from his studio in Avening, creatingfaithful copies of those created bymaster violin-makers of the past,
such as Andrea Guarneri and ClaudePierray. They are praised for their‘projection, depth of sound and

A helping hand fromAvening to ArgentinaFROM HIS cottage in Mays Lane,Charles Sabine runs one of theworld's leading advocacy campaignsfor better recognition of and researchinto Huntington’s disease, agenetically-inherited degenerativeneurological condition. Charles, aformer war correspondent for USbroadcaster NBC News, discoveredhe was carrying the faulty gene in2005 after his father died from thedisease.Walking and talking in the lanes
around the village, Charles is keen topoint out, though, that his is not theonly home in Avening from which thehand of friendship has been
extended to people suffering fromHuntington’s. A chance conversationwith Archie Hardman in The Bellabout the difficulties faced byBrenda, a teenager in Buenos Aireswith Huntington’s whose mother hadabandoned her when she was veryyoung, began a friendship which haslasted years. Archie has raised fundsto buy Brenda computer equipmentand such every-day necessities as abed and a fridge. ‘It’s incredible tothink that so many people in Aveninghave done so much for someoneliving thousands of miles away,’ saysCharles.

Give yourselfbreaks little and often – workingfrom home means most of us arestaring at screens more than ever.Ensure breaks are long enough togive your brain (and back!) a rest.When you’re done, switch off yourcomputer – this will stop the urge tocontinue working or checking youremails. Don’t be hard on yourself –being able to go between work-brainto relax-brain within the sameenvironment is tough (there’s areason why we have offices), sotake it easy on yourself if you’relacking motivation or struggling tounwind.

Now Brenda’s story has been toldin a film, Dancing at the Vatican,chronicling the meeting between agroup of young people withHuntington’s disease and theirfamilies, and Pope Francis.Screenings of the film wereinterrupted by the pandemic but it isCharles’s hope that it will be shown inthe Memorial Hall as soon asLockdown ends - not least, saysCharles, because Archie has not yethad a chance to see the footage ofthe young woman whom he hashelped so much.

The Wombling Watsons: Alan and Louise Watson with daughter Rowan and son Lukespotted picking up litter near Powis Lane. ‘It is appalling and surprising how much isaround our beautiful lanes,’ says Louise, who picked up a picker from the garden centreand did something about it! The Cafe will be organising a Big Pick once Lockdownrestrictions are lifted.
Get On Yer Bike!(your electric bike?)AVENING’S pedal pushers are afamiliar sight around our highwaysand byways and we’ll be seeing moreof them once the weather improves.And for those who put the aged inMiddle-Aged Men in Lycra, electricbikes are proving a boon for gettingup the steep hills.‘I don’t get out much,’ says ChandyRodgers (who relies on pedal poweralone!), ‘but when I did there’s alovely ride up to Wild Carrot. There’sno easy route out of the village, butone is to head up Star Lane, turnright at top, cross over Tetbury Hill,along Chavenage Lane then take aleft at the T-junction - the Wild Carrotis on your right.’ The Wild Carrot willreopen later in the year - a lovelytreat to look forward to as theweather improves.For David Oliver, an electric bikemeans a more ambitious itinerary.‘Pre-lockdown, four of us were doingregular Saturday morning bike rides,’says David.
His route also features a number ofour favourite Cafes: Ride toCherington via Nags Head. Then onto Frampton Mansell (crossing theCirencester Road near JollyNice...Cafe no. 1). Take the backlanes to Chalford (with breakfast atthe Lavender Bakehouse when it’sopen...Cafe no. 2). Head down thecanal path into Stroud (it can be a bittricky for cyclists) and turn left at TheLock Keepers Café (completing theCafe hat-trick) and pick up the cyclepath behind Kwikfit. Follow this toNailsworth and either take theAvening Road home or cross thecattle grid at the bottom of the W,turn sharp right straight and climb thehill to Minchinhampton via Well Hill.Return to Avening by turning right atSteps Lane if it’s not too muddy. ‘It’squite a long ride and I certainlycouldn’t do it without my e-bike,’ saysDavid.Have you got a favourite bike route,ramble or ride? Elizabeth’s Gran’s brown sugarshortbread

‘I still have the aerogramme my Gran sent me with thisrecipe almost 50 years ago,’ says Elizabeth Buchanan.‘Every inch of the thin papers is filled with news from home- she had the tiniest handwriting! These were a real treatin our home. My Gran used a scone cutter, but when Imoved to Avening I started using a cutter in the shape ofa duck in honour of our annual Duck Races. Of coursethen they are called Ducky Biscuits.’Elizabeth’s Gran lived in Halifax in Nova Scotia, where herfamily settled in 1772 and made their home there forgenerations. ‘Even though I grew up in Denver, Colorado,I still think of it as ‘home’,’ says Elizabeth. ‘My cousin wasthe last to leave - 30 years ago.’
Ingredients225 g butter
115 g brown sugar300 g plain flour
MethodMix the butter with the sugar using a wooden spoon.Add half the flour, and mix with the spoon. Knead in the restof the flour with floured hands (‘which should be well-washed,’ writes Gran). Elizabeth says that she does this ina mixing bowl, whereas Gran used a pastry cloth.Gather dough into a bowl and chill if the day is hot to makeit more manageable.Roll dough out on a lightly-floured board to about 0.5inches thick. Cut into shapes using a fairly small cutter.Cook on a moderate heat (180 C) for about 20 minutes.Cool on a wire rack.
