The addition of percussion helps create a unique sound world, different from that of any other conventional brass chamber ensemble.Since forming in 2017, Big Smoke Brass UK have been changing perceptions of brass music with their high versatility, performing across many genres of music. The band’s hard-hitting, high-energy performances of pop songs show a completely different character at the group’s disposal. The ensemble’s versatility has provided the group with many performance opportunities, including: playing live on the BBC Radio 3 In Tune programme, participating in the Philip Jones Brass Spectacular at St John’s Smith Square, establishing two of their own recital series’, appearances in UK festivals, releasing their own EP ‘Launch’ and a busy schedule of private functions up and down the country. The ensemble’s performances are distinctive with all of their repertoire re-orchestrated/arranged by members of the group.
