Summary

The year 2014 is rich in anniversaries. We celebrate Richard Strauss with three Bel Air Media productions: Die Frau ohne Schatten from the Bayerische Staatsoper, Elektra staged by Patrice Chéreau at the Festival d’Aix en Provence and Der Rosenkavalier from Zurich Opera.

Ivan Alexandre's acclaimed production of Hippolyte et Aricie at the Paris Opera marks the 250th anniversary of the death of Jean-Philippe Rameau in grandiose style. Also from the Paris Opera, Pina Bausch's ballet Orfeo ed Euridice pays tribute to Christophe Willibald Gluck on the 300th anniversary of his birth.

Telmondis Distribution continues to develop its opera and ballet catalogue with productions from the world's greatest stages such as the Paris Opera, Saint Petersburg's Mariinsky Theatre, the Bolshoi, the Théâtre musical de Paris-Châtelet, the Opéra de Lyon, the Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie, La Fenice, the Opéra Royal de Wallonie and the Festival d’Aix en Provence.

Flagship productions new to the catalogue include Einstein on the Beach, Philip Glass and Robert Wilson's legendary opera filmed for the first time at the Théâtre Musical de Paris – Châtelet, the Tricentenary of the French Dance School celebrations from the Paris Opera, La Bayadère from the Bolshoi, Hamlet from the Théâtre de la Monnaie and lastly the Concert de Paris, the new operatic event held every year on Bastille Day beneath the Eiffel Tower in Paris.

> Special anniversaries RICHARD STRAUSS 150TH BIRTH ANNIVERSARY (1864-1949)

Opera in three acts by richard Strauss libretto by the poet hugo von hofmannsthal.

Inspired by Oriental fairy-tales and with an admiring glance at Mozart's Zauberflöte, the successful partnership of Strauss and Hofmannsthal created a puzzling, massive work heavy with symbolism and powerful sounds which constantly demands interpretation: is it wallowing in magical worlds whilst the old era is destroyed in the First World War? The pathway of trials taken by two couples on which the women overcome their own natures through subjecting themselves to the merciless law of renewal and decay? A study of the female psyche shortly after Freud's postulation of sexual neuroses? Or perhaps the spiritual voyage of a woman through her fears and guilt feelings at the end of which everyone comes together again on the threshold of the eternal father.

Die Frau ohne Schatten Bel Air Media 2013 Bayerische Staatsoper

Tragedy in one act by richard Strauss. libretto by the poet hugo von hofmannsthal.“Agamemnon!” The name of the late king of Mycenae, proffered by Elektra, resounds like a dizzying growl, a throbbing moan. Elektra is awaiting the return of her brother Orestes, who is the only person who can truly avenge his father. Richard Strauss transforms Elektra’s cry into a shock opera, with an explosive score, a single act of expectation crowned by irrepressible violence, a superb orchestral score, as refined as it is unrestrained, and women singing the distress of a dysfunctional family. Individual solitude and intimate violence are the very stuff of Patrice Chéreau’s work.

Thirty pieces by Jean-philippe rameau. Love reigns, everywhere and always. And the world of Baroque opera is certainly no exception, because whether they be gods or men, nobody can escape Cupid’s arrows. In 2012 Les Ambassadeurs performed the remarkable opening concert of the MAfestival. This time they use the most beautiful movements from Rameau’s operas to let us feel both the pleasure and the pain of love: innocent or lustful, happy or despairing. From hope, through disappointment and jealousy, to anger, with here and there a hint of madness… Rameau depicts all of these emotions via sophisticated orchestrations in the most vivid colours. Sabine Devieilhe,

who is nominated for the French ‘Victoires de la musique’ award this year, sings all the roles, giving voice to voluptuous mistresses, languishing queens and offended goddesses.

musical by Stephen Sondheim.

After A Little Night Music in 2010 and Sweeney Todd in 2011, the Théâtre du Châtelet presents another masterpiece from Stephen Sondheim. The pointillist painting by Georges Seurat, A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte, painted between 1884 and 1886, is the starting point of this passionate reflection on the artist's work.

an opera in four acts by philip Glass and robert Wilson.

At the time of its production in 1971, Deafman Glance, a wordless performance lasting seven hours, amazed French audiences and sparked the enthusiasm of Louis Aragon. A few years later, Robert Wilson joined forces this time with the composer, Philip Glass, to devise an opera that was performed at the Avignon Festival in 1976. It was to become the legend that is Einstein on the Beach.Certain themes linked to the physicist’s research, such as the theory of relativity and nuclear arms, were played out in a series of tableaux providing a highly revolutionary aesthetic: fairytale images of astonishing visual beauty were combined with very gradual changes in music and choreographed movements to form a total work of art that was to overturn the classic perception of time and space in the theatre. Restaged by its creators, with the collaboration of their long-standing choreographer, Lucinda Childs, this legendary piece is about to be rediscovered anew today.

Opera in four acts by modest mussorgsky. libretto by the composer after alexander pushkin.

Child murder, scheming monks and a tsar lapsing into madness – Modest Mussorgsky spread the thematic arc wide in his choral opera, which he began to work on from 1868, and with which he attempted to awaken an awareness of his own time through the indirect route of a historic story. As an artist of the 19th century, he was driven by the psychology of the masses. Thus, in Boris Godunov, alongside the hero of the title, the main role is actually taken primarily by the Russian people, rejoicing, starving, demanding and questioning.

“uncovering the fine features of human nature and the mass of humanity, stubbornly drilling in these unexplored regions and conquering them – this is the mission of the true artist. Onward to new shores!”

Opera in two acts by alexander borodin.

Based on the ancient Russian literature The Tale of Igor's CampaignPrince Igor is rightly considered to be one of the main Russian operas and is one of the Bolshoi Theatre’s ‘designer label’ titles.

Today Prince Igor comes back staged by Yuri Lyubimov, the maître of Russian theatre director. The legendary founder of the Taganka Theatre, worked for the world's greatests theatres (La Scala, The Royal Opera House, the Bavarian Staatsoper…). Prince Igor is a large-scale, multi-level fresco which combines ‘high-style’ epic narrative and folk comedy, it juxtaposes the chant of the Russian heroic poem and the boisterously ‘frenetic’ musical world of the East.

Borodin himself explains his aesthetic position as follows: “It seems to me that in opera, as in sets, there is no place for small forms, trivial detail: everything should be written in bold

strokes, clearly, vividly and, in so far as possible, convenient to perform by both voice and orchestra”.

Borodin spent many years writing Prince Igor, but he never managed to finish it. Following his sudden death, the opera was completed by Rimsky-Korsakov and Glazunov.

> Opera OPéRA NATIONAL DE PARIS

Opera in three acts by Giacomo puccini.libretto by Guelfo Civinini and Carlo zangarini based on David belasco’s play The Girl of the Golden West.

In the wake of the first literary westerns and as cinema began to exploit the genre, Puccini gave opera its first ever western: a tale of souls stranded at the edge of the world, a tale of laughter and of tears, both exotic and overwhelming.

First performed at the Metropolitan Opera of New York in 1910, this genuine masterpiece finally enters the repertoire of the Paris Opera. In a saloon bar known as The Polka, gold diggers brood over mothers left behind in Italy, whilst Minnie behind the bar reads to them from the Bible. Love, will come to Minnie in the guise of a criminal but seeing beyond mere appearances, she will recognise the true heart beneath the rough exterior and realise the possibility of happiness.

melodramma serio in three parts by vincenzo bellini.libretto by Carlo pepoli. At the beginning of 1835, Bellini's I Puritani, performed by four of the most celebrated singers of the time, La Grisi, Rubini, Tamburini and Lablache, enjoyed unprecedented success with its story of hopeless love and revenge set in 17th century England and conveyed by some of the most beautiful vocal writing ever. In Act II, Elvira appears, seized by madness and singing a melody of such heartrending purity that it might well have inspired Chopin in the writing of a nocturne. The vogue for I Puritani swept all before it, including Bellini himself, who died a few months later in a villa in Puteaux, in the throes of melancholia.

Opera in four acts by Giuseppe verdi.libretto by antonio Ghislanzoni after a scenario by auguste-édouard mariette.Aida is one of the most celebrated examples of the “Egyptomania” in the 19th century in Europe. This opera, intended as a celebration of universal concord and harmony between nations, is in fact entirely about conflict: the war between Egypt and Ethiopia is nothing compared to that which opposes the characters to each other. 12/13> Opera OPéRA NATIONAL DE PARIS

Fairy tale opera in three scenes by engelbert humperdinck.libretto by adelheid Wette after the Grimm brothers’ fairy tale.

Humperdinck became Richard Wagner’s assistant in Bayreuth. Wagner had two more years to live. These two years of intense artistic collaboration on Parsifal indelibly marked the young composer’s life and style. In 1883, the Master died, leaving his disciple “incomplete”. He became a wanderer, traveling throughout Europe, eventually becoming a renowned teacher. Ten years later, in Weimar, Humperdinck completed his masterpiece, Hansel and Gretel. His sister wrote the libretto, inspired by the Grimm brothers’ fairy tale. The opera premiered at Christmas under the enthusiastic baton of Richard Strauss. Humperdinck had retained a Wagnerian taste for continuous melody and leitmotiv. However, his fairy-tale opera (Marchenoper) also drew on children’s songs and the sort of popular melodies whose origins tend to become lost in the mists of time.

Cavalleria rusticana Opera in one act by pietro mascagni.Libretto by Giovanni Targioni-Tozzetti and Guido Menasci, adapted from a play written by Giovanni Verga.

pagliacciOpera in two acts by ruggero leoncavallo.Libretto by Ruggero Leoncavallo.

Cavalleria Rusticana is the first verismo opera (from the Italian verismo, vero: real). This operatic movement which arose at the end of the 19th century was based on the principle that the writer must be inspired by truth, with a realistic setting, and a short, often violent depiction of everyday day.

Cavalleria Rusticana and Pagliacci are operas in one and two acts, with simple musical resources. The music forgoes embellished vocals favouring tense voice lines instead. The action is set in Argentina, as a tribute to the Italian immigration of the 1900’s. Paolo Arrivabeni leads a cast in great form, dominated by a José Cura who again demonstrates his dual talent as a singer and director and the magnificent mezzo soprano Marie Kalinine, with her masterful strength and dramatic intelligence.

Opera in five acts by ambroise Thomas.libretto by michel Carré and Jules barbier based on William Shakespeare's play Hamlet.

The famous story of Hamlet and Ophelia is played out between the opposite poles of real and feigned madness, love and avenge. After the murder of his father, Hamlet opposes the marriage of his mother and his uncle, at the expense of his beloved and himself. When Ambroise Thomas chose Shakespeare’s Hamlet as the subject of his new opera, France had been under the spell of the English bard for many years, and Ophelia had inspired romantic artists. The librettists Carré and Barbier distilled a straightforward story from Shakespeare’s abundant characters and situations, which, although it was clearly far removed from the original, inspired Thomas to write a coherent score that demonstrated his mastery of musical atmosphere.

After their unanimously acclaimed Les Huguenots in 2011, Marc Minkowski and Olivier Py are continuing their highly personal exploration of the 19th century French Grand Opéra repertoire.

music by pyotr ilyich Tchaikovsky.Choreography and staging by rudolf nureyev after marius petipa (Opéra national de paris, 1989).

The “Ballet of ballets” as Rudolf Nureyev described it, Sleeping Beauty remains one of the jewels in the heritage of dance. First performed in 1890 at the Mariinsky Theatre in Saint-Petersburg, the work combined the talents of choreographer Marius Petipa and composer Tchaikovsky.

Inspired by Charles Perrault's tale, they imagined a “fairy-tale ballet” in which dream and reality overlap and where fairies and godmothers, and the forces of Good and Evil fight over the fate of two young people. It was not until 1989 that Rudolf Nureyev restaged the work based on the original choreography for the Paris Opera Ballet.

Readopting the original order and structure of the piece, passed on by generations of dancers, he devised a choreography of dazzling academic virtuosity, alternating

between lavish ensembles and pas de deux. The sumptuous sets and costumes by Ezio Frigerio and Franca Squarciapino recreate the splendor of one of the most outstandingly accomplished masterpieces in the classical repertoire.

music by Gustav mahler.Choreography, sets and lighting by John neumeier.

The entire edifice of John Neumeier’s work is built around a profound musical sensibility. However, the choreographer, in his constant questioning of the human condition, probably finds the closest reflection of his own humanist concerns in the works of Gustav Mahler, several of whose symphonies he has set to dance. On the wings of the emotions inspired by the monumental Third Symphony, written as “a great hymn to the glory of all creation”, he enters the composer’s tormented and contrasting universe to sculpt images of a powerful and profoundlyricism. The piece is an osmosis between music and dance, shot through with a palette of emotions, from existential angst to mystical faith. Chorus and soloists accompany the dancers’ elegant movements, curved lines and vertiginous lifts, reminding us yet again of the richness of inspiration that powers Neumeier’s choreography.

ballet in three acts by ludwig minkus.Choreography by marius petipa.Libretto by Marius Petipa and Sergei Khudekov. Marius Petipa’s decisive work La Bayadère was first performed at the Imperial Bolshoi Kamenny Theatre in St-Petersburg in 1877 in a grandiose production portraying a mysterious India and the impossible love between the sacred dancer Nikiya and the warrior Solor. A scene from the ballet, known as The Kingdom of the Shades, is one of the most celebrated excerpts in all of classical ballet, and is considered to be one of the first examples of abstract ballet. Living ballet legend, Yuri Grigorovich, created this version for the Bolshoi Theatre in 1991.

Nikiya, a temple dancer, has secretly sworn her eternal love to Solor, a noble warrior. When she rejects the attentions of the High Brahmin, he is furious and determines to have Solor killed…

Jean-Christophe Maillot presents us with his personal vision of Swan Lake. For this project which has been dear to his heart for ten years, the choreographer wanted to work with the writer Jean Rouaud, 1990 Prix Goncourt winner, to bring a new drama to this pillar of the classic repertoire. Together they have adapted the timeless story of Siegfried and Odette so that this narrative resonates with our own questioning. The visual artist Ernest Pignon-Ernest, a long-time associate of Jean-Christophe Maillot will design the scenery for this Lac and Philippe Guillotel will be responsible for creating the costumes. Tchaikovsky’s score will be performed by the Monte-Carlo Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Nicolas Brochot. Once more, Jean-Christophe Maillot presents a group of high-level artists. The combination of these

talented artists and performers together with Jean-Christophe Maillot’s skill and sensitivity promises an exciting reinterpretation of this major work and a great ballet at the end of the year.

Thierry Malandain, choreographer, is working hard on his latest challenge: the creation of the ballet Cinderella with an orchestra of 90 musicians who accompany him on this project. For this, the Ballet requires the cooperation of the Euskadi Symphony Orchestra. So, two neighboring countries, two cultures and artistic disciplines come together in a common project of dance and music. The documentary follows the preparation of this new challenge, since the beginning and until the final scene. The film ends with the Premiere at the Royal Opera of Versailles.

Wagner’s operas will be treated like characters in their own right. Indeed,Richard Wagner had always sought a deep source of musical inspiration through his confrontations with nature, never hesitating to face the most violent of storms nor take the maddest of risks. To enter into this more “romantic” dimension, Antoine Wagner will call on the Swiss orchestra conductor, Philippe Jordan, to reveal which musical passages are directly inspired by these places and ambiances.

Valery Gergiev is combining performances of Dmitri Shostakovich's first and last symphonies in one concert. The composer was only 19 when his Symphony n°1 was performed in Leningrad. Far from being academic, this work already has a true personality, especially in its treatment of rhythm. The Fifteenth Symphony which was first performed almost fifty years later, in Moscow, innovates through its borrowing from other works in the repertoire, especially the Opening of William Tell by Rossini.
