We are thrilled to partner with our friends in the Cultural District , the Pittsburgh CLO, to offer you this intimate and unique theater experience.

We are proud to be your host at the Cabaret, which is owned and operated by The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust and is part of the Theater Square complex, located in the Cultural District. Theater Square encompasses not only the Cabaret and adjacent Backstage Bar, but also several convenient amenities: a parking facility, centralized box office where patrons may purchase tickets to any Cultural District performance, and a live broadcast studio operated by WQED-FM 89.3.

Welcome to this performance of Plaid Tidingsin the Cabaret at Theater Square.

Dear Friends,

It’s downright miraculous: Just when the frost hit and the papers were full of stories of people’s hearts freezing over, those angelic, madras-sporting guys descended on Pittsburgh to spread some heat and remind us of the goodwill of the season. Yes, folks, here to croon your favorite holiday tunes are the four and only Plaids. I am delighted that you’ve joined us for their triumphant return.

Pittsburgh CLO has much in store for you in the upcoming year, starting this winter with a show for those (like me) who anticipate being seriously humor deficient. I’m excited to announce that we’ll be debuting a brand new musical comedy written especially for the CLO Cabaret, starring a TV-type personality named “Judge Jackie Justice” and the zany antics in her courtroom. The production features music by award-winning songwriters Kooman and Dimond, and I’ll be directing, so please be a friend and join us for this premiere. Also, mark your calendars for two other shows debuting next spring and summer: Ring of Fire, boasting the music of the one and only Johnny Cash, and, back by popular demand, Dixie’s Tupperware Party. (Dixie’s been teasing her hair since her last visit in preparation.) By purchasing all three shows as a Cabaret Subscription Package you’ll achieve the sacred theater-going trifecta of seeing a brand new musical (Judge Jackie Justice), a musical new to Pittsburgh (Ring of Fire), and the sublime Miss Dixie herself, all at downtown’s trendiest venue.

Next year’s forecast is looking rosy over at the Benedum Center too, perhaps due to CLO’s 2014 Summer Season of Broadway musicals. Our blockbuster line-up has something for the whole family with: Singin’ in the Rain, Legally Blonde The Musical, Footloose, CATS, Monty Python’s Spamalot and the National Tour of Evita, a special production straight to you from Broadway. Your program has information on how to take advantage of a Cabaret Subscription Package, Season Tickets, and, this being the most wonderful time of the year, Pittsburgh CLO Gift Certificates for Two, the ideal present for even the choosiest on your holiday list: You buy the certificate and let them pick the show. (Talk about heaven-sent.)

Thank you for being here.

Enjoy the show!

2013-2014

Once upon a time, there were four guys (Sparky, Smudge, Jinx and Frankie) who loved to sing. They all met in high school when they joined the Audio Visual Club. Discovering that they shared a love for music and entertaining, they got together and dreamed of becoming like their idols – The Four Freshmen, The Hi-Lo’s and The Crew-Cuts. They rehearsed in the basement of Smudge’s family’s plumbing supply company. It was here they became Forever Plaid - a name that connoted the continuation of traditional values, of family, home and harmony. Although Rock ‘n’ Roll was racing down the fast lane like a candy-apple “Vette,” they believed in their music. Finally, they landed their first big gig at the Airport Hilton Cocktail Bar, “The Fusel-Lounge.”

En route to pick up their custom-made plaid tuxedoes, they were slammed broadside by a school bus filled with eager Catholic teens. The

teens were on their way to witness The Beatles make their US television debut on “The Ed Sullivan Show” and, miraculously, escaped uninjured. The members of Forever Plaid were killed instantly.

Through the power of harmony and the expanding holes in the ozone layer in conjunction with the position of the planet and all that astro-technical stuff, they were allowed to come back to perform the show that never was.

Now, they’ve returned to earth again. At first they aren’t sure why they’ve returned, but a phone call from the heavenly Rosemary Clooney lets them know that they’re needed to put a little harmony into a discordant world.

Have their heavenly rehearsals kept them in tune or will the guys let Rosemary down? will they succeed in their harmonious mission?

For those of you who have never seen FOREVER PLAID, we’ve included notes from the original production - it’s good back-story. For those of you who have seen PLAID, I sincerely want to take this opportunity to say, “Thank you for coming back and sharing your very precious time with us.”

For over a decade, I resisted creating a holiday sequel based on FOREVER PLAID. I was stubborn about it. Sequels are for movies like-- RAMBO, LORD OF THE RINGS, HOME ALONE, LEGALLY BLONDE, INDIANA JONES, HARRY POTTER, etc. I tried to explain this when I was approached to create a follow up to FP. (Can you imagine-PLAID ALONE TwO, LEGALLY PLAID, SPARKY POTTER AND THE CUMMERBUND OF FIRE, THE LORD OF THE PLAIDS, INDIANA JONES AND THE TEMPLE OF PLAID???)

However, right after 9/11, I was approached by the PASADENA PLAYHOUSE to create a Holiday edition of PLAID. It was at a time when we all needed a little joy and a little cozy Holiday fun to lift spirits. FOREVER PLAID has been embraced by many wonderful communities, so I attempted to create a little Holiday Party of Plaid for the Playhouse. After the first year of the show, various other theatres asked if they could do PLAID TIDINGS. Over the past few years the show has evolved to what you are going to experience tonight (or this afternoon).

Each year brings its share of joys and tribulations for the world, our country and our loved ones. Here’s hoping a little toasty, cozy, musical, holiday cheer will put you in the mood to appreciate all the good stuff that is always around us.

Not only is the physician often a member oforganizations such as the American College of Phlebology (ACP) andthe American Venous Forum (AVF) but they have met additionalrequirements set by the certifying board. After meeting theserequirements, he or she must then pass a certifying exam allowing thephysician to identify him or herself as board-certified.

Is membership the same as board certification? This question is particularly important as it defines the specialty of

a phlebologist. While a physician may be a member of many differentorganizations, these organizations only require an interest in the fieldfor joining. Thus membership is unlike board certification wherequalification is determined through training and testing. Here’s howthe ACP defines its board certification: “The establishment of a BoardCertification Exam brings recognition to both the field of phlebologyand those providers in the field who have the knowledge, skills andexperience to provide quality care to phlebology patients.”

I had a free screening at ahealth fair and was told thatI don't have venous disease, but I still have aching, painand discoloration at theankles. What should I do?

While free screenings can beinformative, remember that this isjust a brief glance into a patient'svenous system. A complete venousexam and venous mapping by aboard-certified phlebologist is bestto determine if a patient has venousdisease.

Since a proper venous ultrasoundis such an integral part of thisevaluation, the American College ofPhlebology has set requirements for itthat include the following:• A venous ultrasound should be ordered by a

physician.• A lower extremity ultrasound should study the entire leg, from ankle

to groin. Failure to identify and treat all sources of reflux may resultin outright treatment failure.

• Evaluation of the venous system should be performed with the patientin the upright position. Sitting or lying down are inappropriate forthe detection of reflux or the measurement of vein diameters.

• A venous ultrasound should be performed by a trained physician or aregistered vascular ultrasound technician (RVT) and theninterpreted by a physician.

If I have had an evaluation elsewhere, can I still be evaluated in your office?

Of course. A free evaluation is commonly ‘ free’ because patientsare often not meeting with a physician, a physician assistant or a nursepractitioner, so this visit cannot be billed to insurance. However, mostinsurances allow for a second opinion. If you have any questionsabout the second opinion being covered, contact member services onthe back of your insurance card.
